  • The activated carbon fibers of different surface area and pore structures were modified by carbon deposition from the pyrolysis of benzene, in an attempt to obtain carbon molecular sieves of high adsorption capacity and selectivity for the separation of $CO_2/CH_4$ gas mixtures. The ACFs molecular sieves prepared from different temperature and time were tested by the static adsorption of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ gas, and their pore structures were characterized by the $N_2$ adsorption isotherms. We are able to prepare ACF molecular sieve with good selectivity for $CO_2/CH_4$ separation and showing acceptable adsorption capacities from the change of porosity by carbon deposition of pyrolyzed benzene.

  • Toluene desorption of modified activated carbon for microwave irradiation was evaluated. As a virgin GAC reacted from microwave energy, it created an "arcing" between GAC particles in desorption process. The arcing became more and more vigorous and achieved a red flame of GAC. The silica coated GAC(Si/GAC) was developed to prevent arcing phenomenon and temperature control problem. The result shows virgin GAC with 5wt%, 10wt% and 20wt% silica had no arcing and could control temperature very well. However, the adsorption rate of Si/GAC was decreased by coated silica amount due to decreasing surface area of GAC. The 5wt% Si/GAC adsorption rate was quite similar to virgin GAC adsorption rate. After adsorption, the toluene-loaded GAC and Si/GAC was reactivated by 2450MHz MW irradiation with 300W for 5 min. Quantitative desorption of the toluene was achieved at MW irradiation at 300W with desorption efficiencies as high as 98.59% to 84.65%% after four cycles.

  • Lyocell fibers were used as a precursor in order to improve yield and strength of cellulose-based precursor while manufacturing activated carbon fiber(ACF). Lyocell fibers as a precursor for the preparation of ACF were surface-modified by reaction with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) and pre-treated with KOH and H3PO4. Using aforementioned precursor, ACFs were prepared by a series of stabilization, carbonization and activation process at high temperatures. On each process, FT-IR, TGA, UTM and SEM were used to observe fibers' physical properties including structure and porous surfaces. FT-IR results proved that surface modification was achieved during stabilization, carbonization and activation process. TGA results during carbonization process found that surface modified fibers with APTES 0.02 mol(A2) showed higher thermostability, and extended pre-treatment increased yield. Especially, yield was found to have an increase of 10~20 wt% with surface modification during activation process. UTM results showed that tensile strength has the same order of concentration of APTES after surface modification, however, was found to show lower tensile strength than lyocell fibers after stabilization process. SEM results revealed that more homogeneous porosity control could be proceed after modifying the surface for the effective removal of hazardous substances.

  • For the elucidation of substrate specificity to the brown copra meal by Bacillus sp. ${\beta}-mannanase.$, the enzymatic hydrolysate after 24 hr of reaction was heated in a boiling water bath for 10 min, and then centrifuged to remove the insoluble materials from hydrolysates. The major hydrolysates composed of D.P 5 and 7 galactosyl mannooligosaccharides. For the separate of galactosyl mannooligosaccharides, the supernatant solution of 150 ml was put on a first activated carbon column. The column was then washed with 5 l of water to remove mannose and salts. The oligosaccharides in the column were eluted by a liner gradient of $0{\sim}30%$ ethanol, at the flow rate of 250 ml per hour. The sugar composition in each fraction tubes was examined by TLC and FACE analysis. The combined fraction from F3 was concentrated to 30 ml by vacuum evaporator. Then put on a second activated carbon column. The oligosaccharides in the column were eluted by a liner gradient of $0{\sim}30%$ ethanol (total volume: 5 l), at the flow rate of 250 ml per hour. The eluent was collected in 8 ml fraction tubes, and the total sugar concentration was measured by method of phenol-sulfuric acid. The major component of F2 separated by 2nd activated carbon column chromatography were identified $Gal^3Man_4(6^3-mono-{\alpha}-D-galactopyranosyl-{\beta}-mannotetraose)$. To investigate the effects of brown copra meal galactomannooligosaccharides on growth of Bifidobacterium longum, B. bifidum were cultivated individually on the modified-MRS medium containing carbon source such as $Gal^3Man_4$, compared to those of standard MRS medium.

  • A noncompartmented microbial fuel cell (NCMFC) composed of a Mn(IV)-carbon plate and a Fe(III)-carbon plate was used for electricity generation from organic wastewater without consumption of external energy. The Fe(III)-carbon plate, coated with a porous ceramic membrane and a semipermeable cellulose acetate film, was used as a cathode, which substituted for the catholyte and cathode. The Mn(IV)-carbon plate was used as an anode without a membrane or film coating. A solar cell connected to the NCMFC activated electricity generation and bacterial consumption of organic matter contained in the wastewater. More than 99% of the organic matter was biochemically oxidized during wastewater flow through the four NCMFC units. A predominant bacterium isolated from the anode surface in both the conventional and the solar cell-linked NCMFC was found to be more than 99% similar to a Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium and Burkeholderia sp., based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The isolate reacted electrochemically with the Mn(IV)-modified anode and produced electricity in the NCMFC. After 90 days of incubation, a bacterial species that was enriched on the Mn(IV)-modified anode surface in all of the NCMFC units was found to be very similar to the initially isolated predominant species by comparing 16S rDNA sequences.

  • In this study an optimization of the preparation conditions of activated carbon with a ternary metal ion material to treat $H_2S$, which is classified as a representative odor substance, was carried out. For a metal ion material for enhancing the adsorption performance of hydrogen sulfide, performance enhancement was confirmed by combining Li and Fe or a ternary combination (K, Li, Fe) based on KI, which is a substance promoting hydrogen sulfide adsorption performance. Also, it was determined by XRD analysis that the reaction of each active substance with $H_2S$ was because of binding. The adsorption performance increased more than 3 times with heat treatment of the adsorbent with nitrogen compared with heat treatment with air. The maximum adsorption constant ($q_m$) value of the optimum adsorbent was 97.07, which is 6 times higher than that of the existing K-based impregnated activated carbon. It was confirmed that the objective adsorption amount ($0.3g\;g^{-1}$) was secured by an equilibrium between the mass transfer rate and adsorption rate. From the results, it was confirmed that the performance improvement was noticeable even when activated carbon with a reagent grade activated carbon particle size was modified. It was confirmed that the adsorption performance exists at high relative humidity levels of 60 and 100%, and the optimized preparation can be applied to a wet process such as a scrubber downstream.

  • The importance of high capacity energy storage devices has recently emerged for stable power supply through renewable energy generation. From this point of view, the Na-air battery (NAB), which is a next-generation secondary battery, is receiving huge attention because it can realize a high capacity through abundant and inexpensive raw materials. In this study, activated carbon-based catalysts for hybrid type Na-air batteries were prepared and their characteristics were compared and analysed. In particular, from the viewpoint of resource recycling, activated carbon (Orange-C) was prepared using discarded orange peel, and performance was compared with Vulcan carbon, which is widely used. In addition, a Pt/C catalyst (homemade-Pt/C, HM-Pt/C) was synthesized using a modified polyol method to check whether the prepared activated carbon can be used as a supported catalyst, and a commercial Pt/C catalyst (Commercial Pt/C) and electrochemical performance were compared. The prepared Orange-C exhibited a typical H3 type BET isotherm, which is evidence that micropore and mesopore exist. In addition, in the case of HM-Pt/C, it was confirmed through TEM analysis that Pt particles were evenly distributed on the activated carbon supported catalyst. In particular, the HM-Pt/C-based NAB showed the smallest voltage gap (0.224V) and good voltage efficiency (92.34%) in the 1st galvanostatic charge-discharge test. In addition, the cycle performance test conducted for 20 cycles showed the most stable performance.
