  • Soil properties, drain conditions and numerical analysis technique have great influence upon consolidation behavior. In relevant to the above described fact, this paper aims to examining the applicability of prediction model of consolidation as well as deformation characteristics for soft clayey foundation improved by sand drain. A case study for actual foundation of Kwangyang steel works was performed. Single drain consolidation model proposed by Hansbo and Biot's consolidation theory coupled with modified Cam-clay model developed during the research were employed for the FEM numerical analysis of the foundation. Both smear effect and drain capacity were taken into account for the analysis. Finally the applicability of the newly developed technique to the behavior of foundation composed of soft clay proved satisfactory.

  • This paper investigates the time dependent behaviour of Haarajoki test embankment on soft structured clay deposit. Half of the embankment is constructed on an area improved with prefabricated vertical drains, while the other half is constructed on the natural deposit without any ground improvement. To analyse the PVD-improved subsoil, axisymmetric vertical drains were converted into equivalent plane strain conditions using three different approaches. The construction and consolidation of the embankment are analysed with the finite element method using a recently developed anisotropic model for time-dependent behaviour of soft clays. The constitutive model, namely ACM-S accounts for combined effects of plastic anisotropy, interparticle bonding and degradation of bonds and creep. For comparison, the problem is also analysed with isotropic Soft Soil Creep and Modified Cam Clay models. The results of the numerical analyses are compared with the field measurements. The results show that neglecting effects of anisotropy, destructuration and creep may lead to inaccurate predictions of soft clay response. Additionally, the numerical results show that the matching methods accurately predict the consolidation behaviour of the embankment on PVD improved soft clays and provide a useful tool for engineering practice.

  • This paper was carried out to investigate the existence of a unique stress- strain behavior by obtaining some factors influencing the time dependent stress- strain behavior of clay. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The relationship between stress ratro and strain in normally consolidated clay was in- dependent on pre-shear consolidation pressure. Therefore, shear strain could be expressed as a function with stress ratio. 2. The constitutive equation of shear strain on Modified Carn Clay Model coincided better with the observed value than Cam Clay Model. 3. The relationships between deviator stress and shear strain, between pore water pressure and shear strain were unified by the mean equivalent pressure. 4. The shear strain contour in norrnally consolidated clay was increased linearly through origin, but that in overconsolidated clay was not in accordance with the result of the former. 5. Because the effective stress path of normally consolidated clay was unified by the mean equivalent pressure, state boundary surface in (e,p,q) space was transformed into two dimensional surface. But it was considered to be suitable that the unified stress- strain in overconsolidated clay be expressed by a function with overconsolidation ratio. 6. The deviator for constant strain was increased linearly with increment of strain rate ($\varepsilon$) on semi-log scale, but pore water pressure was decreased. 7. The behavior of stress relaxation was transformed from linear to curvilinear with inc - rement of strain rate before stress relaxation test, and pore water pressure was increased in total range. 8. The strain of creep was increased linearly with increment of time on semi-log scale. The greater the strain rate before creep test became, the greater the increment of strain of creep became. And the pore water pressure during creep test was increased generally with increment of time on semi-log scale.

  • The soft clays are widely distributed, and one of the prominent engineering problems is the creep behavior. In order to predict the creep deformation of soft clays in an easier and more acceptable way, a simple creep constitutive model has been proposed in this paper. Firstly, the triaxial creep test data indicated that, the strain-time (𝜀-t) curve showing in the 𝜀-lgt space can be divided into two lines with different slopes, and the time referring to the demarcation point is named as tEOP. Thereafter, the strain increments occurred after the time tEOP are totally assumed to be the creep components, and the elastic and plastic strains had occurred before tEOP. A hyperbolic equation expressing the relationship between creep volumetric strain, stress and time is proposed, with several triaxial creep test data of soft clays verifying the applicability. Additionally, the creep flow law is suggested to be similar with the plastic flow law of the modified Cam-Clay model, and the proposed volumetric strain equation is used to deduced the scaling factor for creep strains. Therefore, a creep constitutive model is thereby established, and verified by successfully predicting the creep principal strains of triaxial specimens.

  • In this study, the MCC(modified Cam-Clay) model and the Hvorslev-MCC model, recently developed based on the critical state theory and with relatively few model parameters, were investigated by comparing the model predictions with the result of the conventional triaxial compression test strictly performed in laboratory. The discrepancy of the prediction capacities of the models exists on the heavily over-consolidated specimen. The Hvorslev-MCC model accurately predicts the peak strength envelope for heavily over-consolidated clayey specimens on the dry side of the critical state since it adopts the Hvorslev surface in the supercritical region other than the ellipse of the MCC model.

  • In this paper, a FEM analysis model was developed to solve the consolidation phenomena of embankment on the soft foundation. The developed FEM model was based on the Biot's consolidation equation which was coupled with one of three stress-strain constitutive relationships. In order to check the validity of the newly developed FEM model, the program input data were used by a test embankment which had been already constructed at Cubzac-les-ponts in France by Magnan et al. The FEM results compared to the experimental and analytical results which were obtained by the Magnan's group at Cubzac-les-ponts. The results compared showed that the consolidation phenomena were well explained by the author's FEM model which results were more accurate than the others. As for the pore water pressure, Christian-Boehmer's method used in this paper was considered preferable to Sandhu-Wilson's used by Magnan.

  • A theoretical study of the behavior of structured soils is presented herein. By introducing the effect of soil structure and loading history into the Cam Clay model, a new model was formulated. The concept of differing void ratios was modified to combine structural parameters and the over consolidation ratio, and an evolution law was proposed. Upon introducing the concept of the subloading yield surface, a new two-yield surface model was obtained. The predicted results were compared to the experimental data, demonstrating that the new model provided satisfactory qualitative modeling of many important features of structured soils.

  • The standard consolidation tests using the incremental loading technique test (IL) were performed on remolded normal consolidation and undisturbed clay samples to find out the effects of plastic index and loading period on consolidation in this study. The remolded samples used were prepared by mixing Gunsan-Samangum clay with bentonite so that they may have plasticity indexes of 15, 30, 45, and 60%, respectively. The undisturbed clay samples were collected from Inchon, Kwangyang, and Uoolsan. The samples were tested at the condition of 4 different loading periods (1, 2, 4, and 8 days). Settlement, coefficient of consolidation, compression index, secondary compression index, and pore water pressure characteristics were investigated from the plastic index and loading period aspects, and the compression index, coefficient of consolidation, and secondary compression index were formulated in terms of the plastic index and loading. To verify the applicability of proposed equations, the settlements obtained from Terzaghi's theory, modified Cam-Clay model (elasto-plastic model), and the Sekiguchi model (elasto-viscoplastic mode) were compared with the test results. The comparison indicates that the Sekiguchi model incorporating the secondary consolidation characteristic well predicts the results.

  • Each static and cyclic load test was performed in a laboratory model test. As a result, ground displacement decreased and bearing capacity of the soil increased owing to the sheer strength of geosynthetics in general. In addition, numerical analysis was operated using Mohr-Coulomb, Modified Cam-Clay models, and FLAC 4.0 2D and compared with the laboratory model test. The results were shown to be of a great difference because the existing equations had not considered the characteristics that sheer strength increases with a load increment. Therefore, this paper proposes an equation of cable elements considering an effect of load given through repeated tests.
