This study is a report on the restoration process and future projects involving the restoration of the medical records from 1914 to 1974. Cheong-Gang Young-Hoon Kim was born in 1882 and passed away in 1974. His times were the times when Korean Traditional Medicine was being neglected due to the introduction of Western Medicine through Japan. During this time Young-Hoon Kim put much effort into the Korean Traditional Medicine Restoration Movement and left over 150,000 medical records while consistently examining patients. Currently, this data can be found at the College of Oriental Medicine, Kyunghee University and is being compiled into a database as a part of the 2007 Knowledge of Oriental Medicine Web Service Project. The Preface and Chapter 1 introduce the author and the contents of the Cheong-Gang Medical Records, and Chapter 2 briefly discusses the necessity of providing digitalization and modernization to the medical records. Chapter 3 discusses the preservation process of the original medical records, chapter 4 describes the process of restoring and providing web access to the contents of the medical records, and chapter 5describes the main purpose of the medical records as well as future projects and an outlook involving the Knowledge of Oriental Medicine Web Service Project.
Objectives : Traditional Korean Emergency Medicine (EM) has been developing for thousands of years, however its value was not properly considered after 19th century modernization. The purpose of this study was to review the current status of EM in Korean Medicine and suggest methods for improvement. Methods : We performed systematic reviews of the definition, current medical system, and educational curriculum of EM in Western Medicine, traditional Korean and Chinese Medicine, and integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine with the use of medical classics and text books. We also analyzed the trends in published research articles to discuss the current situation in the field of traditional Korean EM, and to provide methods for its establishment and development with traditional Korean medicine. Results : The definition of EM as a treatment of acute disease shares common understanding among traditional Korean, Chinese, and Western medicine. We presented descriptions of EM in many medical classics, however current law and EM service does not include these. As for the review of publications during the last 20 years, we found 21 articles in several fields that confirmed the need for more investigation. Conclusion : Traditional Korean EM has a long history and clinical experiences that can be found in medical classics, textbooks and research articles. There is an urgent need for more studies on traditional Korean EM as an emergency medical service system, and in terms of educational curriculum and related policies to improve Evidence-Based teaching.
The market of conferences and expos of traditional/ complementary and alternative medicine has not been mature enough while interests in those medicines are growing fast. Meanwhile, some related events in Europe, North America, and Asia, held on regular basis, have reached to the international level in size, such as CAMExpo The Complementary, Natural & Healthcare Show in Europe, Integrative Healthcare Symposium in North America, Ayurveda Congress & Arogya Expo in India, International Conference and Exhibition of the Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products in Hong Kong. Those events have been held for 10 years or so, initiated their own features, and secured their own regular booth exhibitors and visitors. They open the homepage on the internet one or two years before their events are held and vigorously advertise their events on yearly basis. To succeed in, and bear fruits from, the 2013 World Traditional Medicine Expo in Sancheong, it is needed to analyze strong points of the events above and benchmark a practical timeline and technical road map to the 2013 Expo from them.
Traditional medicine in Asian countries show similarity according to geography, building up their own medical tradition upon indigenous cultural background. Mongolian medicine, in particular, displays district fusion of several medical systems accepted from neighboring countries adding to their traditional system. Those are Mongol Dhom medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion medicine, medicine of "Four Medical Tantras (四部醫典)", and combined system of Mongolian and biomedicine. Compared to East asian medicine, this is a different kind of diversity or hybridity resulting from idiosyncrasy of nomadic culture. Each current of Mongolian medical tradition has its own origin of historical backdrop. Mongol Dhom originated from ancient nomadic life, and medicine of "Four Medical Tantras (四部醫典)" was formed along with transmission of Tibetan Buddhism. Acupuncture and moxibustion is directly related to Chinese medical tradition, however, moxibustion is also referred to be regional origination. Lastly, biomedicine was transplanted during the modernization era, encouraging scientific approach toward Mongolian traditional medicine and producing combined medical practice. It is effective to derive each particular aspects of Mongolian medicine and analyze its specificity, in order to properly understand current Mongolian medical system. This paper aims at discovering socio-cultural meanings of each current and their nomadic feature beneath the diversity.
Yoon Gil-Young(1911-1987) was a frontier of the field of Traditional Korean Medical Physiology(TKMP) who was academically active since mid 1950s until early 1970s. He wrote several important papers and books. Among his writings, "A Study on the Methodology of Traditional Korean Medical Physiology", which was published serially in the "Korean Oriental Medical Journal" from June 1966 until March 1967, played an important role in establishing the contemporary TKMP and showed his academic stance on Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). This review will evaluate this paper's contribution to the establishment of TKMP in historical context, summarize the unique characteristics of his understanding of TKMP by analyzing the text, and then based on those information, examine his view on TKMP and TKM. Historically, this paper was written in transition period from the traditional TKM knowledge system to the modernized one. Aim of this paper was to provide a methodology for establishing TKMP as a scientific knowledge system like that of the western medicine. Based on his study of Yin-Yang theory and theory of five circuits and six qi in Huangdi's Internal Classics, he suggested those theories as methods to observing life phenomena and systematizing the observations. And he regarded these methods as of great value in determining the unique characteristics of TKM compared to those of western medicine. Through re-reading this paper, it was found that he had pride and confidence in the methodology of TKM, and also that he thought in scientizing and modernizing TKM it was very important to understand and efficiently put in use the methodology of TKM. It was also found that his view on TKMP and TKM was pro modernization.
Since 1990's, the Korean society, experiencing the low fertility and aging society, has been confronting with the threats in health care sector. The threats are the increases in the demand for health care, health care financial burden, and so on. In particular, the change of disease pattern and aging population result in the increases patients' demand for not only western medical services but also oriental medical services and complimentary medicine. Recently, the increases in availability of oriental medical services and the health care resources related to oriental medicine are raising some issues and conflicts in the Korean health sector. Theses circumstance required policy makers, central and local government, and public health sector to develop health policies related to oriental medicine and interface or integrate of traditional Korean medicine and Western medicine. For the near future, these issues will probably remain the focus of integration of traditional Korean medicine and Western medicine in public health sector. To cope with the threats in health care sector, one of the opportunities is to scale-up e public role of traditional Korean medical services. The main purpose of this study was to develop strategies to scale-up the Public role of traditional Korean medical services for the future society. The research questions are: what are the trends and problems in traditional Koran medical sector; what are the causes of or associated factors to the problems; how to cope with the problems and how to resolve the cause?; what are the health policy directions and its strategies that the government should take to cope with the future demand and the burden on health care sector? The results of this study are as follows. In order ta scale-up the public role of traditional medicine, this research offered health policy directions for traditional Korean medicine in response to a change environment of health care sector. There are four directions to be addressed: 1) the development of and investment in public oriental medicine infra-structure; 2) the development of public policy on oriental medicine; 3) modernization and globalisation of traditional Korean medicine; 4) the expansion of academic exchange between Western medicine and traditional Korean medicine. Finally, we discussed stakenholders' on traditional Korean medicine in the health care market. Then, public policy options for future society was suggested.
This study focuses on seeking a desirable direction for the discussions about identity issue of the current Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). The identity issue of the current TKM is about asking what exactly the current TKM is, what sets the TKM apart from the other medical systems, and what value the TKM has in the contemporary settings, and seeking suitable answers to all these questions. The most important factor that affects these answers is what kind of the concept of identity we have. Current discussions of the identity issue of the TKM take narrow and inflexible concepts of identity such as "Numerical Identity," or "Qualitative Identity", not suitable for TKM, which is always changing and open to other academic fields. This study suggests that Hannah Arendt's concept of identity is more desirable for the TKM, which highlights pluralism and relations, as well as defining identity as a creative, positive, and open-ended process. In addition, this study also suggests that taking a closer look at the "field", which has previously been hidden behind the discourse on the "modernization", will help in figuring out what exactly the identity of the current TKM is. Lastly, the current discussions about "unification of Eastern and Western medical system", and "Integrative Medicine" in Korea will affect the identity issue of TKM.
The present paper attempts to investigate the factors which may affect the attitude toward Oriental Medicine among the university students in Korea and China. The research on determining factors that may influence the attitude toward the Oriental Medicine can provide the answers for the question how the traditional things can acquire their present position and make a development in modern society. The East Asian countries such as Korea and China have promoted the western-style changes and development, thinking that modernization means the westernization. Given this, the research on the attitude toward Oriental Medicine can be a good case study that shows how tradition sustains its place and develops. The present study makes two hypotheses in order to analyze the factors which make the influence on the attitude toward the Oriental Medicine: Hypothesis there will be no significant difference between the socio-demographic variables and attitude toward Oriental Medicine. Hypothesis there will be significant differences between traditionalism, modernity, nationalism, and attitude toward Oriental Medicine. The statistical results show that hypothesis 1 was confirmed in the case of the gender of the participants, whereas it was not confirmed in the case of the birthplace, economic status, and nationality. And hypothesis 2 was not confirmed in the relations between nationalism and modernity and the attitude toward Oriental Medicine, whereas it was confirmed in the relations between traditionalism and the traditional medical concept and attitude toward Oriental Medicine.
Objectives : The term ByunJeung is usually used to represent the characteristic of Korean Medicine. However the meaning of ByunJeung has not been consistent. After the 1980s when Traditional Chinese Medicine was introduced into Korea, the meaning of ByunJeung in Korea became diverse. In this paper, we aimed to research how the meaning of ByunJeung has been varied. Methods : We used four major journal database in Korea to search articles related to ByunJeung. Using the terms such as "변증" and "辨證", which mean ByungJeung in Korean and Chinese, we collected 500 articles in total. Among them, we chose only 61 articles selectively which mainly focused on the meaning of ByunJeung. We categorized those according to the specific meaning of ByunJeung which each article used, and qualitatively analyzed those articles. Results : Articles related to ByunJeung were categorized into three different groups. The first group was for the articles which dealt with changing meanings of ByunJeung. The second group was for the articles which focused on the modernized meaning of ByunJeung. The third group was for the articles which was on the traditional meaning of ByunJeung. Conclusions : The term ByunJeung holds a key concept in the current field of Korean medicine. Nevertheless, since the meaning of ByunJeung has been diverse, it often caused confusion among the people who used the term ByunJeung. Therefore we need to clarify the exact meaning when we intend to use the term. Also there should be a further discussion on the meaning of ByunJeung in the field of Korean medicine to facilitate better understanding on the characteristic of Korean medicine.
