A Study on the Differences of the Timber Framework and Dimensions Among the Building Age of Folk Houses in Yeosu City (여수지역 재래민가(在來民家) 가구(架構)의 구성과 치수의 건립시기별 차이에 관한 연구)

  • The study of the modern age period folk house is still insufficient in the Korean folk house study. The study subject had a tendency towards mainly on the plan in the field of the traditional folk house which had been studied relatively lively. We were going to grasp the formation and the actual situation of the folk house in this paper targeting at Yeosu city where the folk houses were left relatively a lot. Specifically, we examined it how the composition and dimensions of timber framework changed according to period. The division of period from before 1910 to the 1960s classified it at 4 periods on the basis of the sociocultural change. However, as a result of investigation analysis, the change of the composition and dimensions of timber framework was classified at 3 periods not 4 periods. The division of 3 periods is "traditional era", "modern age 1", and "modern age 2" not "traditional era", "modern age", and "contemporary age". The folk house group came as a common name for folk house without doing the division of period until now. There is a meaning in that this paper subdivided the period of the folk house group by the change of the timber framework technology. The timber framework is the effective index to investigate the actual condition because the change is difficult after building. Therefore, we examined it including the dimensions as well as the composition of timber framework in this paper comprehensively and systematically.

Comparison of the Characteristics of Chanel Style between Modern and Postmodern Period (모던 시대와 포스트모던 시대의 샤넬 스타일 특성 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristic of Chanel style between modern and postmodern period. The documentary research method was used for this study. The modem period was limited from around 1920 through 1939 and the postmodern period from 1990 through present for this research. The results were summarized as follows: The characteristics of clothing style in modem period were 1) the preference of slim & straight body figure as ideal one and slim & straight clothing silhouette, 2) the high fashion image for the elite by simple & basic design, 3) the emphasis on the harmony by the unity, 4) the tendency of eliminating ornaments on clothing, 5) the discontinuation of traditional way of dress code & style, and 6) the modern style. The characteristics of clothing style in postmodern period were 1) the emphasis on erotic aspects of female body and sexy design, 2) the popularization of high fashion and certain social group's fashion, 3) the tendency of harmony by mix-match, 4) the preference of ornaments in clothing, 5) the preference of retro-fashion, and 6) the continuation of modem style.

  • This study intended to examine the changes of residential building characteristics in period classification. The results of this study are as follows: During Joseon dynasty, it is judged that the social changes in the ideology of ruling classes did not directly affect the traditional residential style. The mid period and latter period of Joseon, it is changed toward horizontal and practical residential layout in place of confucian courtesy based style. During port opening period, the traditional residential style was remodeled through addition of glass panes to inter-chamber floor in tune with the influx of modern materials and ideologies like glass or cement etc. The Japanese ruling era of Korea period, the modern housing style of room separation type was settled.

  • This study attempts to analyze the characteristics and changing trends of the interior design of modern Korean houses since 1960s and to understand the impacts of Western architecture and design. the photos of 101 houses were selected from the magazines published since 1960s. The data collected were analyzed via frequency percentage and average. The result reveals that the interior design of the living rooms in modern Korean houses has undergone lots of changes in finishing materials window treatments types of cabinets and use of lighting fixtures. It is concluded that 1960-1960s is a period of introducing Western design as a superior while 1980's is a period of exploring various ways toward harmony between Korean style and Western styles and 1990's is a period of settlement of koreanized modernism style.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between the \"spirit of the times\" and the characteristics of each eras clothing in Renaissance and Post-modern Period. Theoretical studies about the \"spirit of times\" and the characteristics of clothing about each time were preceded. The results were as follows: Similarities of \"Spirit of times\" were 1) emphasis on humanity 2) anti-centralization 3) destruction of social status 4) deconstruction of christianity in Renaissance and modernism in Post-modern Period.   • The purpose of this study was to investigate type of the modern architecture in Daegu province, based on 91 buildings which were built from 1886 to 1945 in Daegu province. The results of this study could be summarized as follows : The modern buildings were built by the western missionary, Japanese, Chineses and Korean. The catholic, built Korean style cathedral and parsonage early in the missionary period, then changed to build Gothic revival and georgian style masonary buildings. The protestant built eclectic buildings. With masonary structure and Korean roof style. Then from 1930's, they started to build Gothic revival style buildings. Japanese built eclectic buildings which mixed with Western and Japan type during the first period. Then, they also started to build Western eclectic building. Chinese built only two buildings during the whole periods and those were Western eclectic style buildings. Korean started to build commercial and school buildings which were Western style from the middle of the second period by nationalist and local commercialist.

  • This paper is one of Korean towns in the period of Korean-Modern, which play an important role in shaping the present cities of Korea. In the concrete, this study deals with the urban form of the Japanese Concession at Womsan where is the second Open Port in Korea. By the way, both of the Open Port and the Concession were the town that not exist before the period of Korean-Modern, and the town that symbolize the historical characters of the period of Korean-Modern. On this study, it is intended to analyze the situations of establishment, the process of the urban form, and the meanings of Concession, from 1880 to 1910, the period when had been kept up the nature of the Concession mainly. The Japanese Concession at Wonsan was urged it's establishment by Japan Government that is conscious of the purpose of foreign trade and military importance. But, it was slow in progress of developing town because of the distance from the capital 'Han Yang', today we called it Seoul, and lack of the background towns. However, after both the wars of 1895 and 1904, Japanese residents were incresed and urban aspects were advanced. The urban form of Japanese Concession was devided two territories by the natural circumstances, so that was made a difference on the period of the development. And finally, it had double axis on the form of district. Furthermore, by increasing of residence, it was occured that new Japanese resident arwa was occupied and expanded illegally between the road which is toward the existing Korean village 'Womsan-Jin(元山津)'. This indeed is the illegal extension of the Japanese Concession at Wonsan. Conclusively, Concession fumed out the primary factor that Korean towns are altered with the heterogeneous ones in the period of Korean-Modern.

A Study of Temporality of a Critical Discourse on the Modern in the Late Japanese Colonial Period (일제말기 근대비판 담론의 시간성 연구: 세계사·전통·비상시)

  • In the late Japanese colonial period, from the Sino-Japanese War until the Pacific War, critical discourses on the modern were prevalent in Japan and the Joseon. Despite the absence of a consensus about the specific definition of the modern, most thinkers agreed that the modern was something to be overcome. While some regarded naturalism and capitalism of the West as the essence of the modern, some others named scientism and humanism as the nature of the western modernity. Additionally, some criticized the temporal concept of historicism and brought new meanings of 'tradition' into relief, and some others advocated overcoming 'the West inherent in us'. This study is to consider the temporality of the theory of overcoming the modern focusing on the following three notions-world history, tradition, and emergency-, and examines the antinomy of them. The first notion to consider is 'world history'. The theorists of overcoming the modern, including the Kyoto school, discarded the progressive ideology that had led the Western modern history, and instead introduced 'world history' as a new notion. Although this resulted from the imperialistic embracement of the theories of Ranke, a major positivist historian from Germany, it contained antinomy of remaining in 'history' which was the modern temporal view. The second notion is 'tradition'. While the critical mind of 'world history' brought 'time of world' into question in the context of temporal realization, the notion of 'tradition' was to understand 'time of history' itself as the modern and overcome it. The critical mind of the notion involves the attempts to criticize regarding history as a 'progressive' process and to discover tradition as 'the present past' or 'the eternal present'. However, it also contained antinomy; the 'tradition' here was a notion that was created in the modern times, not passed down from ancient times. The third notion to consider is 'emergency', which was a method to define the present time as a transition period toward a new era, relating to states of war. However, the theorists of overcoming the modern did not regard 'emergency' as a particular time that strayed from normal states, instead they thought is as 'a regularized exceptional state', namely 'a state in which exceptions have become regulations'. However, the notion also contained antinomy since the word 'emergency' connotes abnormality.

  • Traditional villages formed their own indigenous residential cultures which were influenced by the nature and the socio-cultural environment. Since the influential factors have changed in modern period, the forms of housing have gradually changed and were also replaced by new types. This study aims to view the changes of the traditional housing in modern period through case studying the traditional village. The result can be used as a preliminary data for another research. The object of this research is Do-Jin village, Buckhoo-myun, in An-Dong which has a regional particularity and diversity of housing forms.

  • 20th century, beginning of modern, the style of art and design, separated reasonable and sensitive code. Art form including cubism, constructivism, futurism and different form including fauvism, expressionism, surrealism and abstract expressionism coexist two code in early modern. But the style of design was separated each period with geometric and organic form, reasonable and sensitive code. Replacement timing on two design style was the transition period of the production-oriented step to the sale-oriented step in marketing. In early stage modern it was stable production-oriented step. Geometric style include G. Rietvevld (Red and Blue chair), M. Breuer (Wassily chair), Fanizon and Martinelli (I-Ching) was simple and functional, received the absolute support. An aggressive demand generation and sales promotion for the design change was needed so that excess supply in the market with a stable production. In sale-oriented step for sales promotion in mid modernism, it was accepted transitions to the sensual organic volume with elegant and sleek style include C. Eames (LCW chair), V. Panton (Panton chair) and C. Mollino (Arabesco Tea table).
