A new type of soft ground breakwater was recently developed, which does not need ground improvement because of light weight and structural characteristics. The various studies about consolidation settlements and lateral behavior of proposed soft ground breakwater have been conducted. But, the systematic investigations on the construction performance and long-term settlements of new type breakwater has not been accomplished. In this study, construction simulation of soft ground breakwater with soil box model test and experiments of the long-term wave loaded breakwater were performed. The results of test shows that it is possible to compensate differential settlements by dead loading and/or suction pressure, and to reduce the consolidation settlements by preloading method. It was also found that the vertical and lateral displacements of long-term wave loaded breakwater were negligible.

The dynamic responses of a pier-pile-soil system subjected to a barge/flotilla collision are analyzed. A coupled high-speed train and bridge system with a damaged pier after barge/flotilla collision is established by taking the additional unevenness of the track induced by the damaged pier as the self-excitation of the system. The whole process of a CRH2 high-speed train running on the 6×32 m simply-supported PC (prestressed concrete) box-girder bridge with a damaged pier is simulated as a case study. The results show that the lateral displacements and accelerations of the bridge with a damaged pier are much greater than the ones before the collision. The running safety indices of the train increase with the train speed as well as with the number of barges in the flotilla. In flotilla collision, the lateral wheel/rail forces of the train exceed the allowable values at a certain speed, which influences the running safety of the trains.
The evaluation of soundness of pile is very important for the safety of super structure. In this paper, the HWAW(Harmonic Wavelet Analysis of Wave) method which is developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves is applied to evaluate integrity of pile non-destructivly. The proposed method can evaluate a soundness of pile and pile end condition which is very important factor for pile behaviour. To verity the applicability of HWAW method in non-destructive test for pile, the numerical simulation test using ABAQUS was performed. And the model pile was made and the proposed non-destructive pile tests were applied to evaluate soundness and end boundary condition of model pile in the air and soil box. Through a numerical simulation and model tests, it is shown that the HWAW method has good potential of applying to the evaluation of pile integrity.

Pollution by chemical substances such as POPs, EDCs and PBTs in the ecosystem has become more complex and varied, increasing the possibility of irreversible damage to human health or the ecosystem. It is necessary to have a exposure assessment in a multi-media environment for various chemical substances is required for efficient management. This study applied MUSEM(Multi-media Simplebox-systems Environmental Model), a multimedia environmental model that can simultaneously evaluate the possibility of exposure of hundreds of chemical substances in order to efficiently manage chemical substances that can have negative impact on human health or ecological environment through environmental contamination. MUSEM executed the modeling for Japan by setting all 47 prefectures of japan as the regional area for 62 chemical substances and the rest of the territory of japan, excluding regional area, as the continental area and made the estimation of concentration among environment media in each administrative area and made the sensitivity analysis on Tokyo area. The results of simulation for chemical distribution showed that most of the target chemicals located in water region. The result of sensitivity analysis for octanol-water partition rate showed that the concentration change of soil in urban/industrial area and sediment in freshwater was high. In the case of sensitivity analysis for degradation rate showed that the concentration change of freshwater, soil in urban/industrial area, and sediment in freshwater was high.

Tunnels are widely used for special purposes including roads, railways and culvert for power transmission, etc. Its cross-section shape is determined by uses, ground condition, environmental or economic factor. Many papers with respect to behaviours of adjacent ground and existing structure tunnelling-induced have been published by many researchers, but tunnel cross-section have rarely been considered. A collapse of tunnel causes vaster human and property damage than structures on the ground. Thus, it is very important to understand and analyse the relationship between behavoiurs of ground and cross-section type of tunnel. In this study, the behaviour of ground due to tunnel excavation for underground station below the grouped pile supported existing structure was analysed through laboratory model test using a trap-door device. Not only two cross-section types, 2-arch and box, as station for tunnel, but also, offset between tunnel and grouped pile centre (0.1B, 0.25B, 0.4B) are considered as variable of this study. In order to measure underground deformation tunnelling-induced, Close Range Photogrammetry technique was applied with laboratory model test, and results are compared to numerical analysis.

As the size of structures become larger by civil and architectural structures becoming large, deeply underground, and high-rise, the conditions of underground foundation vary according to the location that the lack of bearing capacity locally because of ununiform of foundation in some parts is frequent. Generally, when the foundation is not homogeneous, the acquisition of safety through applying the most conservative foundation method possible becomes the focus to secure the stability of the superstructures. It is considered as because of inability to verify the application and stability and application of construction of different foundations through an outlined review because of lack of study in case of different foundation of mixed use of direct foundation and pile foundation. Therefore, through measurement interpretation of the different foundation in which the direct foundation and pile foundation are mixed in use, the grounds in which the hypothetical bearing capacity changes dramatically was modeled to evaluate the applicability of different foundations. Also, based on the results of measurement interpretation, various foundations are created by using plaster, Joomunjin standard soil, and rubble to conduct an indoor model test to compare and analyze the movement of pile foundation and different foundations. Based on such research results, the stability and applicability of the different foundations which is more efficient and economical than the existing foundations in case of grounds in which the bearing capacity changes dramatically by comparing and analyzing the different foundations (direct foundation + pile foundation) with the conservative pile foundation and mat foundation. As a result, when the different foundation is applied, the overall settlement amount increased than the conservative pile foundation. However, the difference was very minute and it has been confirmed to be no issue as a result of assessment of stability of the differential settlement of structures through critical angle displacement.
In this study, the bearing capacity behavior of strip footing located above a continuous cavity in sand was investigated experimentally. The model footing test was performed in a model box made by using raining method in sand. The model footing test results were compared with those obtained from theoretically proposed equations. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a critical region under the footing. For strip footing, there exists a critical depth below which the presence of the cavity has negligible influence on the footing performance. Only when the cavity is located within this region will the footing performance be significantly affected by the presence of the cavity. The size of the critical region depends on several factors such as footing shape, soil property, cavity size and cavity shape. When the cavity is located within the critical region, the bearing capacity of the footing varies with various factors, such as the size and location of the cavity and the depth of foundation. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions were induced. 1. The ultimate bearing capacity due to the eccentricity of a underground cavity increases at the rate of the small rather than that due to the depth of a underground cavity. This indicates that the bearing capacity of a strip footing is influenced on the depth rather than the eccentricity of a underground cavity. 2. The critical $depth(D/B)_{cr}$, by underground cavity in sand soil ground that is made by the relative density($D_r$)=55%, 65%, 75%, approaches a range of about 8~10 in case of W/B=1, and about 11~13 in case of W/B=2. 3. In case of the relative density($D_r$) 75%, the most outstanding differential settlement trend is shown in the depth of 4~8cm regardless of the size of cavity, namely, when the value of D/B is 1~2. Therefore, a underground cavity influences on not only the decrease of the bearing capacity but also the differential settlement of a strip footing.

This paper presents a new method of soil improvement by using semi-flexible vertical reinforcing elements which shows promise for future work. Load tests were conducted on two model footings in a sand box using unreinforced sand and also by reinforcing the sand with vertical reinforcing elements. The ultimate bearing capacity for the unreinforced and reinforced sand has been compared. The effect of length, spacing, lateral extent of the reinforcement, and the initial relative density of sand in increasing the ultimate bearing capacity have been evaluated. The effect of roughness of the reinforcing elements has also been investigated. Based on the results of these model footing tests, it appears that significant improvement in the ultimate bearing capacity of loose and medium sands can be achieved by reinforcing with vertical elements.

This paper presents a study on the mechanical behavior of buried pipelines crossing faults using experimental and numerical methods. A self-made soil-box was used to simulate normal fault, strike-slip fault and oblique slip fault. The effects of some important parameters, including the displacement and type of fault, the buried depth and the diameter of pipe, on the deformation modes and axial strain distribution of the buried pipelines crossing faults was studied in the experiment. Furthermore, a finite element analysis (FEA) model of spring boundary was developed to investigate the performance of the buried pipelines crossing faults, and FEA results were compared with experimental results. It is found that the axial strain distribution of those buried pipelines crossing the normal fault and the oblique fault is asymmetrical along the fault plane and that of buried pipelines crossing the strike-slip fault is approximately symmetrical. Additionally, the axial peak strain appears near both sides of the fault and increases with increasing fault displacement. Moreover, the axial strain of the pipeline decreases with decreasing buried depth or increasing ratios of pipe diameter to pipe wall thickness. Compared with the normal fault and the strike-slip fault, the oblique fault is the most harmful to pipelines. Based on the accuracy of the model, the regression equations of the axial distance from the peak axial strain position of the pipeline to the fault under the effects of buried depth, pipe diameter, wall thickness and fault displacement were given.
The Linear Regression Model to extend the monthly runoff data in the short-recorded river was proposed by the author in 1979. Here in this study generalization precedure is made to apply that model to any given river basin and to any given station. Lengthier monthly runoff data generated by this generalized model would be useful for water resources assessment and waterworks planning. The results are as follows. 1. This Linear Regression Model which is a transformed water-balance equation attempts to represent the physical properties of the parameters and the time and space varient system in catchment response lumpedly, qualitatively and deductively through the regression coefficients as component grey box, whereas deterministic model deals the foregoings distributedly, quantitatively and inductively through all the integrated processes in the catchment response. This Linear Regression Model would be termed "Statistically deterministic model". 2. Linear regression equations are obtained at four hydrostation in Geum-river basin. Significance test of equations is carried out according to the statistical criterion and shows "Highly" It is recognized th at the regression coefficients of each parameter vary regularly with catchment area increase. Those are: The larger the catchment area, the bigger the loss of precipitation due to interception and detention storage in crease. The larger the catchment area, the bigger the release of baseflow due to catchment slope decrease and storage capacity increase. The larger the catchment area, the bigger the loss of evapotranspiration due to more naked coverage and soil properties. These facts coincide well with hydrological commonsenses. 3. Generalized diagram of regression coefficients is made to follow those commonsenses. By this diagram, Linear Regression Model would be set up for a given river basin and for a given station (Fig.10).
