  • In this research, stainless steel and heat-shrinkage tube were used for new TDR sensing line to solve the problems of ordinary TDR system. The new TDR line improved the sensitivity of water content and endurance, and reduced the data noise. The saturation degree test and acryl model test were done by revised TDR sensor. From the results, without additional data filtering and quantitative analysis, the raw data were separated into 3 zones; saturated, unsaturated and dried zones easily. In addition, the revised TDR sensor was installed in large-scale embankment model to perform the seepage test. The raw data of the model tests showed the distributed seepage behaviors and separated zones clearly, which were almost the same tendencies as the lab test results.

  • The objective of this study is to perform finite element analyses using the anisotropic hardening constitutive model on the basis of the total stress concept. An anisotropic hardening constitutive model had been developed in a companion paper, and was then formulated by implicit stress integration and consistent tangent moduli. A nonlinear finite element analysis program was coded including the algorithm, and as a result, the nonlinear solution was accurately calculated and converged to be asymptotically quadratic. In the analysis of a test embankment it was found that the proposed model could predict the displacement of soils more reasonably than the analysis with von Mises type model. In addition the proposed model could predict accurately the actual behavior through the reanalysis of the problem by a reasonable evaluation of the strength parameter.

  • The estimation of soil stabilization is of great importance concerning the construction of structures on weak soil. A typical model of soil stabilization is considered as replacement, which is based on ground at failure due to direct loading on weak soil. The calculation of the line of predicting settlement was carried out using RPL and DIKE programs. The DIKE program is showing a tendency to excel totally about this embankment of the seadike. Hereafter, This program will be contributed widely to the construction of offshore structures on weak soil.

  • When a sea-dike is constructed on soft soils, it is much difficult to calculate ground deformation caused by forced displacements. In this study , a series of laboratory model tests have been performed to investigate the ground deformation under a constructed sea-dike on soft soils. Construction sequence of sea-dike embankment was assumed such as constructed by quarry first and followed by soils adjacent to quarry embankment. as test data and displacement in subsoils have been analyzed, it seems that deformation is caused by general shear failure. the shape of ground deformation caused by forced displacements was well defined be parabola . Upon comparing profiles and depth of forced displacement from the model test to those based on stress-baring capacity method commonly used, it has been found that deformation prediction using stress-bearing capacity method was not exact at the edge of loading.

  • To investigate the behaviour of the embankment on very soft foundation reinforced geotex- files, the laboratory model test in order to analyze the elementary effects of geotextile reinfor- cement and the finite element program analyzing the stresses and deformations characteristics was carried out. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element program called GEOTEXT(a modification of ISBILD) for the static analysis of embankment on very soft foundation reinforced geotextiles has been developed. Both linear and nonlinear hyperbolic stress-strain soil models are inclu- ded, and incremental and stage construction can be simulated. However, the program GEO- TEXT is not developed herein as an adaptable design tool for practicing engineer. It was found that the geotextile reinforcement significantly reduced the shear stresses in the foundation and decreased the vertical differential settlements at the top of the embank- ment. This influence was more pronounced as the tensile strength of the geotextile was increased.

  • Peatland is distributed in China widely, and organic matters in soil frequently induce problems in the construction and maintenance of highway engineering due to the high permeability and compressibility. In this paper, a selected site of Dali-Lijiang expressway was surveyed in China. A numerical model was built to predict the settlement of the foundation of the selected section employing the soft soil creep (SSC) model in PLAXIS 8.2. The model was subsequently verified by the result of field observance. Consequently, the parameters of 17 types of soils from different regions in China with organic contents varying from 1.1-74.9% were assigned to the numerical model to study the settlement characteristics. The calculated results showed that the duration of primary consolidation and proportion of primary settlement in the total settlement decreased with increasing organic content. Two empirical equations, for total consolidation settlement and secondary settlement, were proposed using multiple linear regression based on the calculated results from the numerical models. The analysis results of the significances of certain soil parameters demonstrated that the natural compression index, secondary compression index, cohesion and friction angle have significant linear relevance with both the total settlement and secondary settlement, while the initial coefficient of permeability exerts significant influence on the secondary settlement only.

  • In this paper, a series of centrifuge tests were performed to evaluate the seepage characteristic of reinforced embankment. The centrifuge models simulated an actual embankment reinforced by enlargement of levee cross-section. The centrifuge models have the same conditions except the locations of enlargement with low permeable material : water-side and land-side. In addition, the prototype embankment is constructed on low permeable clay layer. In the case of water-side reinforcement, the reinforced zone makes water head down and the saturated zone of embankment propagates slowly. In the case of land-side reinforcement embankment, the saturated zone enlarged relatively faster but the amount of exit water at land-side toe was very small because of the land-side reinforcement zone. The low permeable clay foundation layer was being continuously saturated by the inflow from the embankment as well as the uplift flow from the permeable layer induced by the excess pore water pressure.

  • Increases in excess pore water pressure without change of surcharge load were reported in clay underneath embankment at Berthierville and Olga sites after the end of construction. These abnormal phenomena could not be explained by classical consolidation theory. This paper presents a nonlinear viscoplastic model to interpret an increase in pore water pressure on natural clay, The proposed model can consider the combined processes of pore water pressure dissipation according to Darcy's law and pore water pressure generation due to viscoplastic strain, as well as time-dependent viscoplastic behaviour and strain rate dependency of preconsolidation pressure. The calculated results using numerical analysis are compared with measured ones under embankments built on soft clay at Berthierville and Olga in Quebec, Canada. It may be possible to explain the phenomenon of excess pore water pressure increase after the end of construction using the proposed nonlinear viscoplastic model.

  • To research and analyze the differential settlements of foundations specifically, site investigations of existing railways and metro were firstly carried out. Then, the centrifugal test was used to observe differential settlements in different position between foundations on the basis of investigation. The theoretical model was established according to the stress diffusion method and Fourier method to establish an analytical solution of embankment differential settlement between different foundations. Finally, theoretical values and experimental values were analyzed comparatively. The research results show that both in horizontal and vertical directions, evident differential settlement exists in a limited area on both sides of the vertical interface between different foundations. The foundation with larger elastic modulus can transfer more additional stress and cause relatively less settlement. Differential settlement value decreases as the distance to vertical interface decreases. In the vertical direction of foundation, mass differential settlement also exists on both sides of the vertical interface and foundation with larger elastic modulus can transfer more additional stress. With the increase of relative modulus of different foundations, foundation with lower elastic modulus has larger settlement. Meanwhile, differential settlement is more obvious. The main error sources in theoretical and experimental values include: (a) different load form; (b) foundation characteristics differences; (c) modulus conversion; (d) effect of soil internal friction.

  • In this study, an overtopping model experiments and three dimensional seepage characteristics at the deteriorated homogeneous reservoirs were performed to investigate the behavior of failure for embankment and spillway transitional zone due to overtopping. The failure pattern, pore water pressure, earth pressure and settlement by overtopping were compared and analyzed. The pattern of the failure by overtopping was gradually enlarged towards reservoirs crest from the spillway transition zone at initial stage. In the rapid stage and peak stage, the width and depth of failure gradually increased, and the pattern of the failure appeared irregular and several direction of the erosion. In the early stage, the pore water pressure at spillway transitional zone was more affected as its variation and failure width increased. In the peak stage, the pore water pressure was significantly increased in all locations due to the influence of seepage. The earth pressure increased gradually according to overtopping stage. The pore pressure by the numerical analysis was larger than the experimental value, and the analysis was more likely to increase steadily without any apparent variation. The horizontal and vertical displacements were the largest at the toe of slope and at the top of the dam crest, respectively. The results of this displacement distribution can be applied as a basis for determining the position of reinforcement at the downstream slope and the crest. The collapse in the overtopping stage began with erosion of the most vulnerable parts of the dam crest, and the embankment was completely collapsed as the overtopping stage increased.
