Thermoacoustic (TA) models have been widely used to predict combustion instability characteristics in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor. However, these techniques have shown some limitations in improving the model accuracy related to an over-simplification of the combustion system and flame geometry. Efforts were made in the current study to improve the limitations of the TA models. One strategy was to modify the actual flame location in the model, and another was to consider the heat release distribution through the flames. The modified TA model results show better accuracy in predicting the growth rate of instabilities compared with the previous results.

The vaporization and combustion of liquid spray in a cylindrical shape combustor was studied numerically. Mixture of liquid drops and air was assumed to be ejected from the center-hole and assisting air from the concentric annulus with swirling. Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme was adopted for the two phase calculation, and the interactions between the phases were considered with the PSIC model. Also adopted were the infinite conductivity model for drop vaporization, the equation of Arrhenius and the eddy break-up model for reaction rate, and the k-epsilon model for turbulence calculations. Gas flow patterns, drop trajectories and contours of temperature and mass fractions of the gas species were predicted with swirl number, drop diameter, and equivalence ratio taken as parameters. Calculations show that the vaporization and the consequent combustion efficiency enhance with the increase of the swirl number and/or with the decrease of drop size, and the higher maximum temperature is attained with the higher equivalence ratio.

The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

This study investigated the characteristics of spray generated by a liquid-liquid co-axial swirl injector used in a combustor of the liquid rocket engine. The linear stability analysis[1] was introduced In liquid sheet breakup and Post[2]'s collision model which considers shattering was adopted on the collision model after breakup. Every model was implemented to KIVA[3], which was adopted as solve. To validate the implemented models the cases of high and low injection velocity were calculated respectively and each result agreed well with test results.

In this study, the reflection coefficient (RC) and the flame transfer function (FTF) were measured by applying acoustic excitation to a duct-type model combustor and were used to predict the frequency of the combustion instability (CI). The RC is a value that varies with the excitation frequency and the geometry of the combustor as well as other factors. Therefore, in this study, an experimentally measured RC was used to improve the accuracy of prediction in the cases of 25% and 75% hydrogen in a mixture of hydrogen and methane as a fuel. When the measured RCs were used, an unstable condition was correctly predicted, which had not been predicted when the RCs had been assumed to be a certain value. The reason why the CI occurred at a specific frequency was also examined by comparing the peak of the FTF with the resonance frequency, which was calculated using Helmholtz's resonator analysis and a resonance frequency equation. As the CI occurred owing to the interaction between the perturbation in the rate of heat release and that in the pressure, the CI was frequent when the peak of the FTF was close to the resonance frequency such that constructive interference could occur.

This study predicts the basic characteristics of combustion instabilities in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor using ASCI3D code which is a FEM(Finite Element Method)-based Helmholtz solver. The prediction results show the good agreement with the measured data in modeling the overall combustion instability features, however, the code is found to overpredict the unstable conditions. As one of the efforts to improve the model accuracy, the effects of acoustic boundary conditions on the instability growth rate are analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the acoustic reflection coefficient has a great impact on the instability and the prediction accuracy can be enhanced by defining the precise acoustic conditions.

In order to identify the characteristics of the flame transfer function gain, cold-flow transfer function was introduced, which is the part of the combustion instability research. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide was used to obtain the cold-flow transfer function and input/output variables was measured by hot wire anemometry. Density and fluid flow rate affect the cold-flow transfer function gain and peak frequency. In addition, acoustic resonance frequency affects the peak frequency of gain in the fuel feeding line.

Flow structure and mixing characteristics in a micro combustor with a multi-hole baffle were numerically studied using the Reynolds stress model. The multi-hole baffle has geometrical features to produce multiple three-dimensional vortices inside combustion chamber. When the thickness of the baffle's geometrical factors changes, variations of vortical structures occur variously. Among these vortices, the vortex generated from the fuel stream exerts a critical influence on the mixing enhancement. The three-dimensional vortical structure, in its development state, was strongly dependent on the baffle thickness. In particular, as the baffle thickness decreases to values less than the diameter of the fuel hole, the jet stream in baffle holes changes from the parabolic to saddleback profile type. The sizes of recirculation zones inside combustion chamber and the mixing state were closely affected by the structure of the jet streams.

Turbulent flow and combustion characteristics in a micro can combustor with a baffle plate are investigated by a Reynolds Stress Model. In order to examine the geometric effects on the turbulent combusting flow, several baffle configurations are selected. The interrelation between the flow structure and the thermal field are investigated by examing the variation of recirculation region, flame length and heat loss. For the flow mixing, the decreasing air hole is more efficient than the decrease of the fuel hole. As the fuel or air hole diameter decreases, combustion efficiency is enhanced and flame length is decreased. Additionally, as the diameter of air hole decreases, the heat loss and combustion temperature are increased, while they are reduced with decreasing the diameter of fuel hole.

Gas turbine engine simulation program has been developed. In compressor and turbine, 2-D NS implicit code is used with k-$\omega$ SST turbulent model. In combustor, 0-D lumped method chemical equilibrium code is adopted under the limitations, the products are only 10 species of molecular and air-fuel is perfectly mixed state with 100% combustion efficiency at constant pressure. Fluid properties are shared on interfaces between engine components. The outlet conditions of compressor have been used as the inlet condition of combustor. The inlet condition of turbine comes from the compressor The back pressure in compressor outlet is transferred by the inlet pressure of turbine. Unsteady phenomena at rotor-stator in compressor and turbine is covered by mixing-plane method. The state of engine can be determined only by given inlet condition of compressor, outlet condition of turbine, equivalence ratio and rotating speed.
