  • A cost-effective dense WDM-PON employing wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot lasers has been demonstrated. We have successfully demonstrated a dense WDM transmission of 4×622 Mb/s upstream signal with 50-GHz channel spacing over 30-km conventional single mode fiber. We have also investigated the heating noise characteristics of a wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser and showed the wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser suppresses the intensity noise of the incoherent light injected which enables a dense WDM transmission with a channels spacing of 50 GHz.

  • A Gigabit Ethernet upstream transmission over a WDM-PON employing remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot lasers has been demonstrated. We have successfully demonstrated a WDM transmission of four Gigabit Ethernet channels with 100 GHz channel spacing over 30 km conventional single mode fiber. The measured f-factor was larger than 17.1 dB. We have also investigated the beating noise characteristics of a wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser and showed the remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser suppresses the intensity noise of the incoherent light injected, which cause a 6.3 dB SNR improvement compared with that of the conventional spectrum-sliced light source.

  • In this paper, we conduct a simulation of manipulating various pulsed laser operations through tuning the modulation depth of the saturable absorber in a laser cavity. The research, showing that various pulsed operations could be manipulated from Q-switching through Q-switched mode locking to mode locking by tuning the modulation depth of the saturable absorber in a cavity, has been studied by experimental means. We conduct a simulation with the Haus master equation to verify that these experimental results are consistent with expectations from theory. The time dependence of the gain was considered to express Q-switching fluctuation through applying a rate equation with the Haus master equation. Laser operation was manipulated from mode locking through Q-switched mode locking to Q-switching as modulation depth was increased, and this result agreed well with the theoretical expectation.

  • All-optical clock recovery from a 10 Gb/s RZ signal has been demonstrated using an actively mode-locked figure-eight laser incorporating a semiconductor optical amplifier in the loop-mirror scheme. Optical pulses with 10 ps pulse width were modulated by a LiNb03 external modulator at $2^{23}-1$ PRES and injected into the clock recovery circuit to extract optical pulses with 12 ps width. Regeneration of the original bit pattern has been accomplished by modulating the recovered clock with the same modulator, and no power penalty was observed at $10^{11}$..

  • We demonstrate a novel mode locked fiber laser gyroscope that utilizes a rare-earth doped fiber. The output of the gyroscope is a series of short optical pulses. Without rotation, the optical pulses are equally spaced in the time domain. With rotation, the intervals of the optical pulses changes. By measuring the separation of the optical pulses in time domain, the rotation rate could be obtained. We also discuss the polarization effect that can cause signal errors.errors.

  • We generated 9-fs pulses from a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser only using commercial optical components. Two sets of prisms pair made of fused silica were used to compensate group delay dispersion inside and outside the laser oscillator respectively, and broadband mirrors were used to obtain a broad spectrum. By comparison between reflectance curves of the broadband mirrors and those of previous ones, broadband mirrors which have high reflectance bandwidth of over 180 nm were found to be essential to produce sub-IO-fs pulses. ulses.

  • We experimentally measured the cold cavity loss of a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser in situ by using the relaxation oscillation frequency method. The relaxation oscillation frequency is measured for various pumping powers and the data is fitted by the least squares method with a theoretical curve of parameters including the cavity loss. We obtained a cavity loss of 15.3$\pm$0.5 dB which was found to agree with the results of direct transmission loss measurements.
