Design analysis for underground spaces requires evaluating stability related to tunnel collapses. A failure mode is one of the critical factors in the conventional methods of stability analysis. Therefore identification of failure modes is essential in securing safe construction in the phase of design analysis, instrumentation planning and implementation of reinforcing measures. In this study failure modes at the tunnel heading in granular soils are investigated using physical model tests and numerical simulation for various tunnel depths and ground surface inclinations. Test results indicated that the effect of depth and inclination of ground surface on a failure mode are significant. It is identified that, with an incase in depth, failure modes become localized in a region close to the tunnel. It is also known that an increase in the inclination of ground surface results in inclined and wide failure modes.
Conventional slope stability analysis is focused on calculating minimum factor of safety or maximum probability of failure. To minimize inherent uncertainty of soil properties and analytical model and to reflect various analytical models and its failure shape in slope stability analysis, slope stability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for multi failure mode was proposed. Linear programming recently introduced in system reliability analysis was used for calculation of simultaneous failure probability. System reliability analysis for various analytical models could be executed by this method. For application analysis for embankment, the results of this method shows that system stability of embankment calculate quantitatively.

This paper was aimed to investigate the shear strengthening effect of the pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet (CFS). Main tet parameters was the magnitude of pre-loading at the time of the retrofit and the strengthening method of carbon fiber sheet. A series of nine specimens was tested to evaluate the corresponding effect of each parameters such as maximum load capacity, load-deflection relationship, and failure mode. The results of this study showed that the failure mode is bonding failure between the concrete and the CFS before the tensile failure strain of the CFS is reached.
The failure rate of bidirectional dc-to-dc converter is predicted through the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and the fault-tree analysis (FTA) considering the operational risk. In order to increase the driving voltage of the electric vehicle efficiently, the bidirectional converter is attached to the front of the inverter. It has a boost mode for discharging battery power to the dc-link capacitor and a buck mode for charging the regenerative power to the battery. Based on the results of the FMEA considering the operating characteristics of the bidirectional converter, the fault-tree is designed considering the risk of the converter. After setting the design parameters for the MCU for the electric vehicle, we analyze the failure rate of the capacitor due to the output voltage ripple and the inductor component failure rate due to the inductor current ripple. In addition, we obtain the failure rate of major parts according to operating temperature using MIL-HDBK-217F. Finally, the failure rate and the mean time between failures (MTBF) of the converter are predicted by reflecting the part failure rate to the basic event of the fault-tree.
In this study, the flexural characteristics of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, typically used for bridges and parking structures, are investigated. A method to determine the flexural failure mode of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams comprised of compression failure (CF), tension failure (TF), and fiber sheet failure (FF) for different levels of GFRP strengthening is proposed. Moreover, the present study provides a formula to calculate the design flexural strength for each failure mode. In reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, an ideal failure mode can be achieved when the failure occurs in the following order: 1) yield of steel reinforcement, 2) failure of GFRP, and 3) compression failure of concrete. In the case of FF mode, due to GFRP failure before the polymer concrete crushing in compression region, a concept of equivalent rectangular block based on the ultimate limit state of concrete should not be used. Thus, this study suggests an idealized stress-strain curve for polymer concrete and finds parameters for stress block, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ based on the strain distribution in polymer concrete. Furthermore, the present study suggests an aspect ratio of 2.5 by examining the compressive stress distribution and design flexural strength characteristics for different aspect ratio of T-beams. This study also provides a design flexural strength formula, and validates its acceptability based on experiment and theoretical analysis.

Design analysis for underground spaces requires evaluating stability related to heading collapses. A failure mode is one of the critical factors in the conventional methods of stability evaluation. Identification of failure modes is, therefore, essential in securing safe construction. In this study failure modes at the tunnel heading in cohesionless soils are investigated using physical model tests for various tunnel depths and ground surface inclinations. Test results showed that the effect of depth and the inclination of ground surface on a failure mode are of significance. It is identified that, with an increase in depth, failure modes become localized in a region close to tunnel face. It is also known that an increase in the inclination of ground surface results in inclined an d wide failure modes. Numerical simulation of laboratory tests was performed, and shown that the numerical analysis is useful in identifying the heading failure modes, particularly for large underground spaces.

In order to evaluate a failure behavior of pipe with notch-type wall thinning, the present study performed full-scale pipe tests using the 102mm, Schedule 80 pipe specimen simulated notch- and circular-type thinning defects. The pipe tests were conducted under the conditions of both monotonic and cyclic bending moment at a constant internal pressure of 10 MPa. From the results. of experiment the failure mode, load carrying capacity, deformation ability, and fatigue life of a notch-type wall thinned pipe were investigated, and they were compared with those of a circular-type wall thinned pipe. The failure mode of notched pipe was similar to that of circular-type thinned pipe under the monotonic bending load. Under the cyclic bending load, however, the mode was clearly distinguished with variation in the shape of wall thinning. The load carrying capacity of a pipe containing notch-type wall thinning was about the same or slightly lower than that of a pipe containing circular-type wall thinning when the thinning area was subjected to tensile stress, whereas it was higher than that of a pipe containing circular-type thinning defect when the thinning area was subjected to compressive stress. On the other hand, the deformation ability and fatigue life of a notch-type wall thinned pipe was lower than those of a circular-type wall thinned pipe.
To study the eccentric compression behavior of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) columns, six UHPFRC columns and one high-strength concrete (HSC) column were tested. Variation parameters include load eccentricity, volume of steel fibers and stirrup ratio. The crack pattern, failure mode, bearing capacity, and deformation of the specimens were studied. The results showed that the UHPFRC columns had different failure modes. The large eccentric compression failure mode was the longitudinal tensile reinforcements yielded and many horizontal cracks appeared in the tension zone. The small eccentric compression failure mode was the longitudinal compressive reinforcements yielded and vertical cracks appeared in the compressive zone. Because of the bridging effect of steel fibers, the number of cracks significantly increased, and the width of cracks decreased. The load-deflection curves of the UHPFRC columns showed gradually descending without sudden dropping, indicating that the specimens had better deformation. The finite element (FE) analysis was performed to stimulate the damage process of the specimens with monotonic loading. The concrete damaged plasticity (CDP) model was adopted to characterize the behaviour of UHPFRC. The contribution of the UHPFRC tensile strength was considered in the bearing capacity, and the theoretical calculation formulas were derived. The theoretical calculation results were consistent with the test results. This research can provide the experimental and theoretical basis for UHPFRC columns in engineering applications.

Most commercial buildings among existing RC buildings in Korea have a multi-story wall-frame structure where RC shear wall is commonly used as its core at stairways or elevators. The members of the existing middle and low-rise wall-frame buildings are likely arranged in ordinary details considering building occupancy, and the importance and difficulty of member design. This is because there are few limitations, considerations, and financial burdens on the code for designing members with ordinary details. Compared with the intermediate or unique details, the ductility and overstrength are insufficient. Furthermore, the behavior of the member can be shear-dominated. Since shear failure in vertical members can cause a collapse of the entire structure, nonlinear characteristics such as shear strength and stiffness deterioration should be adequately reflected in the analysis model. With this background, an 8-story RC wall-frame building was designed as a building frame system with ordinary shear walls, and the effect of reflecting the shear failure mode of columns and walls on the collapse mechanism was investigated. As a result, the shear failure mode effect on the collapse mechanism was evident in walls, not columns. Consequently, it is recommended that the shear behavior characteristics of walls are explicitly considered in the analysis of wall-frame buildings with ordinary details.

This study investigates the effect of the diameter and thickness on crack initiation location and orientation of 90° elbows under in-plane mode displacement-controlled cyclic bending loads. Finite element (FE) analysis of cyclic failure test is conducted for elbow specimens under in-plane mode displacement-controlled cyclic bending to identify the parameters affecting crack location and orientation. Furthermore, parametric FE analysis of the pipe elbows with various pipe nominal sizes and Schedules is performed, and the crack location and orientation from the results of FE analysis are determined. It is found that the crack location and orientation in the pipe elbows are determined mianly by the radius to thickness ratio of pipe elbows (Rm/t). It is also found that the presence of internal pressure slightly increases the value of Rm/t at which the failure mode changes.
