High strength preloadable bolt assemblies are commonly adopted in beam-to-column bolted connections. Nowadays, two systems of high strength preloadable grade 10.9 bolt assembly are recommended in Europe for structural applications, namely HR and HV, which are characterized by different failure modes. Recently, experimental tests performed on HR and HV bolt assemblies highlighted that the type of bolt assembly may significantly influence the joint response. Therefore, the accuracy of numerical modelling of bolt assemblies is crucial to simulate effectively the non-linear behaviour of bolted joints with either failure mode 2 or mode 3 of the bolt rows. In light of these considerations, this present paper describes and discusses some modelling criteria for both HR and HV bolts to be implemented in 3D finite element models by finite element analysis and structural designers. The comparison between the calibrated models and experimental results shows the accuracy of the proposed assumptions in simulating all stages of assembly tensile response.
This paper presents a study on the behavior and design of bolted stainless steel plates under in-plane tension. Using an experimentally validated finite element (FE) program strength of stainless steel bolted plates under tension is examined with an emphasis on plate bearing mode of failure. A numerical parametric study was carried out which includes examining the behavior of stainless steel plate models with various proportions, bolt locations and in two different material grades. The models were designed to fail particularly in bolt tear-out and material piling-up modes. In the numerical simulation of the models, non-linear stress-strain material behavior of stainless steel was considered by using expressions which represent the full range of strains up to the ultimate tensile strain. Using the results of the parametric study, the effect of variations in bolt positions, such as end and edge distance and bolt pitch distance on bearing resistance of stainless steel bolted plates under in-plane tension has been investigated. Finally, the results obtained are critically examined using design estimations of the currently available international design guidance.
The yaw gearbox is a key device in a wind power generator that improves power generation efficiency by rotating hundreds of tons (400 to 600 tons) of nacelle so that the blade reaches 90 degrees in the wind direction. Recently, installation sites have been advancing from land to sea as they have become super-large at (8-12) MW to increase the economic feasibility of wind power generators and utilize excellent wind resources, and the target life of large wind power generators is 25 to 30 years. The yaw gearbox of 6 to 12 sets is installed in a very complex place inside the nacelle on the tower with parallels, and it is important to secure the reliability of the yaw gearbox because if a failure occurs after installation, it costs tens to hundreds of times the price of a new product to restore. In this study, equivalent loads were calculated by analyzing failure mode and field data, accelerated life test conditions were established, and a test device was constructed to perform the accelerated life tests and performance tests to ensure the reliability of the gearbox.
A series of rabbit common extensor tendon specimens of the humeral epicondyle were subjected to tensile tests under two displacement rates (100mm/min and 10mm/min) and different elbow flexion positions 45°, 90°and 135°. Biomechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength, failure strain, energy absorption and stiffness of the bone-tendon specimen were determined. Statistically significant differences were found in ultimate tensile strength, failure strain, energy absorption and stiffness of bone-tendon specimens as a consequence of different elbow flexion angles and displacement rates. The results indicated that the bone-tendon specimens at the 45°elbow flexion had the lowest ultimate tensile strength; this flexion angle also had the highest failure strain and the lowest stiffness compared to other elbow flexion positions. In comparing the data from two displacement rates, bone-tendon specimens had lower ultimate tensile strength at all flexion angles when tested at the 10mm/min displacement rate. These results indicate that creep damage occurred during the slow displacement rate. The major failure mode of bone-tendon specimens during tensile testing changed from 100% of midsubstance failure at the 90°and 135°elbow flexion to 40% of bone-tendon origin failure at 45°. We conclude that failure mechanics of the bone-tendon unit of the lateral epicondyle are substantially affected by loading direction and displacement rate.

In the case of helicopters, the development of parts technology is rapidly changing, and the complexity is rapidly increasing. Particularly, the surge of various electric and electronic systems is recognized as a problem that is directly related to the safety of the helicopter. Due to these problems, there is a growing interest in reliability evaluation in the face of the problem of confirming and certifying the reliability of parts in the development stage. In this paper, the analysis of the failure mechanism of the wiper system was carried out, and the priority and importance of each failure mode were checked by using the results, and major stress factors were derived and the corresponding acceleration model was selected. Also, the accelerated lifetime test time was calculated according to the life test time, acceleration status and acceleration level of the steady state by using the selected acceleration model and characteristic values.

Fracture behavior of carbon/epoxy laminates under pin loading is studied experimentally and analytically. Effects of ratios of specimen width to hole diameter and edge distance to hole diameter on bearing strength are investigated. Characteristic length of the laminates obtained using HK model has good agreement with the experimental data. The larger hole size induced, the lower bearing strength is measured under pin loading . The bearing strength and failure mode could be predicted using HK model and Zhangs analytical solution of stress distribution around a pin loaded hole. Chamis' prediction method of bearing strength is also considered to predict failure mode and bearing strength. A modification of Chamis' method is made using the factor of rupturc. The predicted bearing strength by the modified method is reasonably close to the experimental data.
In the note a comprehensive and optimal passive-active mode for describing the limit failure of circular shallow tunnel with settlement is put forward to predict the catastrophic stability during the geotechnical construction. Since the surrounding soil mass around tunnel roof is not homogeneous, with tools of variation calculus, several different curve functions which depict several failure shapes in different soil layers are obtained using virtual work formulae. By making reference to the simple-form of Power-law failure criteria based on numerous experiments, a numerical procedure with consideration of combination of upper bound theorem and stochastic medium theory is applied to the optimal analysis of shallow-buried tunnel failure. With help of functional catastrophe theory, this work presented a more accurate and optimal failure profile compared with previous work. Lastly the note discusses different effects of parameters in new yield rule and soil mechanical coefficients on failure mechanisms. The scope of failure block becomes smaller with increase of the parameter A and the range of failure soil mass tends to decrease with decrease of unit weight of the soil and tunnel radius, which verifies the geomechanics and practical case in engineering.
The understanding of tool-rock interaction mechanism is of high essence for improving the rock breaking efficiency and optimizing the drilling parameters in mechanical rock breaking. In this study, the tool-rock interaction models of indentation and cutting are carried out by employing the discrete element method (DEM) to examine the rock failure modes of various brittleness rocks and critical indentation and cutting depths of the ductile to brittle failure mode transition. The results show that the cluster size and inter-cluster to intra-cluster bond strength ratio are the key factors which influence the UCS magnitude and the UCS to BTS ratio. The UCS to BTS strength ratio can be increased to a more realistic value using clustered rock model so that the characteristics of real rocks can be better represented. The critical indentation and cutting depth decrease with the brittleness of rock increases and the decreasing rate reduces dramatically against the brittleness value. This effort may lead to a better understanding of rock breaking mechanisms in mechanical excavation, and may contribute to the improvement in the design of rock excavation machines and the related parameters determination.

The main objective of this experimental research was to investigate the Seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames infilled with perforated clay brick masonry wall of a type commonly used in Algeria. Four one story-one bay reinforced concrete infilled frames of half scale of an existing building were tested at the National Earthquake Engineering Research Center Laboratory, CGS, Algeria. The experiments were carried out under a combined constant vertical and reversed cyclic lateral loading simulating seismic action. This experimental program was performed in order to evaluate the effect and the contribution of the infill masonry wall on the lateral stiffness, strength, ductility and failure mode of the reinforced concrete frames. Numerical models were developed and calibrated using the experimental results to match the load-drift envelope curve of the considered specimens. These models were used as a bench mark to assess the effect of normalized axial load on the seismic performance of the RC frames with and without masonry panels. The main experimental and analytical results are presented in this paper.

In product design, the initial design stage is being increasingly emphasized because it significantly influences the successive product development and production stages. However, for larger and more complex products, it is very difficult to accurately predict product reliability in the initial design stage. Various design methodologies have been proposed to resolve this issue, but maintaining reliability while exploring design alternatives is yet to be achieved. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology for conceptual design considering reliability issues that may arise in the successive detailed design stages. The methodology integrates the independency of axiomatic design and the hierarchical structure of failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA), which is a technique widely used to analyze product reliability. We applied the proposed methodology to a liquefied natural gas fuel gas supply system to verify its effectiveness in the reliability improvement of the design process.
