Systematic experiments in $CH_4/Air$ counterflow diffusion flames diluted with He have been undertaken to study the oscillatory instability in which lateral flame size was less than burner nozzle diameter and thus lateral heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rate. The oscillatory instability arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity and occurs near extinction condition. The oscillation is the direct outcome from the advancing and retreating edge flame. The dynamic behaviors of extinction in this configuration can be classified into three modes; growing, harmonic and decaying oscillation mode near extinction. As the global strain rate decreases, the amplitude of the oscillation becomes larger. This is caused by the increase of lateral heat loss which can be confirmed by the reduction of lateral flame size. Oscillatory edge flame instabilities at low global strain rate are shown to be closely associated with not only Lewis number but also heat loss (radiation and lateral heat loss).

Wind turbines causes instabilities on the grid as their penetration increase. To mitigate harmful effects from wind turbines, transmission system operator(TSO) set up some requirements to obligate for wind generation operator for grid connection. So wind farm management system(WFMS) has important role to follow requirement from TSO, WFMS calculates available real power by considering wake effects, and dispatches real power order to each wind turbine in wind farm to optimize for decreasing load fatigue. To verify operation of WFMS, real-time simulator(RTS) is necessary. This paper deals with RTS configuration to verify WFMS operation. RTS includes wind farm model and power flow code. Normally, wind farm equivalent simple model makes wind turbines in wind farm to one wind turbine mode which cannot verify power flow in wind farm and WFMS operation. Thus, this paper makes wind farm model using simple wind turbine model with transfer function. Matlab is used for make power flow code and wind farm model to impose RTS and those model is certified by PSCAD/EMTDC.
Here we present a linear stability analysis and an MHD 2D model for the Parker-Jeans instability in the Galactic gaseous disk. The magnetic field is assumed parallel to a Galactic spiral arm, and the gaseous disk is modelled as a multi-component, magnetized, and isothermal gas layer. The model employs the observed vertical stratifications for the gas density and the gravitational acceleration in the Solar neighborhood, and the self-gravity of the gas is also included. By solving Poisson's equation for the gas density stratification, we determine the vertical acceleration due to self-gravity as a function of z. Subtracting it from the observed gravitational acceleration, we separate the total acceleration into self and external gravities. The linear stability analysis provides the corresponding dispersion relations. The time and length scales of the fastest growing mode of the Parker-Jeans instability are about 40 Myr and 3.3 kpc, respectively. In order to confirm the linear stability analysis, we have performed two-dimensional MHD simulations. These show that the Parker-Jeans instability under the self and external gravities evolves into a quasi-equilibrium state, creating condensations on the northern and southern sides of the plane, in an alternate manner.

Seismic qualification of equipment including piping is performed by using floor response spectra (FRS) or in-structure response spectra (ISRS) as the earthquake input at the base of the equipment. The amplitude of the FRS may be noticeably reduced when obtained from coupling analysis because of interaction between the primary structure and the equipment. This paper introduces a method using a modal synthesis approach to generate the FRS in a coupled primary-secondary system that can avoid numerical instabilities or inaccuracies. The FRS were generated by considering the dynamic interaction that can occur at the interface between the supporting structure and the equipment. This study performed a numerical example analysis using a typical nuclear structure to investigate the coupling effect when generating the FRS. The study results show that the coupling analysis dominantly reduces the FRS and yields rational results. The modal synthesis approach is very practical to implement because it requires information on only a small number of dynamic characteristics of the primary and the secondary systems such as frequencies, modal participation factors, and mode shape ordinates at the locations where the FRS needs to be generated.

An acoustic analysis of a fuel-rich gas generator for the drive of a turbopump in a liquid rocket engine has been performed and the length of a duct has been determined by comparing the resonant frequency of unstable acoustic modes to simulate an flight model gas generator, A practical short-length simulating duct has been determined by considering 1 or 2 wavelength of the unstable modes. Length adjustment of duct to turbopump can be a method to suppress a combustion instability problem by decoupling of acoustic mode and combustion characteristics. This method has been set up and validated with acoustic analysis and hot firing tests.

In particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation studies related to ion-ion two-stream instability, a reduced ion-to-electron mass ratio is often employed to save computation time. But it was not clearly verified how electrons dynamics are coupled with the slower evolution of ion-ion interactions under the external electric field. We have studied the ion beam driven instability using a 1D electrostatic PIC code by comparing different rescaling of parameter with real ion mass from the reference simulation with reduced ion mass. As the external electric field is stronger, the excited unstable mode range was more sensitively affected by the system size with the real mass ratio than the reduced ion mass. The results show that the reduced mass ratio should be used cautiously in PIC code as the electron dynamics can modify the ion instabilities. Additionally we found the formation of electron flat-top distribution in the final saturation stage. Simulation results show that in the early phase electrostatic solitary waves are quasi-periodically formed, but later they are fully dissipated resulting in heated, flat-top distributions. New electron beam components are occasionally formed. These are a consequence of the interaction with solitary wave structures. We parametrically investigate the development of electron phase space distributions for various drift speeds of ion beams and temperature ratios between ions and electrons
The design of tall buildings has recently provided many challenges to structural engineers. One such challenge is to minimise the cross-sectional dimensions of columns to ensure greater floor space in a building is attainable. This has both an economic and aesthetics benefit in buildings, which require structural engineering solutions. The use of high strength steel in tall buildings has the ability to achieve these benefits as the material provides a higher strength to cross-section ratio. However as the strength of the steel is increased the buckling characteristics become more dominant with slenderness limits for both local and global buckling becoming more significant. To arrest the problems associated with buckling of high strength steel, concrete filling and encasement can be utilised as it has the affect of changing the buckling mode, which increases the strength and stiffness of the member. This paper describes an experimental program undertaken for both encased and concrete filled composite columns, which were designed to be stocky in nature and thus fail by strength alone. The columns were designed to consider the strength in axial compression and were fabricated from high strength steel plate. In addition to the encased and concrete filled columns, unencased columns and hollow columns were also fabricated and tested to act as calibration specimens. A model for the axial strength was suggested and this is shown to compare well with the test results. Finally aspects of further research are addressed in this paper which include considering the effects of slender columns which may fail by global instabilities.

A two-dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed. The mode1 employs a rectangular grid system for its simplicity in the application of complicate coastal shore lines. To raise computing efficiency, implicit approximate factorization scheme is implemented in solving governing equations. An upwind-differencing is used to discretize convective terms, which provides a numerical dissipation automatically and suppresses any oscillations caused by nonlinear instabilities. Some numerical tests are made against the analytic solutions of a linearized shallow water equation to validate the developed numerical scheme, and comparisons of the model prediction with the analytic solution are satisfactory. As a real application, the tidal currents are computed on the Inchon area where the tidal currents are important for the design of new canal which is under construction.
This paper addresses temperature-dependent nonlinear vibration and instability of embedded functionally graded (FG) pipes conveying viscous fluid-nanoparticle mixture. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled by temperature-dependent orthotropic Pasternak medium. Reddy third-order shear deformation theory (RSDT) of cylindrical shells are developed using the strain-displacement relations of Donnell theory. The well known Navier-Stokes equation is used for obtaining the applied force of fluid to pipe. Based on energy method and Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived. Generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is applied for obtaining the frequency and critical fluid velocity of system. The effects of different parameters such as mode numbers, nonlinearity, fluid velocity, volume percent of nanoparticle in fluid, gradient index, elastic medium, boundary condition and temperature gradient are discussed. Numerical results indicate that with increasing the stiffness of elastic medium and decreasing volume percent of nanoparticle in fluid, the frequency and critical fluid velocity increase. The presented results indicate that the material in-homogeneity has a significant influence on the vibration and instability behaviors of the FG pipes and should therefore be considered in its optimum design. In addition, fluid velocity leads to divergence and flutter instabilities.

As a measure of susceptibility on the combustion instability, thermo-acoustic instabilities in rocket combustion system was considered for the estimation of the operational stability margin. Growth rate, which governs the asymptotic stability behavior of the system, was determined from the dynamic data measured during combustion tests in order to understand the dynamic characteristics of combustor system. Frequency transform technique was first applied to determine the system parameters such as growth rate and/or damping coefficient for an interested mode from the time series pressure data, and the PDFs of pressure amplitude were extracted from the amplitude envelope of pressure oscillation for the stochastic analysis.
