  • Bioremediation, which uses microbes to degrade most organic pollutants in soil and groundwater, can be used in solving environmental issues in various polluted sites. In this research, a wind-driven bioventing system is built to degrade about 20,000 mg/kg of high concentration diesel pollutants in soil-pollution mode. The wind-driven bioventing test was proceeded by the bioaugmentation method, and the indigenous microbes used were Bacillus cereus, Achromobacter xylosoxidans, and Pseudomonas putida. The phenomenon of two-stage diesel degradation of different rates was noted in the test. In order to interpret the results of the mode test, three microbes were used to degrade diesel pollutants of same high concentration in separated aerated batch-mixing vessels. The data derived thereof was input into the Haldane equation and calculated by non-linear regression analysis and trial-and-error methods to establish the kinetic parameters of these three microbes in bioventing diesel degradation. The results show that in the derivation of μm (maximum specific growth rate) in biodegradation kinetics parameters, Ks (half-saturation constant) for diesel substance affinity, and Ki (inhibition coefficient) for the adaptability of high concentration diesel degradation. The Ks is the lowest in the trend of the first stage degradation of Bacillus cereus in a high diesel concentration, whereas Ki is the highest, denoting that Bacillus cereus has the best adaptability in a high diesel concentration and is the most efficient in diesel substance affinity. All three microbes have a degradation rate of over 50% with regards to Pristane and Phytane, which are branched alkanes and the most important biological markers.

  • In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.

  • We investigated analytically and numerically the occurrence of modulation instability in fibers with periodic changes both in dispersion and gain. Previously, it has been known that the modulation instability is suppressed in dispersion managed solitons where dispersion is managed in such a way that the local dispersion alternates between the normal and the anomalous regimes. In this work, we enhanced the advantage of the dispersion management scheme by additionally introducing proper gain/loss profiles in fibers. The gain/loss profile is given by $\Gamma(z)=0.5/D(z)*(dD/dz)$, where D(z) represents the dispersion profile. The fundamental gain spectra of the modulation instability in the dispersion and gain managed fibers have been derived analytically and confirmed by numerical calculation. Our investigation reveals that in the dispersion and gain fibers the modulation instabilities are always much more suppressed compared to the case with only dispersion managed. In practical dispersion management schemes, dispersion profiles show discontinuity. and thus. the corresponding gain/loss profiles tend to be finite. In these cases, the gain/loss profiles were approximated by lumped gains/losses of finite values. Our numerical calculations confirm that this approximation also works well.

  • In this study, model combustion tests were conducted to investigate the combustion instability characteristics of swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine. To examine the effects of the combustion chamber resonant frequency and the injector mixing conditions, pressure fluctuations in the combustion chamber were measured by changing the combustion chamber length, injector recess length, and propellant mixture ratio. From the test results, the variation in the pressure fluctuations for each experimental condition was confirmed and the combustion stability was evaluated by stability mapping. It was found that the longitudinal mode and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities occurred due to the change in the combustion chamber and recess lengths.

  • The effect of alloying mode and porosity on the axial tension-tension fatigue behavior of a P/M steel of nominal composition Fe-4w/o Ni-1.5w/o Cu-O.5w/o Mo-O.5w/o C has been evaluated. Alloying modes utilized were elemental powder mixing, partial alloying(distaloy) and prealloying by water atomization; in each case the carbon was introduced as graphite prior to sintering. Powder compacts were sintered($1120{\circ}C$/30 min.) in 7Sv/o $H_2$/25v/o $N_2$ to densities in the range 6.77-7.2 g/$cm^3$. The dependence of fatigue limit response on alloying mode and porosity was interpreted in terms of the constituent phases and the pore and fracture morphologies associated with the three alloying modes. For the same nominal composition, the three alloying modes resulted in different sintered microstructures. In the elemental mix alloy and the distaloy, the major constituent was coarse and fine pearlite, with regions of Ni-rich ferrite, Ni-rich martensite and Ni-rich areas. In contrast, the prealloy consisted primarily of martensite by with some Ni-rich areas. From an examination of the fracture surfaces following fatigue testing it was concluded that essentially all of the fracture surfaces exhibited dimpled rupture, characteristic of tensile overload. Thus, the extent of growth of any fatigue cracks prior to overload was small. The stress amplitude for the three alloying modes at 2x$l0^6$ was used for the comparison of fatigue strengths. For load cycles <3x$l0^5$, the prealloy exhibited optimum fatigue response followed by the distaloy and elemental mix alloy, respectively. At load cycles >2x$l0^6$, similar fatigue limits were exhibited by the three alloys. It was concluded that fatigue cracks propagate primarily through pores, rather than through the constituent phases of the microstructure. A decrease in pore SIze improved the S-N behavior of the sintered steel.

  • In order to elucidate sedimentation processes and depositional environments in transitional area between continental shelf and coastal zone, sedimentologic study has been done with 84 surface sediments sampled in nearshore/offshore off the mid-western coast of the Korean Peninsula for 3 years (1996${\sim}$1999). The surface sediment can be classified into 4 facies (gravelly sand, sand, silty sand and sandy silt). Mean grain size, sorting, skewenss and kurtosis varies -0.39${\sim}7.82{\Phi}$, 0.36${\sim}4.68{\Phi}$, -0.38${\sim}$0.86, -1.56${\sim}$3.43, respectively. The textural parameters show a finer-grained and poorly-sorted trend shoreward, northward and southward from the central part of the study area. The positively-skewed distribution and relationship of each textural parameters indicate a tide-dominated depositional environment. According to C/M diagram, there are 3 different domains (mode A, B, C) of sediment transport mode. The northern part is characterized by bedload transport (mode A) and represents co-influence of wave and tide, whereas domain C in the southern part is controlled by uniform suspension transport (mode C), correlating with sandy-silt area. In the broad middle area, transport processes are complex (the mixture of bedload, graded suspension and uniform suspension; mode B). Hence, the subdivision depositional environments of this study area may be classified by 3 depositional environments dependent on the interplay of sediment supplies from river, relict sediments and hydrologic conditions. In results, the nearshore and offshore areas are thus characterized as a mixing zone between coastal terrigenous sediments and relict sediments in the continental shelf by complex processes (tide, wave and river flow). These sedimentation processes play an important role in producing distinct sedimentologic features in the transitional zone linking coastal and shelfal areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to defined the conception and characteristics of Post-Modernism and dealt with how they are expressed in costume. Major characteristics of Post-Modernism are Historicism, Pluralism, and Eclecticism and these are reflected in the costume. 1. Historicism of Post-Modernism is a trend recreate artistic symbolism which Modernism lacked in reference to historical factors of the past. It has been as a trend of restoration and an ornamental trend can be included in the category of historicism in that it restored historical ornaments. 2. Pluralism of Post-Modernism means an open-hearted attitude toward everything. In costume, it has been expressed as a trend of mixed fashion style such as ecology, street fashion and futurism, collapse and mix of genres, diversity of materials and emphasis on texture caused by assemblage, change of the use to escape from the conventional system and avant-garde. 3. Eclecticism of Post-Modernism is expressed as a blended fashion style based on the principal of de-dualism. It has several trends ; exotic trend by mixing both oriental and western culters, androgyny which is a mixed image of an and woman, and a trend to use many kinds of materials together influenced by collage which is an eclectic mode.

  • Robustness and controllability are the key factors in internal combustion engine commercialization. This study focuses on the combustion strategy to commercialize the low temperature diesel combustion technology. Various LTC combustion methods such as PPCI, MK and highly diluted mixing controlled LTC were conducted on 6.0L heavy duty diesel engine. To find the best feasible LTC strategy, emission level, fuel consumption and combustion safety during the combustion mode change were considered. Experiments were carried out under various engine operating conditions; engine speed & load, EGR level, injection timing. Finally, this study suggests realizable LTC combustion strategy; moderate EGR level and slight early injection are possible to considerably lower PM, NOx emission and expand LTC operating range up to 50% load without CO and HC emission.

  • We present the measurement of the diffraction efficiency and response time of the photorefractive grating recorded in $LiNbO_3$ photorefractive crystal doped with 4%-mole MgO. Two laser sources were used in the experiments; frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser ($\lambda$=532 nm) and cw Ar-ion laser ($\lambda$=514.5 nm). The same optical geometry was also used in both experiments in order to maintain the experimental consistency. Using the two-wave mixing scheme in both experiments we measured the maximum diffraction efficiency in the range of beam intensity of 1.6~100 W/ $\textrm{cm}^2$, and the response times for both cases of recording and erasing. Two sets of results obtained from the experiments are compared and analyzed.
