A D2D communication architecture under full control using SDN

  • Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a potential solution to the incessant increase in data traffic on cellular networks. The greatest problem is how to control the interference between D2D users and cellular mobile users, and between D2D users themselves. This paper proposes a solution for this issue by putting the full control privilege in cellular network using the software-defined networking (SDN) concept. A software virtual switch called Open vSwitch and several components are integrated into mobile devices for data forwarding and radio resource mapping, whereas the control functions are executed in the cellular network via a SDN controller. This allows the network to assign radio resources for D2D communication directly, thus reducing interference. This solution also brings out many benefits, including resource efficiency, energy saving, topology flexibility, etc. The advantages and disadvantages of this architecture are analyzed by both a mathematical method and a simple implementation. The result shows that implementation of this solution in the next generation of cellular networks is feasible.

  • By the recent success of the iPhone and the App Store, software developers from all over the world challenge to list their applications on the App Store and sell them worldwide. And major mobile companies in Korea are following the Apple by opening open markets to distribute software products running on their mobile devices. In this paper, we describe the development of an action game for iPod 'Hexa-Samkukgi'. The game is developed using Cocos2d engine.

  • The field of periocular biometrics has gained wide attention as an alternative or supplemental means to conventional biometric traits such as the iris or the face. Periocular biometrics provide intermediate resolution between the iris and the face, which enables it to support both. We have developed a periocular recognition system by using uniform Multiscale Local Binary Pattern (uMLBP) and attribute features. The proposed system has been evaluated in terms of major factors that need to be considered on a mobile platform (e.g., distance and facial pose) to assess the feasibility of the use of periocular biometrics on mobile devices. Experimental results showed 98.7% of rank-1 identification accuracy on a subset of the Face Recognition Grand Challenge (FRGC) database, which is the best performance among similar studies.

  • Although the massive MIMO system supports a high throughput, it requires a lot of channel information for channel compensation. For the reduction of overhead, the massive MIMO system generally uses TDD as duplexing scheme. Therefore, the massive MIMO system is sensitive to rapidly changing fast fading in according to time. For the improvement of reduced SINR by fast fading, the adaptive power control is proposed. Unlike the conventional scheme, the proposed scheme considers mobility of device for adaptive power control. The simulation of the proposed scheme is performed with consideration for mobility of device. The result of the simulation shows that the proposed scheme improves SINR. Since SINR is decreased in according to the number of device in the network by unit of cell, each base station can accommodate more devices by the proposed scheme. Also, because the massive MIMO system with high SINR can use high order modulation scheme, it can support higher throughput.

  • Traditional web-based services that require users to browse via documents and fill out forms, are difficult to use with mobile devices. Moreover, as the web paradigm assumes active clients, further complications are introduced in cases where the server is the active entity, instead of the client. This paper presents a Server-Centric Interaction Architecture (SCIA) for wireless applications. The architecture enables servers to initiate communication with clients as well as push secure targeted data to them, in a piecemeal fashion. It further enables the development of highly collaborative wireless services with interactive user interfaces.

An Offloading Strategy for Multi-User Energy Consumption Optimization in Multi-MEC Scene

  • Mobile edge computing (MEC) is capable of providing services to smart devices nearby through radio access networks and thus improving service experience of users. In this paper, an offloading strategy for the joint optimization of computing and communication resources in multi-user and multi-MEC overlapping scene was proposed. In addition, under the condition that wireless transmission resources and MEC computing resources were limited and task completion delay was within the maximum tolerance time, the optimization problem of minimizing energy consumption of all users was created, which was then further divided into two subproblems, i.e. offloading strategy and resource allocation. These two subproblems were then solved by the game theory and Lagrangian function to obtain the optimal task offloading strategy and resource allocation plan, and the Nash equilibrium of user offloading strategy games and convex optimization of resource allocation were proved. The simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm could effectively reduce the energy consumption of users.

Geometric Image Compensation Method for a Portable Projector Based on Prewarping Using 2D Homography

  • As portable multimedia devices become more popular and smaller, the use of portable projectors is also rapidly increasing. However, when portable projectors are used in mobile environments in which a dedicated planar screen is not available, the problem of geometric distortion of the projected image often arises. In this paper, we present a geometric image compensation method for portable projectors to compensate for geometric distortions of images projected on various types of planar or nonplanar projection surfaces. The proposed method is based on extraction of the two-dimensional (2D) geometric information of a projection area, setting of the compensation area, and prewarping using 2D homography. The experimental results show that the proposed method allows effective compensation for waved and arbitrarily shaped projection areas, as well as tilted and bent surfaces that are often found in the mobile environment. Furthermore, the proposed method is more computationally efficient than conventional image compensation methods that use 3D geometric information.

  • Recent studies have focused on self-management of hypertension using smart devices (cellular phones, tablets, watches). It has proven to be an effective tool for early detection and control of high Blood Pressure (BP) without affecting patients' daily routines. This systematic review surveys the existing self-monitoring systems, evaluate their effectiveness and compares the different approaches. We investigated the current systems in terms of various attributes, including methods used, sample size, type of investigation, inputs/ outputs, rate of success in controlling BP, group of users with higher response rate and beneficiaries, acceptability, and adherence to the system. We identified some limitations, shortcomings, and gaps in the research conducted recently studying the impact of mobile technology on managing hypertension. These shortcomings can generate future research opportunities and enable it to become more realistic and adaptive. We recommended including more observable factors and human behaviors that affect BP. Furthermore, we suggested that vital monitoring/logging and medication tuning are insufficient to improve hypertension control. There is also a need to observe and alter patient behavior and lifestyles.

  • In the past few years with the popularization of the Internet using mobile devices such as the universal in the field of information technology has made rapid development and spread, the width and speed of change is also expected to grow much. As a result Internet telephony (VoIP) was to emerging, VoIP as a leader in next-generation converged services, the proliferation of IPTV services, including the successful introduction and subsequent convergence of the early to gauge whether the settlement is much distance in terms of importance. Therefore, this research using the Internet and telephone customer satisfaction survey, and Kano analysis is important from the perspective of the customer requirements by looking at what the Internet phone service in the development and improvement priorities are supposed to be able to stand.

A Framework for Provisioning Internet of Things Context-aware Services (사물인터넷 기반의 상황인지 서비스를 위한 프레임워크 설계)

  • The emergence of new types of embedded computing devices and developments in wireless networking are broadening the domain of computing from the work place and home office to other facets of everyday life. This trend is expected to lead to a proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) environments, in which inexpensive and interconnected computing devices are capable of supporting users in a range of tasks. Context-aware computing is a key source to develop such smart services. However, there are many challenges to enable services to be smart; Heterogeneous Computing Environments, Resource Limitations, Large Amount of Data Produced, and Different Requirements for Context Interpretation. Because of these challenges, there are difficulties in providing smart service by utilizing IoT devices. Currently, many researchers are conducting researches on mobile-computing based smart service development and provisioning and network infrastructure for interconnected IoT devices. Still, there are some limitations on developing core technologies for IoT computing based smart service development. In order to remedy this situation, this thesis presents a reusable framework that provides unique and noble features which are required in developing advanced context-aware IoT applications.
