  • Recently as the number of smartphone user is growing rapidly, android is also getting more interest in digital forensic. However, there is not enough research on digital data acquisition and analysis based on android platform's unique characteristics so far. Android system stores all the related recent systemwide logs from the system components to applications in volatile memory, and therefore, the logs can potentially serve as important evidences. In this paper, we propose a digital data acquisition and analysis system for android which extracts meaningful information based on the correlation of android logs and user activities from a device at runtime. We also present an efficient search scheme to facilitate realtime analysis on site. Finally, we demonstrate how the proposed system can be used to reconstruct the sequence of user activities in a more intuitive manner, and show that the proposed search scheme can reduce overall search and analysis time approximately 10 times shorter than the normal regular search method.

  • As digital evidence becomes more important in criminal investigations, disputes are increasing in court. As media diversifies and the scope of analysis expands, the level of expertise in digital forensics is also increasing. However, no competency model has been developed to define the capabilities of digital evidence examiners or to judge their expertise. There have been some studies that have derived the capabilities necessary for digital evidence examiner, but they are still insufficient. Therefore, in this study, 25 competency evaluation factors in a total of 9 competency groups were defined using methodologies such as expert FGI and Delphi survey. Specifically, it was defined as Digital Forensics Theory, Digital Evidence Collection&Management, Disk Forensics, Mobile Forensics, Video Forensics, infringement forensics, DB Forensics, Embedded(IoT) Forensics, and Cloud Forensics. The digital evidence examiner competency model is expected to be used in various fields such as recruitment, education and training, and performance evaluation in the future.

  • By applying artificial intelligence to image editing technology, it has become possible to generate high-quality images with minimal traces of manipulation. However, since these technologies can be misused for criminal activities such as dissemination of false information, destruction of evidence, and denial of facts, it is crucial to implement strong countermeasures. In this study, image file and mobile forensic artifacts analysis were conducted for detecting image manipulation. Image file analysis involves parsing the metadata of manipulated images and comparing them with a Reference DB to detect manipulation. The Reference DB is a database that collects manipulation-related traces left in image metadata, which serves as a criterion for detecting image manipulation. In the mobile forensic artifacts analysis, packages related to image editing tools were extracted and analyzed to aid the detection of image manipulation. The proposed methodology overcomes the limitations of existing graphic feature-based analysis and combines with image processing techniques, providing the advantage of reducing false positives. The research results demonstrate the significant role of such methodology in digital forensic investigation and analysis. Additionally, We provide the code for parsing image metadata and the Reference DB along with the dataset of manipulated images, aiming to contribute to related research.

  • Realm is an open source database developed to replace SQLite, which is commonly used in mobile devices. The data stored in the database must be checked during the digital forensic analysis process for mobile devices because it can help to understand the behavior of the user and whether the mobile device is operating or not. In addition, since the user can intentionally use anti-forensic techniques such as deleting data stored in the database, research on how to recover deleted records is needed. In this paper, we propose a method to recover records that have not been overwritten after deletion based on the analysis of the structure and record and deletion process of the Realm database file.

  • To prove the integrity of digital evidence on the investigation procedure, the data which is using the MD 5(Message Digest 5) hash-function algorithm has to be discarded, if the integrity was damaged on the investigation. Even though a proof restoration of the deleted area is essential for securing the proof regarding a main phase of a case, it was difficult to secure the decisive evidence because of the damaged evidence data due to the difference between the overall hash value and the first value. From this viewpoint, this paper proposes the novel model for the mobile forensic procedure, named as "E-Finder(Evidence Finder)", to ,solve the existing problem. The E-Finder has 5 main phases and 15 procedures. We compared E-Finder with NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology) and Tata Elxsi Security Group. This paper thus achieved the development and standardization of the investigation methodology for the mobile forensics.

  • This study conducted a digital forensic analysis of Signal and Telegram, two secure messengers widely used in the Android environment. As mobile messengers currently play an important role in daily life, data management and security within these apps have become very important issues. Signal and Telegram, among others, are secure messengers that are highly reliable among users, and they safely protect users' personal information based on encryption technology. However, much research is still needed on how to analyze these encrypted data. In order to solve these problems, in this study, an in-depth analysis was conducted on the message encryption of Signal and Telegram and the database structure and encryption method in Android devices. In the case of Signal, we were able to successfully decrypt encrypted messages that are difficult to access from the outside due to complex algorithms and confirm the contents. In addition, the database structure of the two messenger apps was analyzed in detail and the information was organized into a folder structure and file format that could be used at any time. It is expected that more accurate and detailed digital forensic analysis will be possible in the future by applying more advanced technology and methodology based on the analyzed information. It is expected that this research will help increase understanding of secure messengers such as Signal and Telegram, which will open up possibilities for use in various aspects such as personal information protection and crime prevention.

  • With the increase in smartphone user, mobile forensics has become an essential element in modern digital forensic investigation. Mobile messenger data is very important data in mobile forensics because it can acquire information such as user's life pattern and mental state. In order to analyze messenger data, a decryption technique of an encrypted messenger data is required. Since most messengers provide a message deleting function, a technique for recovering deleted messages is required. WeChat Messenger, a messenger used by about 1 billion people around the world, uses IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) information to encrypt data and provides message deletion function. In this paper, we propose a data decryption method in the absence of IMEI information and propose a method for recovering deleted messages using FTS (Full Text Search) database created for full-text search function of SQLite database.

  • Recently, our lives have become more convenient and our work more efficient as a result of these cell phones. On the other hand, they have also caused diverse side-effects, including threats of blackmail with invasion of privacy, disclosure of personal information, as well as security breaches, and an overall increase in distrust between people. Recognizing the need to quickly collect digital evidence with an increase in cell phone crimes, this paper proposes to develop such standard module.

  • Computer Forensics functions by defending the effects and extracting the evidence of the side effects for production at the court. Has the faultlessness of the digital evidence been compromised during the investigation, a critical evidence may be denied or not even be presented at the trial. The presented monograph will deliberate the faultlessness-establishing chain procedures in disk forensics. system forensics, network forensics, mobile forensics and database forensics. Once the faultlessness is established by the methods proposed, the products of investigation will be adopted as a leading evidence. Moreover, the issues and alternatives in the reality of digital investigation are presented along with the actual computer forensics cases, hopefully contributing to the advances in computer digital forensics and the field research of information security.
