  • We investigated the magnetism and electronic structures for the layered structures consisting of (110) layers of zinc-blende CrAs and MnAs. We calculated the electronic structures for $(CrAs)_3(MnAs)_3(110)$ superlattice consisted of alternating three layers of CrAs(110) and MnAs(110) by the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The calculated magnetic moment of Cr in interface layer ($3.07\;\mu_B$) was slightly larger than that of Cr atom in center layer ($3.06\;\mu_B$), while that of interface Mn atom ($3.74\;\mu_B$) was slightly smaller than the value of Mn atom in center layer ($3.76\;\mu_B$). The electronic structure and half-metallicity in this superlattice were discussed using the calculated density of states.

  • Adsorption and oxidation of polychlorinated phenols by suspended ${\sigma}-MnO_2$ in aqueous solution have been studied. Of the proposed mechanism, adsorption reaction of chlorophenols onto ${\sigma}-MnO_2$(s) depended upon the pH of the solution and the concentration of chlorophenol. Adsorption isotherms showed a reasonably good fit to the Langmuir isotherm. From the pH dependence of adsorption partition coefficient and the linear relationship between octanol-water partition coefficient and adsorption partiton coefficient of chlorophenol, it is estimated that adsorption is dominated by its hydrophobicity. The rate of electron transfer reaction evaluated from the rate of reductive dissolution of ${\sigma}-MnO_2$(s) depended linearly upon the concentration of chlorophenol and the pH of medium. Observed rate constants ($K_0$) of the meta-substituted chlorophenol were lower than that of the ortho-or para-chlorophenol because of resonance effect of chlorophenoxy radical. It is indicated that this radical is produced in the adsorption process and the electron transfer reaction is rate determining.

  • We synthesized $(La,\;Sr)MnO_{3+{\delta}$ as a cathode for SOFC by glycine nitrate process(GNP) and knew the different properties of $(La_{1-x}Sr_x)MnO_3$ by using nitrate solution and oxide solution as starting material. In case of using nitrate solution as a starting material, main crystal phase peak of $LaMnO_3$ increased as Sr content added up and a peak of $Sr_2MnO_4\;and\;La_2O_3$ was showed as a secondary phase. We added Mn excess to control a crystal phase. In this case, the electrical conductivity had a high value 210.3S/cm at $700^{\circ}C$ On the other side, when we used oxide solution as a starting material, we found main crystal phase of $LnMnO_3$ to increase as Sr content added up and a peak of $La_2O_3$ as a secondary phase. Similary, we added Mn excess to control a crystal phase in this case. We knew $(La,\;Sr)MnO_3$ powder to sinter well and the electrical conductivity of the sintered body at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs was 152.7s/cm at $700^{\circ}C$. The sintered $(La,\;Sr)MnO_3$ powder at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs got the deoxidization peak, depending on the temperature md in case of using nitrate solution as a start ing material the deoxidization peak was showed at $450^{\circ}C$ which is lower than used a oxide solution as a starting material. As a result, when $(La,\;Sr)MnO_3$ powder was synthesized to add Mn excess and to use nitrate solution as a starting material, we found it to have the higher deoxidization property and considered it as a cathode for m properly. And we found it to have different electrical conduct ivity the synthesized $(La,\;Sr)MnO_3$ powder by using different start ing materials like nitrate solution and oxide solution which influence a sintering density and crystal phase.

  • Retaining rings are used to support the field winding end turns from the centrifugal force by the high speed of the field and these are the overstressed parts among the generator parts. There have been several retaining failures in Europe and America, all attributable to stress corrosion cracking in 18Mn-5Cr steel. Since then, each manufacture companies have developed a good 18Mn-5Cr steel in temperature, strength characteristic and it is used in many field now. From many findings and test results, we could conformed that the failure might be grown in the overstressed condition unrelated to the moisture particle.

  • One problem in giant magnetoresistance(GMR) spin valves and magnetic tunneling junctions(MTJ) exchange biased by Mn-based antiferromagnets is the Mn diffusion into the ferromagnetic layer and other layers upon annealing.$^{1-3}$ It seems that Mn diffusion that may occur during annealing has a key role in the exchange biasing. We have fabricated multilayers inserting the nanolayer(NL) between antiferromagnet and ferromagent using ion-beam deposition system to study the diffusion effect for the exchange bias. (omitted)

  • Sixty four bacterial colonies which were able to oxidize the manganese were isolated from soil samples in Mokcheon and Ochang area. Among them, one bacterial strain was selected for this study based on its higher manganese oxidation, and this selected bacterial strain was identified as Aeromonas sp. MN44 through physiological-biochemical test and analysis of its 16s rRNA sequence. Aeromonas sp. MN44 was able to utilize lactose but did not utilize various carbohydrates as a sole carbon source. Aeromonas sp. MN44 showed a very sensitive to antibiotics such as kanamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline and spectinomycin, and heavy metal such as cadmium. But this strain showed a high resistance up to mg/ml unit to heavy metals such as lithium and manganese. Optimal manganese oxidation condition of Aeromonas sp. MN44 was pH 7.4 and manganese oxidation activity was inhibited by proteinase K and boiling treatment. So, we concluded that this factor was protein. The manganese oxidizing factor produced by Aeromonas sp. MN44 was partial purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl 650M ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex gel filtration chromatography. Its molecular mass was about 113 kDa.

  • A layer experiment was conducted to determine the effects of supplementary methionine chelates (Cu, Zn and Mn), individual or in combination, on laying performance, eggshell quality, gizzard erosion, and IgG level of serum for 8 weeks. Five hundred 96-wk-old force molted ISA Brown layers were assigned to five dietary treatments. Basal diet was formulated to meet or exceed the nutrients requirements listed in NRC (1994). Five experimental diets were control, Zn-methionine chelate (Zn-Met) supplemented, Cumethionine chelate (Cu-Met) supplemented, Zn-Mn-methionine chelate (Zn-Mn-Met) supplemented and Zn-Mn-Cu-Met supplemented diet. Each treated diet was supplemented with respective mineral(s) at the level of 100 ppm in the form of methionine chelate. Egg production was increased by Cu-Met supplementation but decreased by Zn-Met supplementation. Egg weight was significantly (p<0.05) lower in Cu-Met treatment than those of the control and Zn-Met treatment. Specific gravity of eggs and eggshell strength were highest and soft egg production was lowest in Cu-Met treatment. Gizzard erosion index was significantly increased by supplementation of Cu-Met, Zn-Mn-Met or Zn-Mn-Cu-Met. Zinc content in liver significantly increased by Zn-Met, but not by Zn-Mn-Cu-Met treatment. In conclusion, 100 ppm Cu in Cu-Met chelate improved laying performance and eggshell quality but also increased gizzard erosion index. Supplementation of Zn-Met or its combination with other mineral chelates had no beneficial effects on laying performance and eggshell quality.

  • The mitochondrial antioxidant protein manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) may represent a new type of tumor suppressor protein. Overexpression of the cDNA of this gene by plasmid or recombinant lentiviral transfection in various types of cancer leads to growth suppression both in vitro and in vivo. We previously determined that changes in MnSOD expression had bidirectional effects on adriamycin (ADR) when combined with nitric oxide (NO). Radiation induces free radicals in a manner similar to ADR, so we speculated that MnSOD combined with NO would also have a bidirectional effect on cellular radiosensitivity. To examine this hypothesis, TE-1 human esophageal squamous carcinoma cells were stably transfected using lipofectamine with a pLenti6-DEST plasmid containing human MnSOD cDNA at moderate to high overexpression levels or with no MnSOD insert. Blastidicin-resistant colonies were isolated, grown, and maintained in culture. We found that moderate overexpression of MnSOD decreased growth rates, plating efficiency, and increased apoptosis. However, high overexpression increased growth rates, plating efficiency, and decreased apoptosis. When combined with NO, moderate overexpression of MnSOD increased the radiosensitivity of esophageal cancer cells, whereas high MnSOD overexpression had the opposite effect. This finding suggests a potential new method to kill certain radioresistant tumors and to provide radioresistance to normal cells.
