  • Since 1990, identifying the sex of fetus and illegal abortion has brought the sex ratio imbalance at birth in Korea due to a notion of preferring a son to a daughter, socio-economic development, population policy, and so forth. Although there have been many researches such as time series analysis and region difference analysis to monitor this sex ratio imbalance, they have a defect that time and space could not be included in the analysis simultaneously. This study analyzes the sex ratio imbalance at birth, taking into account time and region at the same time. The analysis considered the numbers of male and female babies, who were born as the third or latter in their families, in 2000 and 2001 at 234 Gu / Si / Goon administrative districts. Here, we suggest a mixture model of binomial distributions, assuming heterogeneous populations. The estimation of the location parameters, weights and correlation coefficient of the mixture model is conducted by the EM algorithm, and the heterogeneity of the regions is expressed as a picture using ArcView GIS.

  • This study estimated the fermentation characteristics and nutrient value of corn-lablab bean mixture silages relative to corn silages. The effects of feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages on nutrient apparent digestibility and milk production of dairy cows in northern China were also investigated. Three ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were used to determine the ruminal digestion kinetics and ruminal nutrient degradability of corn silage and corn-lablab bean mixture silages. Sixty lactating Holstein cows were randomly divided into two groups of 30 cows each. Two diets were formulated with a 59:41 forage: concentrate ratio. Corn silage and corn-lablab bean mixture silages constituted 39.3% of the forage in each diet, with Chinese wildrye hay constituting the remaining 60.7%. Corn-lablab bean mixture silages had higher lactic acid, acetic acid, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ash, Ca, ether extract concentrations and ruminal nutrient degradability than monoculture corn silage (p<0.05). Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentrations of corn-lablab bean mixture silages were lower than those of corn silage (p<0.05). The digestibility of DM, CP, NDF, and ADF for cows fed corn-lablab bean mixture silages was higher than for those fed corn silage (p<0.05). Feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages increased milk yield and milk protein of dairy cows when compared with feeding corn silage (p<0.05). The economic benefit for cow fed corn-lablab bean mixture silages was 8.43 yuan/day/cow higher than that for that fed corn silage. In conclusion, corn-lablab bean mixture improved the fermentation characteristics and nutrient value of silage compared with monoculture corn. In this study, feeding corn-lablab bean mixture silages increased milk yield, milk protein and nutrient apparent digestibility of dairy cows compared with corn silage in northern China.

  • Rising oil price and environmental problems are causing automotive industry to increase fuel efficiency. Improved fuel efficiency in gasoline engine was made possible by development of DISI gasoline engine. Since fuel is injected inside cylinder directly, in-cylinder temperature can be reduced than multi-port injection engine and this leads to increased compression ratio. However, engine performance is largely dependent on mixture formation process due to in-cylinder fuel injection. Especially for spray guided and air guided DISI gasoline engine, injection direction is important factor to mixture preparation. It is because interaction between intake flow and spray affect fuel-air mixture. Hence, in this study, mixture formation characteristics were analyzed by varying injection direction using KIVA 3V release2 code. Residual gas was considered for assuming combustion. Therefore, initial condition for in-cylinder temperature was set equal to the end state of exhaust stroke of combustion cycle. Since angle between intake air flow direction and spray direction affects fluid flow and evaporation field, mixture distribution was affected by fuel injection direction dominantly.

  • In order to investigate the toxicities of S-bioallethrin (5-biol) and its combination treatment with N-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide (MGK-264), the acute and subacute toxicity, and enzyme activity test were performed. $LD_{50}$ levels of S-biol and MGK-264 in rats are 640 mg/kg and 3, 280 mg/kg respectively. However, when rats were treated with the mixture of S-biol and MGK-264 (1 : 5 ratio), the $LD_{50}$ was decreased to 545 mg/kg. In serological analysis, ALT and LDH were increased in animals treated with the mixture. Also glucose level was significantly increased after 5 weeks in animals treated with both S-biol and the mixture. Other biochemical parameters such as cytochrome P-450 and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase in the liver and kidney were shown to be not significantly changed. Levels of total ATPase and $mg^{2+}$ ATPase were significantly decreased in the liver of animals treated with the mixture after 4-5 weeks. In addition, S-biol can alone decrease total ATPase activity. Total ATPase activity was also significantly decreased in the kidney after 5 week treatment with the mixture. Similarily, glucose-6-phosphatase activity was significantly decreased in animals treated with the mixture. When either S-biol or MGK-264 was administered, cholinesterase and carboxyesterase activities were slightly decreased but they were significantly decreased when the mixture was administered.

  • Various mixtures were prepared depending on the mixing ratio of Scutellaria baicalensis hot water extract (SB-HW) and Chrysanthemum morifolium ethanol extract (CM-E) and their anti-inflammatory activity were compared. Among them, SB-HW (80 ㎍/mL)/CM-E (120 ㎍/mL) or SB-HW (40 ㎍/mL)/CM-E (160 ㎍/mL) significantly inhibited LPS-stimulated NO and IL-6 levels in RAW 264.7 cells. The SB-HW (80 ㎍/mL)/CM-E (120 ㎍/mL) mixture, which was determined as active mixture, significantly reduced MUC5AC secretion in PMA and LPS-induced NCI-H292 cells. The active mixture also reduced the production of PGE2 and IL-8 in PMA-induced A549 cells. LC-MS/MS analysis showed that the active mixture was composed of high contents of flavone glycosides, such as baicalin and cynaroside. Western blot analysis indicated that the active mixture suppressed phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, and p38, associating with the inhibition of MAPK signaling. Taken together, our results suggest that the active mixture could be applied as a new anti-inflammatory herbal medicine

  • The objective of this study is to establish an rational mixture-proportioning procedure for low-$CO_2$ concrete using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) achieving the targeted $CO_2$ reduction ratio as well as the conventional requirements such as initial slump, air content, and 28-day compressive strength of concrete. To evaluate the effect of SCM level on the $CO_2$ emission and compressive strength of concrete, a total of 12537 data sets were compiled from the available literature and ready-mixed concrete plants. The amount of $CO_2$ emission of concrete was assessed under the system boundary from cradle to concrete production stage at a ready-mixed concrete plant. Based on regression analysis using the established database, simple equations were proposed to determine the mixture proportions of concrete such as the type and level of SCMs, water-to-binder ratio, and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratio. Furthermore, the $CO_2$ emissions for a given concrete mixture can be straightforwardly calculated using the proposed equations. Overall, the developed mixture-proportioning procedure is practically useful for determining the initial mixture proportions of low-$CO_2$ concrete in the ready-mixed concrete field.

  • Two trials were conducted to study the effects of two Chinese herbal polysaccharides, Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) and Achyranthes bidentata polysaccharides (ABPS), and one Chinese herbal saponin, Acantbepanax senticosus saponin (ASS), on the immunity and growth performance of weaned pigs. Experiment 1 was a 14-day growth assay, in which 32 weaned pigs were randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments: i) 0.05% talcum powder control; ii) 0.05% APS; iii) 0.05% mixture of APS and ASS in a 1:1 ratio by weight; and iv) 0.05% mixture of APS, ASS, and ABPS in a ratio of 1:1:1 by weight. Blood samples were collected on day 14 to determine plasma parameters. Feed intake, body weight gain, and feed efficiency were also determined. Experiment 2 was a 21-day immunity assay, in which 16 weaned pigs were randomly allotted to one of two dietary treatments: i) 0.05% talcum powder control; and ii) 0.05% mixture of APS and ASS in a 1:1 ratio by weight. On day 21, pigs were challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and 3 h later blood samples were collected and analyzed for lymphocyte proliferation as well as interleukin 6 (IL-6), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), growth hormone (GH), and cortisol levels. In Experiment 1, feeding Chinese herbal polysaccharides and saponin increased growth performance of the pigs. The effects of the mixture of APS and ASS were especially notable, as there was a significant improvement in growth performance compared with the control (p<0.05). The plasma concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG), nitric oxide (NO), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were increased in all treatments groups, with the mixture of APS and ASS increasing the level of IgG and NOS significantly (p<0.05), compared with the control. There was no difference in the NO level between the control and treatment groups (p>0.05). In Experiment 2, Chinese herbal polysaccharides and saponin showed immunostimulating effects. The level of cortisol, GH, and IGF-I were significantly increased (p>0.05), and the level of IL-6 showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the APS and ASS treatment after the LPS challenge. The mixture of APS and ASS could stimulate the blood lymphocyte proliferation significantly whether the LPS was injected or not (p<0.05). These results show that Chinese herbal extracts can improve growth performance and stimulate immunity of weaned pigs. A mixture of APS and ASS, compared with APS alone, could be a new kind of immunostimulant for weaned pigs, which could result in greater positive effects on their growth performance and immunity.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cow manure as additive material on the ripening of sewage s sludge for vermistabiJization. The changes of the waste properties by ripening for 50days were observed as a function of the v various mixture ratios of sewage sludge ‘and cow manure. The pH values of the mixture wastes decreased from 7.5-7.67 to 6_ 9~7.2 by the ripening for 50days, and the mixture ratio made dIfferent pH values. The initial value of oxidation-reduction p potential (Eh) of the mixture waste was a negative (-) value indicating an unfavorable condition for earthworm after, but the v values of Eh increased with the opening time. The Increase rate at Eh value was prop$\alpha$rtional to the mixture ratio of cow m manure. The value of alkalinity was also changed into the favorable range for earthworm after 50days except for non-use of 1 the cow manure When the mixture ratio of the cow manure increased from 10% to 30%, the growth of earthworms increased h from 63.7% to 88.3 % tor the survival rate, 265% to 321% for the liveweight increasing rate and 66.7_7% to 91% for hatching f rate of the cocoons. It can be concluded that the proper content of tbe cow manure in the sewage sludge to ensure effective v vermistabilization was over 20%, when the mixture was ripened during 50 days. The quantity of ingestion and 며ectian at 20%-30% was found to be O.15--i.L18g sludge and 0 1l--O.14g solid per capacity earthworm per day, respectively.

  • Constructed wetlands were typically cost less to build and operate, and require less energy than standard mechanical treatment technology but they have similar performance to centralized wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, they were constructed especially many in rural areas, where are small villages but not industries. Accordingly, plantless column tests were performed to investigate the possibility on using zeolite as a filter medium of constructed wetland for the wastewater treatment. $COD_{cr}$ removal efficiency was 94.63% at hydraulic load $314L/m^2{\cdot}d$ and filtering hight 100cm filled with a zeolite mixture. This zeolite mixture consisted of 1 : 1 by volume of a zeolite in the diameter range of 0.5 to 1mm to a zeolite in the diameter range of 1 to 3mm. According, hydraulic load $314L/m^2{\cdot}d$ was considered as optimal. Three zeolite mixture were used to determine the optimal mixing ratio by volume of a zeolite(A) in the diameter range of 0.5 to 1mm to a zeolite(B) in the diameter range of 1 to 3mm diameter. 1 : 3, 1 : 1 and only B in A to B by volume were tested at hydraulic load $314L/m^2{\cdot}d$ and filtering hight 100cm. $COD_{cr}$ removal efficiency was more than 89% at mixing ratios of 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 in A to B. Removal efficiency was lower at the column filled with only B. Removal efficiency was better at filter medium filled with mixing ratio 1 : 1 in A to B than with the other mixing ratios. Thus, it was found that the mixture of mixing ratio 1 : 1 in A to B was appropriate for filter medium of constructed wetland. Removal efficiency was higher in down-flow than in up-flow, and $COD_{cr}$ and BOD were removed best in 20cm filter height near feeding area.

  • In this study, the absorption kinetics of $CO_2$onto a mixture of AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) MEA (monoethanolamine) water were investigated at 30 and 4$0^{\circ}C$ using a packed absorption tower. Solubility and absorption rate of $CO_2$into alkanolamine solutions and optimal condition of $CO_2$absorption process were investigated. The experimental conditions are as follows; temperature of 30 and 4$0^{\circ}C$, gas flow rate of 3ι/min for the absorption tower, and liquid flow rate of 0.1ι/min. Feed gas was a mixture of 85% $N_2$and 15% $CO_2$. The experimental results showed that AMP had greater solubilities and faster absorption rates than MEA and DEA. In addition, MEA had the fastest initial reaction rate. To improve the properties of AMP which have low initial reaction rate and high cost, AMP was used with MEA. The mixing ratio was also changed in constant total molarity of 1,2,3 and 4. The experimental results can be summarized as follows: (1) in solubility experiment, the addition of MEA in constant total polarity decreased the solubility of $CO_2$in AMP/MEA mixture. (2) from 0 to about 0.3 in mixing ratio, the solubility of $CO_2$in AMP/MEA mixture had little differences compared with the sum of solubility of AMP only and solubility of MEA only . (3) mixing ratio of 0.3 was found to be an optimal point with the fastest $CO_2$absorption rate.
