  • In the course of anthracite briquet combustion, air draft is usually controlled to continue burning of definite amount of briquet in the conventional hollow clay cylinder with air inlet hole open for given time, so that a large amount of CO tends to be produced. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an improved combustion process to depress the yielding rate of CO and for this purpose, we performed a basic experiment in which combustion rate of CO was measured in the mixture of $N_2, O_2 $and CO gas with or without the presence charcoal at the various temperature. The observed results showed that the burning temperature of CO is about 680${\sim}700^{\circ}C$, further burning rate of it was increased with increasing the amount of draft. From these facts, longer combustion time and low CO generation are thus contradictory to each other and it has been long desired to make those two compatible somehow. The purpose of the present investigation lies in designing an effective new briquet stove to meet the above requirements. The essential feature of the new briquet stove consisted in the use of two hollow iron cylinders with different inside diameter. A cylindrical air jacket thus formed served as a path through which small amount of secondary air run from the bottom of the stove to the upper vent holes. Heat exchange occurred between the upgoing secondary air and the burning briquet, which lowered the combustion temperature of the briquet. The results observed were selfevident as anticipated. It was confirmed that the combustion time was increased tolerably due to the heat loss from the combustion zone and that CO in the flue gas was reoxidized at the upper portion of the stove by the upgoing hot secondary air. By this reoxidation reaction the concentration of CO in the flue gas was found to be about 1/20 of that in case the conventional clay cylinder was used as briquet jacket.

  • A two-column six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from hydrogen and methane($60_{vol}%/40_{vol}%$) binary system onto activated carbon adsorbent. The effects of the feed gas pressure, the feed flowrate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached to after 15 cycles. $H_2$ purity increases according as the P/F ratio and pressure increase and the feed flow rate decreases; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 22 LPM feed flowrate, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75% recovery and 99% purity hydrogen. In this study was non-isothermal and non-adiabatic model considering linear driving force(LDF) model and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm considered to compare between prediction and experimental data.

  • Two nozzles with different size (Figure 2) were particularly designed to supply air through the swirl core into the central part of the liquid stream in the same parallel direction to produce a well-mixed air and water in the whirl chamber as spray liquid in bubble formation. Atomization was attempted to improve by using both the preliminary break-up process with less viscosity and less surface tension in the whirl chamber and the effects of increased frequency of the band of drops with the raised ambient air density in front of the nozzle orifice. The volumetric ratio between spray liquid and air on four levels was used to investigate the effects of air as a component of the mixture on atomization. The results of the experiment were summarized as follows; Droplet size became progressively finer as the operating pressure was increased in the range of $0.70kg/cm^2$ to $6.33kg/cm^2$, which was similar to the previous works. The new atomizing mechanism so-called 'air-center nozzle' gave a narrower range in droplet size distribution with smaller volumetric median diameter (VMD) than that of the existing spray system at a given pressure, which showed the possibility of improvement of atomization in a certain limit. The volumetric median diameter produced by the new atomizing mechanism was decreased from the central region toward the exterior edges across the spray pattern.

  • Wetland plants are an important component for wetland design and construction because they determine functions of wetlands through interactions with the abiotic environment such as wetland soil and hydrology as well as with other wetland organisms. In this study, germination experiments with soils from a natural wetland that contain seeds of wetland plants were conducted in wetland mesocosms to investigate the applicability of natural wetland soils for introducing and establishing wetland plants into constructed wetlands. Seven species were germinated in the experiment, with two new species that were not found in the field survey of wetland plants in the West Nakdong River area, Korea. The number of plant individuals germinated in submerged conditions (15 individuals) was much greater than that in waterlogged conditions (2 individuals). In experiments in which soils from a natural wetland and a wetland construction site were mixed at different ratios, the largest number of plant individuals was observed in the condition with 100% natural wetland soil. The highest growth was observed at 50% natural wetland soil for Hydrilla verticillata and 100% for Ceratophyllum demersum. These results suggest that 1:1 mixture of soils from natural wetland wetlands and wetland construction sites would provide an appropriate condition for secure establishment of submerged plants in constructed wetlands.

  • Cage plots were established in 2008 to find the relationship between combination of tended Japanese red pine sapling and the habitation of Monochamus alternatus, a vector for pine wood nematode. Japanese red pine sapling tended at different times were successively put into the cage, and then the adult of Monochamus alternatus was put in June. Presence or absence of the larva was determined November. Sapling tendings were done at seven successive times in 2009, mid- and late February and March, mid-April, May and June. Some saplings were also tended in mid-October of 2008, the previous year of this experiment. The larva was found in all the saplings tended later than mid-March in 2009. No larva was found in the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and those in February of 2009. In case of the combination the by-products of mid-February and late March of 2009 and mid-October of 2008, the larva was found in the by-product of mid-February and late March of 2009, but those in mid-October of 2008 was not. When the saplings tended in mid-October of 2008 and mid- and late February of 2009 were put into the cage singly, the larva was found in all the saplings. Results indicated the mixture of the saplings tended at different times affected the habitation of Monochamus alternatus differently.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of calcium hydroxide on dentin bonding strength of various dentin bonding systems as a function of time in composite resin restoration. Dentin adhesives used in this study were Scotchbond Multipurpose, Single Bond, SE Bond and Prompt L-Pop. Flat dentin surfaces adjacent to pulp chamber were created, then $Ca(OH)_2$ and saline were mixed and applied on dentin surface of experimental group, then IRM was used to cover the mixture on dentin surface and the specimens were stored at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for experiment period (7 days, 30 days). After removing IRM and $Ca(OH)_2$, each dentin adhesives were treated on dentin surfaces. Composite resin (Z-250, 3M) was placed with S mm height and was light-cured for 20 seconds. After stored in distilled water for 24 hours, each dentin-composite bonded spicemen was embedded in epoxy resin and sectioned into $1.0\times1.0mm^2$ cross section composite-dentin beams. Specimen was mounted on zig of Universal testing machine and ${\mu}TBS$ test was performed. SEM analysis was performed to examine the fractured surfaces. The results suggested that applying calcium hydroxide did not show significant difference in dentin bonding strength.

  • Background: Nefopam, a non-opiate analgesic, has been regarded as a substance that reduces the requirement for morphine, but conflicting results have also been reported. The inhibition of monoamine reuptake is a mechanism of action for the analgesia of nefopam. The spinal cord is an important site for the action of monoamines however, the antinociceptive effect of intrathecal nefopam was not clear. This study was performed to examine the antinociceptive effect of intrathecal (i.t.) nefopam and the pattern of pharmacologic interaction with i.t. morphine in the formalin test. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with an i.t. catheter, and were randomly treated with a vehicle, nefopam, or morphine. Formalin was injected into the hind-paw 10 min. after an i.t. injection of the above experiment drugs. After obtaining antinociceptive $ED_{50}$ of nefopam and morphine, the mixture of nefopam and morphine was tested for the antinociceptive effect in the formalin test at a dose of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 of $ED_{50}$, or $ED_{50}$ of each drug followed by an isobolographic analysis. Results: Intrathecal nefopam significantly reduced the flinching responses in both phases of the formalin test in a dose-dependent manner. Its effect, however, peaked at a dose of $30{\mu}g$ in phase 1 (39.8% of control) and $10{\mu}g$ during phase 2 (37.6% of control). The isobolograhic analysis indicated an additive interaction of nefopam and morphine during phase 2, and a synergy effect in antinociception during phase 1. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that i.t. nefopam produces an antinociceptive effect in formalin induced pain behavior during both phases of the formalin test, while interacting differently with i.t. morphine, synergistically during phase 1, and additively during phase 2.

  • This experiment was performed to study the morphological responses of the pigment epithelial cell and the Bruch's membrane of the retina of rat following X-ray irradiation. Male rats were divided into normal and experimental groups. The heads of the rats, under sodium thiopental anesthesia, were exposed to 3,000 rads or 6,000 rads of radiation in a single dose, respectively. The source was a Mitsubishi Linear Accelerator ML-4MV. The target to skin distance was 80cm, and the. dose rate was 200 rads/min. The experimental groups were sacrificed on the 6th hour, 2nd and 6th day after X-ray irradiation. Under anesthesia, 1% glutaraldehyde-1% paraformaldehyde solution(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH 7.3) was perfused through the left ventricle and ascending aorta. Pieces of the tissue taken from the posterior region of the retina were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde-1.5% paraformaldehyde(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH 7.3) and 1% osmium tetroxide(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH7.3), and embedded in araldite mixture. The ultrathin sections contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead citrate were observed with JEM 100 CX-II electron microscope. The results were as follow; 1. The morphological changes of the pigment epithelial cells were not pronounced after exposure to 3,000 rads of X-ray. But on the 6th hour after exposure to 6,000 rads of X-ray, bulging nuclear membrane protruding into the cytoplasm and nuclear chromatin clumped into numerous masses along the nuclear membrane were observed. At the 2nd and 6th day post-irradiation, partial cytolysis or necrosis were seen. 2. The thickness of the Bruch's membrane of the experimental groups were increased in the time and dose range covered by this study, and splitting or diffusing basal laminae of the choriocapillary layer were observed frequently in the experimental group. Above results suggest that large amount(6,000 rads) of head irradiation induce direct hazardous effects on the pigment epitherial cells and Bruch's membrane of the retina of the rat, but pigment epithelial cells are more radioresistant than Bruch's membrane.

  • Very-early strength latex-modified concrete (VES-LMC) was developed for the purpose of fast-track overlay of a concrete bridge deck under heavy traffic, concentrated on the workability, durability, and strength gain so that it can be opened to the traffic only three hours after its placement. The mixture of VES-LMC might accompany very high heat of hydration at early-age because of its inherent rapid hardening property and could have susceptibility to autogenous shrinkage because of its relatively low water-cement ratio. This study evaluated the effect of the latex-cement ratio(L/C) both of the constant and variable slumps on the autogenous shrinkage of VES-LMC by carrying out simple temperature rise test and early-age shrinkage experiment. Test results are as follows: The latex contributes on the enhancement of the concrete durability but has little effect on its hydration and the accompanied heat of hydration in VES-LMC. Autogenous shrinkage increased with the increase in latex-cement ratio at variable slumps and its pattern followed regularly a logarithmic increase. However, the influence of water-cement ratio and latex-cement ratios for the test specimens at constant slump on early-age autogenous shrinkage property was found to be minor due to the simultaneous effect of the two experimental variables.

  • To investigate the formation of the chromophoric structures taking place during the alkaline pulping vanillyl alcohol [${\alpha}-^{13}C$] guaiacylglycerol-${\beta}$-aryl ether [${\alpha}-^{13}C$ or ${\gamma}-^{13}C$] and phenylcoumarn [${\alpha}-^{13}C$] units as model lignins were treated with 1N sodium hydroxide at 165$^{\circ}C$ for 1.5-3 hours. From the chemical structures of the isolated products and $^{13}C$-NMR Spectra of the reaction mixtures, the main conclusion is as follows; 1) Condensation products of II-1-5 were identified from the reaction mixture of vanillyl alcohol treated with alkali and theses compounds afforded the quinonmethide structure(Fig. 3-7) by air oxidation. 2) Treatment of guaiacylglycerol-${\beta}$-aryl ether unit gave ${\varphi}$-aryl-${\beta}$-aroxy quinone structures (IV-15, IV-16), diguaiacyl-1, 4-penta-diene ${\beta}$, ${\beta}$'-diaroxyl distyrene methane unit, ${\beta}$-aroxy distyrene methane. These distyrene methanes of the compounds are transformed by air oxidation into the corresponding o-quinonemethide units (V-8, V-9). 3) On the treatment of phenylcoumaran, the stilbene derivative was formed in quantitative yield and dimerized(VI-11) in preference to oxidation to the corresponding extended quinone structures. The chromophoric structures taken place during the alkaline treatment of the model lignins are thought to be some important types in alkaline pulping on the basis of the reaction mechanism in this experiment.
