Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) prepared by emulsion polymerization has broad applications for additives such as paint binder, adhesive for wood and paper due to its low glass transition temperature which help to plasticize substrate resins. Since emulsion polymerization has a disadvantage that surfactant and ionic initiator degrade properties of the product polymer, poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) (VVc-BA) was synthesized using potassium persulfate as catalyst and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as protective colloid to prevent the degradation. The copolymer latex product was internally plasticized and has enhanced colloid stability, adhesion, tensile strength and elongation. During VAc-BA emulsion polymerization, no coagulation and complete conversion occur with the reactant mixture of 0.7wt% potassium persulfate, 15wt% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-217), and the balanced monomer that the weight ratio of vinyl acetate to butyl acrylate is 19. As the concentrations of PVA increase, the copolymerization becomes faster and polymer particles are more stable, resulting in enhanced mechanical stability of the VAc-BA copolymer. However, the size of the polymer particles decreases with increasing PVA contents. Properties of the VAc-BA copolymer, such as minimum film formation temperature, glass transition temperature, surface morphology, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, tensile strength and elongation, were characterized using differential scanning calorimeter, transmission electron microscope and other instruments.

As a preliminary study on the spray behavior characteristics of emulsified fuel, the fuel properties (viscosity, surface tension, and density) and evaporation characteristics of a fuel droplet were investigated. The emulsified fuel was made by mixing diesel and $H_2O_2$. In addition, the macroscopic spray behavior characteristics such as the spray penetrations and spray angles of the emulsified and diesel fuels were compared. The stirring condition of the emulsified fuel was a 9:1 mixture of the diesel fuel and the surfactant span 80. The mixing ratios for the hydrogen peroxide were set at EF2, EF12, EF22, EF32, EF42, EF52, EF62, EF72, EF82, and EF92. The injection pressures were set at 400, 600, 800, and 1000 bar. We found that as the mixing ratio of the hydrogen peroxide was increased from EF2 to EF52, the viscosity of the emulsified fuel increased. However, afterward, the viscosity of the emulsified fuel gradually decreased and approached the viscosity value of the diesel fuel. Therefore, generally oil-in-water emulsions were used for the hydrogen peroxide mixing ratios up to 52 (EF52), and water-in-oil emulsions were used for the hydrogen peroxide mixing ratios above 52. Finally, the spray behavior characteristics (spray penetration and spray angle) of the emulsified fuel were found to be almost independent of the mixing ratio.
Smoke from fire is a mixture of combustion gases and particles which include micro-droplets formed from condensed organic vapors and carbonaceous agglomerates. The inhalation of smoke particles causes adverse health effects, and it is prerequisite for the hazard and risk analysis of the smoke particles to know how they behaviour in the respiratory tract. The characteristics of the absorption and adsorption of toxic gases and the amount and location of the particle deposition within the respiratory tract that determine the adverse health effects are related to the morphology and the size distribution of smoke particles. In the present work, as a preliminary study for the adverse health effects of smoke particles, the morphologies of the smoke particles from combustible materials were investigated for each fire stage: smouldering, well-ventilated flaming, small under-ventilated flaming, fully-developed under-ventilated fire. The steady-state tube furnace method given in ISO/TS 19700 was used for the generation of smoke particles. The fire stages were controlled by changing furnace temperature and equivalent ratio. The morphologies were analyzed by using Transmission Electron Microscope (Bio-TEM) by collecting the particles on TEM grids put on each stage of a cascade impactor.
A rapid and sensitive reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the determination of N-(-4-Chlorophenyl)-6-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-chromanecarboxamide (KAL-1120), a novel anti-inflammation agent, in the rat plasma. The method was applied to analyze the compound in the biological fluids such as bile, urine and tissue homogenates. After liquid-liquid extraction, the compound was analyzed on an HPLC system with ultraviolet detection at 275 nm. HPLC was carried out using reversed-phase isocratic elution with a $C_{18}$ column, a mobile phase of a mixture of acetonitril (40 v/v%) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The chromatograms showed good resolution and sensitivity and no interference of plasma. The calibration curve for the drug in plasma was linear over the concentration range of 0.05-50 ${\mu}g$/mL. The intra- and inter-day assay accuracies of this method ranged from 0.06% to 9.33% of normal values and the precision did not exceed 6.28% of relative standard deviation. The plasma concentration of KAL-1120 decreased to below the quantifiable limit at 1.5 hr after the i.v. bolus administration of 2-10 mg/kg to rats ($t_{1/2,({\alpha})}$ and $t_{1/2,({\beta})$ of 2.15 and 26.7 min at a dose of 2 mg/kg, 3.91 and 33.0 min at a dose of 10 mg/kg, respectively). The steady-state volume of distribution ($V_{dss}$) and the total body clearance ($CL_t$) were not significantly altered in rats given doses from 2 to 10 mg/kg. Of the various tissues tested, KAL-1120 was mainly distributed in the lung and heart after i.v. bolus administration. KAL-1120 was detected in the bile by 30 min after its i.v. bolus administration. However, the concentration in the urine after i.v. bolus administration became too low to measure, suggesting that KAL-1120 is mostly excreted in the bile. In conclusion, this analytical method was suitable for the preclinical pharmacokinetic studies of KAL-1120 in rats.
To study the stabilization characteristics of diffusion flame formed in the wake of a cylindrical bluff body with fuel injection, the flame stability limits, length and temperature of recirculation zone of flame, turbulence intensity distribution near the recirculation zone of flame were measured and analyzed. The length of recirculation zone is independent on main fuel injection quantity, but it is dependent on fuel injection angles, air stream velocity, and auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone. For diffusion flame, in general, the flame stabilization is deteriorated with increase of he length of recirculation zone, but if the turbulence generator is installed, the flame stabilization is improved with increase of the length of recirculation zone. The temperature of recirculation zone is dependent on fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators, and it dependent on fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators, and it has a maximum value at the condition of each theoretical mixture. In general, the more temperature of recirculation zone is low, the more flame is stable. But when the turbulence generator is installed, the more temperature of recirculation zone is low, the more flame is unstable. The turbulence intensity in the wake of bluff body is increased with increase of diameter or blockage ratio of grid. The more turbulence intensity is increased by installation of turbulence generator, the more flame is unstable. Finally, It is clear that the stabilization characteristics of diffuser flame can be controlled by some parameters such as fuel injection angles, auxiliary fuel injection into recirculation zone, turbulence generators.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the phototoxic effects of blue light exposure on periodontal pathogens in both planktonic and biofilm cultures. Methods: Strains of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, in planktonic or biofilm states, were exposed to visible light at wavelengths of 400.520 nm. A quartz-tungsten-halogen lamp at a power density of $500mW/cm^2$ was used for the light source. Each sample was exposed to 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 seconds of each bacterial strain in the planktonic or biofilm state. Confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) was used to observe the distribution of live/dead bacterial cells in biofilms. After light exposure, the bacterial killing rates were calculated from colony forming unit (CFU) counts. Results: CLSM images that were obtained from biofilms showed a mixture of dead and live bacterial cells extending to a depth of $30-45{\mu}m$. Obvious differences in the live-to-dead bacterial cell ratio were found in P. gingivalis biofilm according to light exposure time. In the planktonic state, almost all bacteria were killed with 60 seconds of light exposure to F. nucleatum (99.1%) and with 15 seconds to P. gingivalis (100%). In the biofilm state, however, only the CFU of P. gingivalis demonstrated a decreasing tendency with increasing light exposure time, and there was a lower efficacy of phototoxicity to P. gingivalis as biofilm than in the planktonic state. Conclusions: Blue light exposure using a dental halogen curing unit is effective in reducing periodontal pathogens in the planktonic state. It is recommended that an adjunctive exogenous photosensitizer be used and that pathogens be exposed to visible light for clinical antimicrobial periodontal therapy.
In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride ($SOCl_2$) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxyl groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) to make MWCNT-MPTMS. The MWCNT-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA composite particles with 3 kinds of emulsifiers, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) as a cationic, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an anionic and polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) as a nonionic emulsifier. Morphologies of composite emulsions were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphologies of emulsion polymerized MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA with SDBS showed more uniform particle size distribution compared to those of other two emulsifiers used emulsions. MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA showed $3.4^{\circ}C$ higher $T_g$ compared to pristine MWCNT/PMMA due to covalent bond formation at interface of MWCNT-MPTMS and PMMA.
Background: The common causes of lower back pain with or without leg pain includes disk disease and spinal stenosis. A definitive diagnosis is usually made by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but treatment is often difficult because the MRI findings are not consistent with the symptoms of the patient in many cases. The objective of this study was to observe the correlation between the patterns of epidurography performed in patients having lower back pain with or without leg pain and the position or severity of the pain as subjectively described by the patients. Methods: The subjects of this study were 69 outpatients with lower back pain with or without leg pain who visited our clinic and complained of predominant pain on one side. We performed caudal epidural block using an image intensifier. A mixture of the therapeutic drug and the contrast agent (10 ml) was injected to observe the contrast flow pattern. The patients who complained of predominant pain on one side were divided into the left side group and the right side group. A judgment of inconsistency was made if the contrast agent flowed to the side of the pain, while a judgment of consistency was made if the contrast agent flowed to the opposite side of the pain. The degree of the drug distribution was evaluated by counting the number of cells to which the contrast agent's flowed for evaluating the correlation between the contrasted cell and the severity of pain (one group ${\leq}$ VAS 7, the other group ${\geq}$ VAS 8) the degree of the contrast agent's contrast was evaluated by dividing and counting an image into 15 cells (the left, right, and middle sections at each level of L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3). Results: Thirty out of the 69 patients who had laterality in pain, that is, those who complained of predominant pain on one side, showed that the laterality of the pain and the contrast agent flow was consistent, while 39 patients showed that the laterality was inconsistent (P: 0.137). The evaluation of the correlation between the pain and the contrast agent flow showed that the mean number of contrasted cells was $9.0{\pm}2.2$ for the 46 patients in the group with a VAS of 7 or lower and $6.5{\pm}2.0$ for the 23 patients in the group with a VAS of 8 or higher, indicating that the former group showed a significantly greater number of contrasted cells (P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study, conducted with patients having lower back pain with or without leg pain, showed that the contrast flow pattern of caudal epidurography had a significant correlation with the severity of the pain but not with the laterality of the pain.
To investigate sedimentary facies and environmental changes of the Nakdong River Estuary and its adjacent coastal area, the grain size analysis and measurement of organic matter, calcium carbonate, clay mineral and metallic elements were carried out for forty surface sediment samples. Based on regional distribution pattern and characteristics of the surface sediments, sedimentary facies in the study area can be divided into sand facies (TYPE I), mud facies (TYPE II) and sand-mud mixed facies (TYPE III). TYPE III is the transition of TYPE I and TYPE II in every aspects of sediment characteristics. It suggests that TYPE III may have been formed by the mixture of two different source of sediment : one derived from Nakdong River and the other resuspended fine-grained sediments from the Jinhae Bay by winnowing action during floods or storms. Among many aspects of environmental change after the construction of the Nakdong Barrage, the most significant is the increase of sand content off the sand barrier region. It could be explained by several reasons including decreased input of fine-grained sediment from river, increased hydrodynamic energy level off the sand barrier region and artificial effects such as dredging and dumping.
Two nozzles with different size (Figure 2) were particularly designed to supply air through the swirl core into the central part of the liquid stream in the same parallel direction to produce a well-mixed air and water in the whirl chamber as spray liquid in bubble formation. Atomization was attempted to improve by using both the preliminary break-up process with less viscosity and less surface tension in the whirl chamber and the effects of increased frequency of the band of drops with the raised ambient air density in front of the nozzle orifice. The volumetric ratio between spray liquid and air on four levels was used to investigate the effects of air as a component of the mixture on atomization. The results of the experiment were summarized as follows; Droplet size became progressively finer as the operating pressure was increased in the range of $0.70kg/cm^2$ to $6.33kg/cm^2$, which was similar to the previous works. The new atomizing mechanism so-called 'air-center nozzle' gave a narrower range in droplet size distribution with smaller volumetric median diameter (VMD) than that of the existing spray system at a given pressure, which showed the possibility of improvement of atomization in a certain limit. The volumetric median diameter produced by the new atomizing mechanism was decreased from the central region toward the exterior edges across the spray pattern.
