  • We have developed a cylindrical mixing layer model of a stellar jet including cooling effect in order to understand an optical emission mechanism along collimated high velocity stellar jets associated with young stellar objects. The cylindrical results have been calculated to be the same as the 2D ones presented by Canto & Raga(1991) because the entrainment efficiency in our cylindrical model has been obtained to be the same value as the 2D model has given. We have discussed the morphological and physical characteristics of the mixing layers by the cooling effect. As the jet Mach number increases, the initial temperature of the mixing layer goes high because the kinetic energy of the jet partly converts to the thermal energy of the mixing layer. The initial cooling of the mixing layer is very severe, changing its outer boundary radius. A subsequent change becomes adiabatic. The number of the Mach disks in the stellar jet and the total radiative luminosity of the mixing layer, based on our cylindrical calculation, have quite agreed with the observations.

  • The quality of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional micro channel flow has been numerically studied using Fractional-step method (FSM) and particle tracking techniques such as $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ section and Lyapunov exponents. The flow was driven by pressure distribution and the chaotic mixing was generated by applying alternating current to electrodes embedded on the bottom wall at a first half period and on the top wall at a second half period. The equations governing the velocity and concentration distributions were solved using FSM based on Finite Volume approach. Results showed that the mixing quality depended significantly on the modulation period. The modulation period for the best mixing performance was determined based on the mixing index for various initial conditions of concentration distribution. The optimal values of modulation period obtained by the particle tracking techniques were compared with those from the solution of concentration distribution equation using FSM and CFX software and the comparison showed their good match.

  • Thermal mixing phenomena in a Y-type microchannel were investigated using a micro-PIV. Two inlet reservoirs of the microchannel were controlled individually so that the characteristics of thermal mixing in the channel with temperature difference were compared with those without the difference. The velocity field in the mixing process was measured using the micro-PIV system that includes an ICCD (Intensified CCD) camera. The mixing area and uniformity were also analyzed. It is observed that the flow fluctuation in spanwise direction is induced by temperature difference, which enhances mixing process in microchannels.

  • In this study, the confined laminar flow around a square cylinder, which ejects a either on the front face or on the rear face, is numerically simulated. In each case, three ratios of jet velocity to the fixed upstream velocity are considered. In all cases of the rear fuel jet, the high mass-fraction region is formed along the streamlines from the jet exit. In case of front jet, drag is significantly decreased when the jet velocity ratio is greater than 1. The results obtained exhibit flow and scalar-mixing characteristics encountered in a planar combustor

  • The mixing vanes attached to the spacer grid of rod bundles are used to improve the heat transfer in heat exchanger devices by controlling the characteristics of the flow structures and turbulence. In this study, velocity patterns induced by two types of mixing vane(split and swirl vane) are measured by the PIV technique to better understand how to effect on the cross and secondary vortex flow patterns in $5{\times}$ rod bundle simulating the fuel assembly of the nuclear reactor. A successful measurement of the lateral velocity patterns was conducted using a specially designed beam sheet generator and experimental loop at KAERI. As the result, we found that for the cross flow between subchannels, the split vane is more effective than the swirl vane, while for the secondary vortex flow in each subchannel, the swirl vane's one is larger and longer than split vane's one.

  • Because the mixing efficiency is influenced remarkably by varying the geometrical configurations, the study of flow characteristics inside the mechanical agitator is very important to improve the performances. The draught tube in the agitator makes intermixing between the screw and tube by interrupting radial flow, and it makes circulation region in a mixing chamber. In general, the helical screw agitator with a draught tube (HSA) is proved more efficient to mix than the others. Consequently, such as the shapes of helical screw, number of pitches and the variation of angular velocity are the main parameters for improving the capacity of HSA. And also the suspension of the solid particles in the agitator can be determined these parameters. The rate of solids suspension in the mixing chamber was quantified with a statistical average value, of. Numerical analyses were carried out, using a commercial CFD code, Fluent, to obtain the velocity, pressure and particle distributions under steady, laminar flow and no-slip conditions. Results are graphically depicted with various parameters.

  • Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.

  • An experimental study has performed to identify the mixing characteristics of basket mill by using PIV and LIF techniques. The velocity fields were measured at three sectors for each two types of basket mill model and various impeller speed. To verify the results of velocity field measurement and the concentration field, LIF measurement also was performed for three cases. There was an inactive region and a descending flow to the bottom of basket mill at the original model. But when the impeller type and the guide shape were changed, internal flow structure was improved suitably for mixing and dispersion. The improvement result in increment of inflow flow rate at the basket entrance about $10\%$.

  • The objective of this paper was to investigate the mixing characteristics of an three-stage inline coagulant mixing system experimentally. Wastewater samples of pH 8.5 and initial turbidity 1,000NTU were taken from a site of tunneling work. At the constant dosage, 0.36mL/L, of polymer as coagulant aids, the coagulation efficiency with the dosage of PAC as coagulant was about 4${\sim}$6% at 10 minutes after sampling. In the case of 2 different velocity gradient conditions, the efficiency of turbidity removal was increased about 6.5${\sim}$8% with increasing the dosage of coagulant while, the efficiency was increased about 20${\sim}$21.5% with increasing the dosage of coagulant aids. The efficiency of turbidity removal with the settling time after sampling was about 90% after 1 minute, and the efficiency was about 95% after 5 minutes.

  • Mixers are used in several industrial applications where it is necessary to strongly mix reactants in a short period of time (eg. reaction injection molding, ceramics manufacturing, crystallization). However, despite their widespread use, mixing flow characteristics in these systems have not been rigorously investigated. Influence of blade shapes on the mixing time and the power consumption per unit volume in two kinds of impeller including the mixing effects are studied by PIV experiment. A series of the experiments were carried out to achieve a better mixing effect in simple baffle arrangement and tall vessel with modified impellers(two kinds of blades : pitched blade turbine and rushton turbine). Results show that periodic vortex from the mixing layer is predominant and related unsteady flow characteristics prevail over the entire region.
