  • Korea, which has a high dependency on energy imports, is greatly affected by fluctuations in international oil prices. In order to offset these effects, various policies such as 'diversification of energy sources' and 'energy mix' are being pursued. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is a policy promoted for this purpose, and a compulsory mixing system is applied only to the diesel. In order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in various countries, they are concentrating on the dissemination of bio-alcohol as well as bio-diesel, and commercialization through various verification. In this study, evaluation of domestic materials and vehicles was carried out to promote domestic bio alcohol fuel. We analyzed the fuel characteristics of domestic quality standard items by mixing them with gasoline of automobile at a certain mixing ratio (0%, 3%, 6%, and 10%).

  • In this study, the exhaust characteristics of the diesel engine for the change of the mixing ratio of biodiesel fuel were quantitatively analyzed by using the numerical analysis method. As the fuel used in the experiment, the diesel and biodiesel(waste oil, soybean oil), the mixed fuel BD2(Diesel only), BD3, BD5, BD20, BD50 and BD100 were used. The injection pressure($p_{inj}$) was set to 400bar, 600bar, 800bar, 1000bar and 1200bar as the experimental variable. Also the concept of the standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient based on the statistics was introduced in order to analyze the exhaust characteristics of the quantitative NOx and Soot according to the injection pressure and the mixing ratio variation of biodiesel blending fuel. It is considered that as a result of studies, for the waste oil, NOx and Soot can be simultaneously reduced through control of the mixing ratio at the regions of $p_{inj}=400bar$ and $p_{inj}=600bar$, and the Soot can be reduced without affecting on the emission of NOx at more than $p_{inj}=800bar$. For the soybean oil, NOx and Soot can be simultaneously reduced at $p_{inj}=400bar$ and the Soot can be reduced without affecting on the emission of NOx at $p_{inj}=600bar$.

  • CFD analysis has been conducted to find the two stage impeller configuration which is the most suitable for a stirred tank with an internal helical cooling coil and a cooling jacket, which is frequently used in chemical industries for highly exothermic reactions ranged from low to medium viscosity. Two typical types of impellers are considered; pitched paddle impellers and Rushton turbine impellers. Interestingly, pitched paddle impellers show a good mixing performance for multi-species, whereas Rushton turbine impellers achieve a good mixing performance for multi-phases. Besides the type of an impeller, the location of an impeller is another important factor to be considered in order to accomplish an effective mixing. The best set of types and locations of two impellers is recommended based on the coefficient of variation(CoV) value and the heat removal capability obtained from CFD results. The former is a measure to quantify the degree of mixing.

  • Recently, an excavated soil-recycling machine has been receiving considerable attentions. The mobile type excavated soil-recycling machine is able to improve the soils by adding the additives such as slaked lime and cement at the construction site. However, not only the mechanical factors such as paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle but also the physical properties of the excavated soils affect the mixing performance of the excavated soils and additives. In this sense, experimental investigations are uneconomical and ineffective. This paper concerns with the numerical simulator to analyze the mixing behavior of excavated soils and additives in the soil-recycling machine with dual shafts in order to assist the economical and effective design of the optimum soil-recycling machine. By using the simulator, several simulations were carried out, and the effects of some mechanical parameters such as the paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle on the mixing performance were made clear.

  • There is increasing evidence that the convective mixing length (α) in stellar evolution models depends on metallicity of stars. In order to confirm a more precise metallicity-dependent mixing length trend, we investigate the effective temperature and metallicity of 14 red supergiant stars (RSGs) in the irregular dwarf galaxy IC 1613 using the near-infrared spectra observed with the MMIRS on the MMT telescope. From the synthetic spectral fitting to the observed spectra, we find that the mean metallicity is about [Fe/H]=0.69 with a weak bimodal distribution. We also find that the effective temperature of RSGs in IC 1613 is higher by about 250 K than that of the SMC on average. We compare the RSG position with stellar evolutionary tracks on the HR diagram, finding that models with α = 2.2-2.4 H_p can best reproduce the effective temperatures of the RSGs in IC 1613. It is evident that the mixing length values for IC 1613 is lower than that of the Milky Way. This result supports our previous study on a metallicity-dependent mixing length: mixing length decreases with decreasing metallicity of host galaxies. However, this dependency becomes relatively weak for RSGs having a metallicity equal to or less than the SMC metallicity.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized dump combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the various fuel-air mixing section geometry on the combustion instability characteristics. The multi-channel dynamic pressure transducers were located on the combustor and inlet mixing section region to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference phase at each dynamic pressure measurement results. Dynamic pressures were also measured to investigate characteristics of combustion at the same time. The combustor and mixing section length was varied in order to have different acoustic resonance characteristics from 800 to 1800 mm in combustor and 470, 550, 870 mm in mixing section. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of coupled with the combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

  • In order to investigate the effect of fuel mixing on PAH and soot formation, four species of methane, ethane, propane and propene have been mixed in counterlfow ethylene diffusion flame. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Results showed that the mixing of ethane (or propane) in ethylene diffusion flame produces more PAHs and soot than those of propene, even though the propene diffusion flame produces more PAHs and soot than that of propane and ethane. Considering that propene directly dehydrogenates to propargyl radical, this behavior implied that the enhancement of PAH and soot formation by the fuel mixing of ethylene and ethane (or propane) cannot be explained by propargyl radical directly dehydrogenated from ethane (or propane).

  • This study has been performed to investigate the physical and mechanical characteristics of compaction, volume change and compressive strength for reinforced soil mixed with cement. And confirm the reinforcing effects with admixture such as cement. To this end, a series of compaction test and compression test was conducted for clayey soil(CL) and cement reinforced soil. In order to determine proper moisture content and mixing ratio, pilot test was carried out for soil and cement reinforced soil. And the mixing ratio of cement admixture was fixed 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% by the weight of dry soil. As the experimental results, the maximum dry unit weight(${\gamma}_{dmax}$) was increased with the mixing ratio and then shown the peak at 10% reinforced soil, but the optimum moisture content(OMC) and the volume change was decreased with the ratio increase. And the compressive strength volume change was decreased with mixing ratio increased.

  • Tri-cresyl phosphate(TCP) was synthesized by reaction of phosphorus chloride with mixed cresol(mixture of m-cresol, p-cresol, and others) in the presence of $AlCl_3$. Some of unwanted products and unreactants colored TCP. In order to separate TCP from these, vaccume distillation was carried twice, but colorless TCP could not be producted. Separation of unwanted materials by 2% NaOH solution was introduced before first and second distillation and optimal separation conditions such as NaOH concentration, mixing volume ratio, mixing time, and rpm were investigated for new batch separation and production of colorless TCP Optimal conditions were 2% NaOH solution, 35% mixing volume ratio of 2% NaOH solution, 1.5 hours of mixing time, and 20 rpm.

  • The present study investigates the combustion phenomena in a sludge incinerator using experimental and numerical method. The temperature and gas concentration were measured at 33 points during operation of the incinerator in order to assess the mixing and combustion characteristics. Numerical simulation was also carried out using a commercial CFD code. Simplified inlet conditions were introduced in oder to predict the bulk solid combustion and the diffusion of the volatile matter released by pyrolysis of sludge. The experimental results showed that the combustion process is extremely inhomogeneous. Large variations were observed in the temperature and gas concentrations in the freeboard of the incinerator due to poor mixing performance between the air and the combustibles, which is caused by massive and bulk generation of volatile matter by fast pyrolysis of sludge particles. The boundary condition of the CFD simulation was found effective in predicting the poor mixing and combustion performance of the reactor.
