  • The air velocity flowing in inner combustion chamber of Scramjet is supersonic and the time of its stay is very short as a few milliseconds. Within this short time, fuel injection, air-fuel mixing, and combustion process should be accomplished. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for enhancement of mixing. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. 8 different sized cavities of length-height ratio were used in order to recognize the effect about cavity size. Also, the case without cavity was analyzed to find the effect of cavity. Used code compared with the result of experiment under identical conditions and it was verified. Through this comparison and verification, mixing enhancement by cavity could be confirmed.

  • In this study, we calculated arc discharges and flow characteristics driven by arcs in a thermal puffer chamber, which is one of most outstanding high-voltage interrupters, for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE ablation, Cu evaporation, and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during the whole arcing history because the plasma flow is affected by high heat energy and mass momentum. Two turbulence models, the Prandtl's mixing length model and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with pressure-rise inside chamber and arc voltage between the contacts as well as flow characteristics near current zero.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, subscale thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two different configurations of injectors have been tested for the understanding of the effects of recess length on high pressure combustion. Clearly, the recess length drastically affects the combustion efficiency and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in an injector with recess number of two increases a combustion efficiency and reveals sound combustion although a pressure drop required for the same amount of mass flow rates increases compared with an injector of recess number of one.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principle design parameters, a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.

  • As a fundamental study to apply high pressure injection system to direct injection diesel engine, fuel injection system and constant volume combustion chamber were made and the behaviors of evaporating spray with the variation of injection pressure and the ambient gas temperature were observed by using high speed camera, and the combusion characteristics with the variation of injection pressure and A/F ratio were analyzed. As injection pressure increases, spray tip penetration and spray angle increase and, as a results spray volume increases. This helps an uniform mixing of fuel and air. Spray liquid core length decreases as ambient gas temperature increases, while it decreases as injection pressure increases but the effect of ambient gas temperature is dorminant. As injection pressure increases, ignition delay is shortened and combustion rate being raised, maximum heat release rate increases. It become clear that High injection pressure has high level of potential to improve the performance of DI-diesel engine.

  • LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and significantly improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR(Turbulence Ring) brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution into turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of shape and intrusion length of TR did not greatly affect the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing was not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.

  • Experimental studies on determination of the supply leading time of propellants to combustion chamber have been made to stably and efficiently guarantee the ignition process with liquid rocket engine. The propellant used is a Jet A-1 as fuel and a liquid oxygen as oxidizer. Unlike impinging FOOF type of injectors are arranged radially and the designed O/F ratio is 2.34. The present experiment program also includes the stability on the quadlet type of ignitor using the triethylalumimum as an ignition source and injector life tests. Experimental results clarifies that the propellant supply through LOx leading to combustion chamber is proper for stable ignition and combustion processes based on the fuel and oxidizer manifold pressures, combustion chamber pressure, and the variation of flame length from the nozzle exit with lapse time, and shows that the leading supply time of propellants affects the engine performance little. The effect of positioning cooling holes is remarkable to protect the injector face.

  • Based on the viscous flow characteristics of gas through capillary tube, a simple and cheap gas mixing system was developed for controlling gas compositions in CA chambers. The gas flow rate through capillary tube had a linear relationship with pressure, (length)$^{-1}$ and (radius)$^4$ of capillary tube, which agreed well with Hagen-Poiseuille’s law. The relationship between flow rate and combined parameters was described as Q=0.000209724($\pi$ r$^4$P/$\mu$L) and the coefficient of determination was 0.9984. The developed system could control gas concentrations in CA chambers within $\pm$0.3% deviation compared to the preset concentrations. It was possible to predict the required time and required gas flow rate for exchanging the gs in CA chamber to a certain concentration of gas by using the mathematical model developed in this study.

  • This paper describes the results of cold flow test and hot firing tests of an uni-element coaxial swirl injector and hot firing tests of a subscale combustor, as to the development effort of coaxial swirl injector for high performance liquid rocket engine combustor. A major design parameter for coaxial swirl injector is the recess number of a bi-swirl injector. The results of hot firing tests of the uni-element injector combustor and the sub-scale combustor are analyzed to investigate the effect of the recess number influencing on the combustion performance and pressure fluctuation. The test results of a cold flow test of the unielement combustor shows that it was shown that the change in recess number has significant effect on mixing characteristics and efficiency, while the effect of recess number on atomization characteristic is not The results of a series of firing tests using unielement and subscale combustor show that the recess length significantly affects the hydraulic characteristics, the combustion efficiency, and the dynamics of the liquid oxygen/kerosene bi-swirl injector. As a point of combustion performance, combustion efficiencies are 90% for unielement combustor and 95% for subscale combustor. The difference in the characteristic velocities between the unielement combustor and the subscale combustor may be caused by the difference in thermal loss to the combustor wall and the relative lengths of the combustion chamber. For a mixed type coaxial swirl combustor, the pressure drop across the injector increases as recess number becomes larger. The low frequency pressure fluctuation observed in unielement combustor can be related to the propellant mixing characteristics of the coaxial bi-swirl injector. The effect of the recess number on the pressure fluctuation inside the combustion chamber is more significant in un i-element combustor than the subscale combustor, of which the phenomena are also observed in time domain and frequency domain.
