  • We demonstrate a widely-tunable wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor-fiber ring laser with no external pump light. Applying 10 GHz short pulses at -8 dBm as a probe signal, we achieve continuous wavelength tuning over the semiconductor optical amplifier gain-bandwidth reaching 30 nm down- and 17 m up-wavelength conversion. In addition to the wide tuning capability, the converter shows high-speed conversion and low saturation power capabilities.

  • A rational management of water resources in estuary reservoirs necessiates the prediction of water quality. In this study, a multiple box model for the water quality prediction was developed as a tool for the purpose of examining an adequate way to improve and maintain the water quality. Some submodels that are suitable for simulating the mixing behavior of pollutant materials in a lake were considered in this model. The model was appiled for predicting water qualities of Haenam Esturay Reservoir. The result from this study can be summarized as follows : 1.A water quality simulation model that can predict the 10-day mean value of water qualities was developed by adding some submodels that simulate the concentrations of chlorophyll-a, BOD, T-P and T-N to the existing Multiple Box Model representing the mixing and circulating of materials by the hydarulic action. 2.As input data for the model developed, the climatic data including precipitation, solar radiation, temperature, cloudness, wind speed and relative humidity, and the water buget records including the pumping discharge and the releasing discharge by drainage gate were ollected. The hydrologic data for the inflow discharge from the watershed was obtained by simulation with the aid of USDAUL-74/SNUA watershed model. Also the water quality data were measured at streams and the reservoir. 3.As a result of calibration and verification test by using four comonents of water quality such as Chlorophyll-a, BOD, T-P and T-N, it was found that the correlation coefficeints between the observed and the simulated water qualities showed greater than 0.6, therefore the capability of the model to simulate the water quality was proved. 4.The result based on the model application showed that the water quality of the Haenam Estuary Reservoir varies seasonally with the harmonic trend, however the water quality is good in winter and get worse in summer. Also it may be concluded that the current grarde of water quality in the Heanam Esutary Reservoir is ranked as grade 4 suitable only for the agricultutal use.

  • A three dimensional random walk particle tracking method is applied to the Saemangeum area in order to find stepwise environmental changes according to long term construction. Flow regime around Mangyeong, Dongjin and Geum river estuary changed greatly due to dike construction. It is distinctive that reduction of Byeonsan area's flow field and stagnant change in the northern part of the inner reservoir. Similar characteristics are found through the tidal excursion analysis. By analysis of the vertical mixing structures according to density stratification based on temperature and salinity variation, a salt wedge and very strong stratification arises in the inner part of the reservoir after final closure, while it has been well mixed or partially mixed estuary during construction. Shrinking of horizontal dispersion and vertical mixing capability may cause adverse effect on water quality not only inner part but also outer region of the Saemangeum reservoir.

  • In this study, a comparative study was performed to predict the vapor-liquid equilibria with maximum azeotropic pressure for ethanol-benzene binary system between an equation of state model and a liquid activity coefficient model. Peng-Robinson equation of state model with a Panatiotopoulos mixing rules (PRP) was used and NRTL liquid activity coefficient model proposed by Renon was selected. The PRP model, even though it has only two binary adjustable parameters, was not inferior to the NRTL model to predict vapor-liquid equilibria for low pressure region of ethanol-benzene system and showed a better prediction capability for high pressure region of ethanol-benzene system than the NRTL model with three binary interaction parameters.

  • Due to the advantages of less raw materials and fossil fuel consumption, lower carbon footprint, and the capability of pavement performance improvement, the recycling technology of asphalt is developed and applied for road rehabilitation and construction in the western countries over the past two decades. Cold recycled asphalt mixtures are bituminous materials normally made by mixing recycled aggregate from wasted asphalt with an asphalt emulsion and water at room temperature. This paper aims at investigating the properties of cold recycled asphalt mixture with alkali-activated filler according to wasted asphalt aggregate content. As a result, as the content of wasted asphalt aggregate increased, the marshall stability of cold recycled asphalt mixture decreased and void ratio increased. Also, grading curves for cold recycled asphalt mixture as specified in GR criteria were satisfied in all aggregate mixing conditions regardless of the wasted asphalt aggregate content.

  • In this paper, dispersibility of steel fiber is improved mixing with form for material development of protection and blast resistant structure sprayed concrete. And it is developed a high toughness cellular sprayed concrete material using steel fiber. Oversupply form for dispersibility improvement of steel fiber is mostly fade away through sprayed, finally it is satisfied with the proper mixing ratio under 3 % ~ 6 %. This is considered for compressive strength and flexural toughness. Test results of compressive strength showed superior strength capability in 28, 56 days, also flexural strength and flexural toughness is great. Then oversupply form is enhanced for dispersibility of steel fiber and I think that it did not cause decreasing of strength. But analysis results of pore structure through image analysis failed for a great spacing factor and specific surface area. This is largely measured in spacing factor because air content have a grate evaporation effect for sprayed.

  • ECCMIX component was introduced in RELAP5/MOD3 for calculating the interfacial condensation. Compared to other existing components in RELAP5, user experience of ECCMIX component is restricted to developmental assessment applications. To evaluate the capability of the ECCMIX component, ECCS experiment was conducted which included single-phase and two-phase thermal mixing. The experiment was carried out with test sections containing a main pipe (70 mm inner diameter) and a branch pipe (21 mm inner diameter) under the atmospheric pressure. The steam mass flow in the main pipe ranged from 0 to 0.0347 kg/s, and the subcooled water mass flow in the branch pipe ranged from 0.0278 to 0.1389 kg/s. The comparison of the experimental data with the calculation results illuminated that although the ECCMIX component was more difficult to converge than Branch component, it was a more appropriate manner to simulate interfacial condensation under two-phase thermal mixing circumstance, while the two components had no differences under single-phase circumstance.

  • In this paper, a novel PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) decomposition based Blind Source Separation (BSS) algorithm is proposed for modal identification of structures equipped with tuned mass dampers. Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are extremely effective vibration absorbers in tall flexible structures, but prone to get de-tuned due to accidental changes in structural properties, alteration in operating conditions, and incorrect design forecasts. Presence of closely spaced modes in structures coupled with TMDs renders output-only modal identification difficult. Over the last decade, second-order BSS algorithms have shown significant promise in the area of ambient modal identification. These methods employ joint diagonalization of covariance matrices of measurements to estimate the mixing matrix (mode shape coefficients) and sources (modal responses). Recently, PARAFAC BSS model has evolved as a powerful multi-linear algebra tool for decomposing an $n^{th}$ order tensor into a number of rank-1 tensors. This method is utilized in the context of modal identification in the present study. Covariance matrices of measurements at several lags are used to form a $3^{rd}$ order tensor and then PARAFAC decomposition is employed to obtain the desired number of components, comprising of modal responses and the mixing matrix. The strong uniqueness properties of PARAFAC models enable direct source separation with fine spectral resolution even in cases where the number of sensor observations is less compared to the number of target modes, i.e., the underdetermined case. This capability is exploited to separate closely spaced modes of the TMDs using partial measurements, and subsequently to estimate modal parameters. The proposed method is validated using extensive numerical studies comprising of multi-degree-of-freedom simulation models equipped with TMDs, as well as with an experimental set-up.

  • The methods and performance of a pin-level nuclear reactor core thermal-hydraulics (T/H) code ESCOT employing the drift-flux model are presented. This code aims at providing an accurate yet fast core thermal-hydraulics solution capability to high-fidelity multiphysics core analysis systems targeting massively parallel computing platforms. The four equation drift-flux model is adopted for two-phase calculations, and numerical solutions are obtained by applying the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equation (SIMPLE)-like algorithm in a staggered grid system. Constitutive models involving turbulent mixing, pressure drop, and vapor generation are employed to simulate key phenomena in subchannel-scale analyses. ESCOT is parallelized by a domain decomposition scheme that involves both radial and axial decomposition to enable highly parallelized execution. The ESCOT solutions are validated through the applications to various experiments which include CNEN $4{\times}4$, Weiss et al. two assemblies, PNNL $2{\times}6$, RPI $2{\times}2$ air-water, and PSBT covering single/two-phase and unheated/heated conditions. The parameters of interest for validation include various flow characteristics such as turbulent mixing, spacer grid pressure drop, cross-flow, reverse flow, buoyancy effect, void drift, and bubble generation. For all the validation tests, ESCOT shows good agreements with measured data in the extent comparable to those of other subchannel-scale codes: COBRA-TF, MATRA and/or CUPID. The execution performance is examined with a mini-sized whole core consisting of 89 fuel assemblies and for an OPR1000 core. It turns out that it is about 1.5 times faster than a subchannel code based on the two-fluid three field model and the axial domain decomposition scheme works as well as the radial one yielding a steady-state solution for the OPR1000 core within 30 s with 104 processors.

  • Negative electrode was prepared by mixing $Ti_{0.7}Zr_{0.3}Cr_{0.3}Mn_{0.3}V_{0.6}Ni_{0.8}$ alloy powder with copper or nickel powder and pressing in the air. The cycled electrodes were analyzed with SEM, potentiostat and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the Cu-compacted electrode showed better low temperature dischargeability and higher rate capability than Ni-compacted electrode. From SEM analysis of the cycled electrode compacted with copper powder, it was observed that the surface of MH particles was covered with copper grains and whisker precipitated from electrolyte after dissolution during cell test. It is found that the improved electrode characteristics are attributed to the copper layer on MH particles deposited by dissolution and precipitation(DP) process.
