Reactant mixing has a critical role in ensuring reformate quality and an important design objective is to achieve sufficiently complete mixture of reactants. For that purpose it is required to understand the coupled transport-kinetics phenomena in the mixing region. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model was developed and validated in previous works. The mixing characteristics in various alternatives of a prototype mixing chamber were compared, and then a reduced reaction kinetics was applied to two extreme designs for investigating the impact of gas-phase reactions. Both designs did not reach threshold ethylene mole fraction of 0.001, but surprisingly more ethylene was generated in the design having better mixing characteristics. The presentation will deliver the development process of coupled transport and kinetics model briefly and the detailed information about the mixing characteristics and gas-phase reactions in two mixer designs.

The effects of a mixing vane on air-water mixed flow have been experimentally studied in this work, to investigate the basic mechanisms that the mixing vane affects critical heat flux (CHF). Experiment was performed for various flow rates focusing on bubbly flow and annular flow patterns. Acrylic tube (1.7m long, 11 mm I.D.) and the split vane type mixing vane were used, and ring-type conductance probes were used to measure the liquid film thickness in annular flow. Experimental results show that, (a) bubbly-to slug flow transition and churn-to-annular flow transition occur respectively near the mixing vane compared to the tests without mixing vane, (b) in bubbly flow region, the mixing vane breaks the bubbles into smaller ones and forwards bubbles to the center region of the tube by the centrifugal force, (c) the liquid film thickness in annular flow is decreased near the mixing vane for mass fluxes.

Data obtained from a cruise from 4~12 December, 1998 was analyzed to estimate the mixing effects of wind, surface cooling, and tide. A band denoting a mixing area with a temperature difference of less than 1$^{\circ}C$ between the sea surface and the bottom extended 40~60 km from the coast into the open sea, following 125$^{\circ}$ 30\` E in longitude. This band was divided into two areas; a well-mixed area close to the coast and a stratified region in the open sea. The mixing effect due to the wind was only 2%, yet the mixing effect due to the tides was about 68%. This indicates that surface cooling and tides were the major factors involved in the mixing mechanism on the west coast during the cooling season.
Complete mixture preparation of reactants prior to catalytic reforming is an enormously important step for successful operation of a fuel reformer. Incomplete mixing between fuel and reforming agents such as air and steam can cause temperature overshoot and deposit formation which can lead the failure of operation. For that purpose it is required to apply computational models describing coupled kinetics and transport phenomena in the mixing region, which are computationally expensive. Therefore, it is advantageous to analyze the gas-phase reaction kinetics prior to application of the coupled model. This study suggests one of the important design constraints, the required residence time in the mixing chamber to avoid substantial gas-phase reactions which can lead serious deposit formation on the downstream catalyst. The reactivity of various gaseous and liquid fuels were compared, then liquid fuels are far more reactive than gaseous fuels. n-Octane was used as a surrogate among the various hydrocarbons, which is one of the traditional liquid fuel surrogates. The conversion was slighted effected by reactants composition described by O/C and S/C. Finally, threshold residence times in the mixing region of a hydrocarbon reformer were studied and the mixing chamber is required to be designed to make complete mixture of reactants by tens of milliseconds at the temperature lower than $400^{\circ}C$.
In the chemical, mineral and electronics, mechanically stirred tanks are widely used for complex liquid mixing processes. The paper present results from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the mixing tank in casing process. We used CFD software, FLUENT(Fluent, Inc, Lebanon, NH, version 6.2). A species transport model was used to model the problem. The flow patterns in a mixing tank, 1.6 m in diameter and 2.0 m in height, were studied using CFD. Numerical analysis results show that improved mixing tank was reduced low speed flow region and turbulent region in internal flow of mixing tank.
It was found that mixing patterns suddenly changed at an impeller rotation speed in a dished bottom vessel with dual Rushton turbines. Two isolated mixing regions like doughnuts rings generated at a low rotational speed and three isolated mixing regions generated at a higher speed. This phenomenon was observed at the mixing condition in transition area, where the power number with baffle was the same as that without baffle. We found a phenomenon in which the flow state in a dish-bottom agitation tank equipped with a two-stage Rushton turbine blade changes at a certain rotational speed. In the laminar flow region, the isolated stable donut rings were formed even when the rotational speed was changed, and no specific variation in the mixing pattern was observed. In the transition region, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings do not change even if the rotation speed is changed in the flat bottom vessel, whereas in the dished bottom vessel, when the rotation speed is 450 rpm, the two isolated thick unmixed donut rings are changed to three isolated thin donut rings and then improved mixing. In the dished bottom vessel, in the range of Re=138~178, the isolated ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in three places and the size was also large. But in the flat bottom vessel, the isolated thick ring-shaped unmixed region appeared in two places in Re=116~176 and the size was also small. It appeared in two places, and the size was also small. The condition in which this phenomenon is observed is a transition region, and it was found that when the baffle plate is attached, the power number starts to increase compared to when the baffle plate is not present. In addition, when the mixing Reynolds number exceeded 300 and a slight turbulence was mixed in the flow state, the disconnection of these flow pattern was resolved and the mixture was completely mixed.

Double coaxial are jets(annular and coaxial air jets) between which propane gas is fed was selected to study the structure of diffusion flames in turbulent shear flow. Schlieren and direct photographs are taken to visualize the flame structure. Mean and fluctuating temperatures and ion currents were measured to investigate the macroscopic and the instantaneous flame structure. The objective of this study is to understand the interaction between combustion and mixing process especially in the transition region of turbulent shear flow. The investigation reported in this paper focuses on the macroscopic and the instantaneous structures of three flames obtained. The increased mixing effect resulting from increase of Reynolds number of central air jet makes the flame bluish and short. When the velocity of surrounding air stream is higher than that of central air jet, the instantaneous flame structure is composed of coherent structure. It is considered that the flame structure of transitional region of mixing layer depends on the structure of mixing layer of non-reacting conditions.
Arc pressure is one of important factors in understanding physical arc phenomena. Especially it affects on the penetration, size and shape of TIG welding. Some researches were reported on the effect of arc pressure in low and middle current region. But there are not any research in high current region. The purpose of this study is to investigate the arc pressure distribution with mixing ratio of shield gas such as Ar and He gases. A Cu block with water cooling was specifically designed and used as an anode electrode in order to measure the arc pressure in high current region. Then, the arc pressure distribution was measured with change in welding current and mixing ratio of shield gases. The arc force was obtained by numerically integrating the measured results. As the results, it was shown that the arc pressure was concentrated at the central part of the arc in middle and high current regions when a pure Ar gas was used. In case of Ar + He mixing gas, the arc pressure was much lower than that of pure Ar gas. In addition, it was widely distributed to radial direction.
A CFD analysis for a thermal mixing experiment during steam jet discharge was performed to develop the analysis methodology for the thermal mixing between steam and subcooled water and to find the optimized numerical method. In the CFD analysis, the steam condensation phenomena by a direct contact was modelled by the so-called condensation region model. The comparison of the CFD results with the test data showed a good agreement as a whole, but a small temperature difference was locally found at some locations. However, the commercial CFD code of CFX4.4 together with the condensation region model can simulate the thermal mixing behaviour reasonably well when a sufficient number of mesh distribution and a proper numerical method are adopted

In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics of flame stabilization of the LFG mixing gas. LFG has merely half heating value compared with liquified natural gas but can be greatly utilized as a commercial fuel. In order to use LFG in practical combustors, Webbe Index and heating value of LFG mixing gas were adjusted by mixing LPG with LFG. The comparisons were conducted between CH$_4$and LFG mixing gas for searching the region of flame stabilization based upon the flame blowout at maximum fuel stream velocity. As a result, the flame stability of LFG mixing gas was not improved with that of CH$_4$in non-swirl and weak swirl diffusion flame. However, LFG mixing gas had wide flame stabilization region rather than CH$_4$with increasing ambient flow rate in strong swirl. It was also found that flame stability was affected by included quantity of inert gas such as CO$_2$in the weak swirl but by heating value of fuel in strong swirl.
