The subchannel analysis capability of MARS, a multi-dimensional thermal-hydraulic system code, has been enhanced. In particular, the turbulent mixing and void drift models for the flow-mixing phenomena in rod bundles were improved. Then, the subchannel analysis feature was combined with the existing coupled system thermal-hydraulics (T/H) and 3D reactor kinetics calculation capability of MARS. These features allow for more realistic simulations of both the hot channel behavior and the global system T/H behavior. Using the coupled features of MARS, a coupled analysis of a main steam line break (MSLB) is carried out for demonstration purposes. The results of the calculations are very reasonable and promising.
A common feature in the three-dimensional numerical model experiments of coastal discharge with simplifed model and idealized external forcings is investigated. The velocity fields due to the buoyancy and flow flux, are spreaded radiately and the surface velocites are much greater than homegeneous discharges. The coastal dischargd due to the Coriolis force and flow flux are shaped a anticyclical gyre (clockwise) and determined the scale of the gyre in the coastal zone, respectively. The bottom topography restricts a outward extention of the coastal fronts and it accelerates a southward flow.
By combining ultrasonic energy which is essential for the chain scission of polymer molecules and a multifunctional agent (MFA) having double bonds at its ends, we were able to modify the molecular structure of polycarbonate (PC) from linear to a branched structure during melt processing. The three double bonds in chain ends of MFA were expected to act as sites for trapping macroradicals of PC during the course of ultrasound-assisted mixing process. The transformation of molecular structure of PC was confirmed by the measurements of rheological properties of the modified PC. After the ultrasonic irradiation of PC together with MFA, increase in complex viscosities and shear-thinning behavior were observed. The Cole-Cole plot and measurement of extensional viscosities revealed the characteristic features of branched structure with well-defined extensional behavior which is comparable to that of a commercial branched PC.

There have been many studies of combustion in the circulating fluidized bed. However, little study is available for combustion of wood pellet together fed with wood chip. The mixed ratio of two fuels is an useful information when thermal power company would receive the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) from government. In this study, the combustion behavior and kinetics of such biomass fuels are evaluated using fluidized bed reactor and thermogravimetric analyzers. The mixing ratio of wood chip relative to wood pellet was varied at different temperatures. The results show that a combustion reactivity changed significantly at the wood chip mixing ratio of 40%, particularly at low temperature condition.

As a large scale port development in coastal waters proceeds step by step and populations in the vicinity of port are getting increased, the issue on "how to dispose the treated municipal water and wastewater in harbor" brings peoples′ concern. The submarine outfall system discharges the primary or secondary treated effluent at the coastline or in deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding sea water and becomes very dilute. We intended in this paper to investigate the impact on dilution of effluent and the behavior of flume under the conditions of the seasonal and spatial temperature variations, which have not been noticeable in designing effective marine outfall system. To predict and analyze the behaviour and dilution characteristics of plume not just with the effluent temperature, but also with the seasonal variation of temperature of surround water and tidal changes, CORMIX(Cornell Mixing Zone Expert System)-GI have been applied. The results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of discharged water. We hope to help for the effective operation of outfall system, probable outfall design, protection of water quality, and warm water discharges from a power plant, etc.
A required initial condition for a steam explosion to occur following core meltdown accidents of a nuclear power plant is the formation of a coarse mixture of molten fuel and water. The extent of a premixing is the measure of efficiency of steam explosion that may follow. A simple one-dimensional, transient model and the flooding criteria have been applied to evaluate the fuel/coolant mixing limit. Also, both instant breakup and dynamic breakup models for the mixing process have been separately used here and compared each other. The results indicate that fuel temperature, ambient pressure, mixing diameter, water depth, and pouring diameter are the important parameters affecting the mixing behavior.
It is important to accurately predict the temperature and density distributions in large stratified enclosures both for design optimization and accident analysis. Current reactor system analysis codes only provide lumped-volume based models that can give very approximate results. Previous scaling analysis has shown that stratified mixing processes in large stably stratified enclosures can be described using one-dimensional differential equations, with the vertical transport by jets modeled using integral techniques. This allows very large reductions in computational effort compared to three-dimensional CFD simulation. The BMIX++ (Berkeley mechanistic MIXing code in C++) code was developed to implement such ideas. This paper summarizes major models for the BMIX++ code, presents the two-plume mixing experiment simulation as one validation example, and describes the codes' application to the liquid salt buffer pool system in the AHTR (Advanced High Temperature Reactor) design. Three design options have been simulated and they exhibit significantly different stratification patterns. One of design options shows the mildest thermal stratification and is identified as the best design option. This application shows that the BMIX++ code has capability to provide the reactor designers with insights to understand complex mixing behavior with mechanistic methods. Similar analysis is possible for liquid-metal cooled reactors.

A simple but efficient grid generation technique by using the modified compressible form of stream function has been formulated. Transformation of a physical plane to a streamline plane, the Von Mises Transformation, has been widely used to solve the differential equations governing flow phenomena, however, limitation arises in low velocity region of boundary layer, mixing layer and wake region where the relatively large grid spacing is inevitable. Modified Von Mises Transformation with simple mathematical adjustment for the stream function is suggested and applied to solve the confined coaxial turbulent jet mixing with simple $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. Comparison with several experimental data of axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds shear stress distribution shows quite good agreement in the mixing layer except in the centerline where the turbulent kinetic energy distributions were somewhat under estimated. This formulation is strongly suggested to be utilized specially for free turbulent mixing layers in axisymmetric flow conditions such as the investigation of mixing behavior, jet noise production and reduction for Turbofan engines.
