  • Effects of particle size distribution of alumina ceramics on behaviors of tape casting were investigated with emphases on the rheological characteristic of slurry, green density, green sheet strength, and sintering density. For the control of particle size distribution of alumina, the commercial grade low soda alumina, which had different mean particle size of 3.58 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.42 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, were chosen and blended together. As results, the mixing of 80 wt% fine powder and 20 wt% coarse powder(designated to FC20) led to the increase of packing density and strength of green sheet, and made it easy to handle during processing without lowering of sintering density. Besides, the pseudoplastic behavior of slurry decreased with increase of the fraction of coarse alumina powder.

  • Biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared by mixing a polymer resin and layered silicates by the melt intercalation method. Internal structure of the nanocomposite was characterized by using the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Nanocomposites having exfoliated and intercalated structures were obtained by employing two different organically modified nanoclays. Rheological properties in shear and extensional flows and biodegradability of nanocomposites were measured. In shear flow, shear thinning behavior and increased storage modulus were observed as the clay loading increased. In extensional flow, strain hardening behavior was observed in well dispersed system. Nanocomposites with the exfoliated structure had better biodegradability than nanocomposites with the intercalated structure or pure polymer.

  • Dielectrophoretic behavior of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT) was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The surface conductance of nanotubes was modulated using anionic and cationic surfactant mixtures. The experimental results indicate that dielectrophoretic behavior of SWNT highly depends on the procedure of mixing two opposite-charged surfactants. Clausius-Mossotti factor was calculated by measuring zeta potentials and solution conductivity. Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the dielectrophoretically deposited nanotubes arrary. We found that metallic nanotubes were selectively separated from the nanotubes suspension, resulting from modulation of surface conductance of semiconducting SWNT.

  • Researches on the drying of particle/polymer suspensions receive attentions in technical applications such as manufacturing display and batteries. In this study, the effect of polymers on drying behavior of silica/poly(vinyl alcohol) suspension was investigated in terms of suspension stability and stress development during drying. The effect of polymer adsorption was studied by changing pH. More strongly flocculated suspension with lower pH became more dispersed and close-packed film after drying. Evaluation of potential energy allows us to suggest that the adsorbed polymers which bridge the particles introduce steric repulsion and lead flocculated suspension to dispersed film. When the effect of adsorption kinetics was studied by changing the mixing time, the adsorption amount, characteristic stress and dried film density showed a similar behavior in the form of with a single characteristic time. It implies that the drying process can be determined by simple characteristic equation with a single time constant.

  • Many of thermodynamic-based diesel combustion simulations incorporated a model of fuel spray which attempts to describe how the spray develops according to time. Because the spray geometry is an essential aspect of the fuel-air mixing process, it is necessary to be calculated quantitatively for the purpose of heat release and emission analysis. In this paper, we proposed the calculating method of non-evaporation spray behaviors by injection rate shapes under actual operating conditions of diesel engine. We confirmed the utility of this calculating model as the calculated results were compared with the measured results. This calculating program can be applied usefully to study on the diesel spray behavior.

  • Dextran as a candidate material for colon-specific drug delivery has been studied. Crosslinked dextran hydrogels were prepared by mixing dextran, $MgCl_2$, glutaraldehyde (GA) and polyethyleneglycol (PEG 400) in water. The dextran hydrogels were characterized by measuring equilibrium swelling ratios and mechanical strengths. Response surface methodology (Central Composite Design) was used to evaluate the swelling behaviors and mechanical strengths as functions of concentrations of $MgCl_2$, GA, and PEG 400, which was found to be useful for the evaluation. It showed that the swelling behavior and mechanical strengths were influenced significantly by PEG 400 and $MgCl_2$ concentrations.

  • This study was performed to examine the characteristic of creep behavior by reinforced clayey soil. So, it was carried out measurement of compressive strain and poisson's ratio by the reinforced soil mixtures. At each specimen was made by added calcium carbonate and 19mm length monofilaments into soil at designated ratio, and it was measured during the age of 30 days right after manufacturing the specimens. Because monofilaments controled increase of friction and dry shrinkage of soil into soil, compressive strain of monfilments reinforced soil with mixing rate of 0.3% is low value. And Because void was formed by compressive, vertical strain and horizontal strain of calcium carbonate reinforced soil with rate of 9% is high value.

  • Experimental data are reported on the phase equilibrium of propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate in supercritical carbon dioxide. Phase equilibria data were measured in static method at a temperature of (313.2, 333.2, 353.2, 373.2 and 393.2) K and at pressures up to 27.82 MPa. At a constant pressure, the solubility of propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate for the (carbon dioxide + propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate) system increases as temperature increases. The (carbon dioxide + propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate) system exhibits type-I phase behavior. The experimental result for the (carbon dioxide + propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate) system is correlated with Peng-Robinson equation of state using mixing rule. The critical property of propoxylated neopentyl glycol diacrylate is predicted with Joback and Lyderson method.

  • The rheological behavior of a cordierite honeycomb extrusion paste was investigated by measuring torque values in a Brabender plastograph. The extrusion pastes were formulated using binder (methy cellulose, MC), solvent (water), plasticizer (ploy ethylene glycol, PEG) and lubricants (oleic acid, OA). The mixing sequence and optimum organic binder, at least for homogeneous mixed state, can be determined from the rheological point of view. 3%MC-30%$H_2O$-1.5%PEG-1.0%OA with respect to the cordierite powder was chosen as a binder composition for the extrusion process of cordierite powder.

  • PURPOSES : Evaluation of input parameters determination procedure for dynamic analysis of aggregates in DEM. METHODS : In this research, the aggregate slump test and angularity test were performed as fundamental laboratory tests to determine input parameters of spherical particles in DEM. The heights spreads, weights of the simple tests were measured and used to calibrate rolling and static friction coefficients of particles. RESULTS : The DEM simulations with calibrated parameters showed good agreement with the laboratory test results for given dynamic condition. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the employed calibration method can be applicable to determine rolling friction coefficient of DEM simulation for given dynamic conditions. However, further research is necessary to connect the result to the behavior of aggregate in packing and mixing process and to refine static friction coefficient.
