This study presents the findings of the experiments that were conducted on single- and multi-stage solvent extractors using the stimulus-response method, with the am of identifying flow characteristics of the material inside the mixer-settler-type extractor. The results of this study show that the response characteristics of a single-stage mixer is the same as that of a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR), and that the lag time of a mixer-settler-type extractor increases with the number of its extraction stages. The experimental data for the single- and multiple-stage extractors were analyzed using K-RTD, a response analysis program, to obtain a retention time distribution (RTD) model of one-stage and four-stage extractors. The correlation coefficient between the calculated values and the experimental data was 0.963 for the one-stage extractor and 0.995 for the four-stage extractor, showing quite a good correlation.

A study of the POSE (predispersed solvent extraction) for succinic acid by colloidalliquid aphrons was conducted. The organic phase contaning TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and 1-octanol permits a selective extraction of succinic acid from its aqueous solution. There was no difference of the extractability of POSE and that of conventional mixer-settler type extraction. Taking into account the no mechanical mixing in POSE, it was concluded that the POSE process is more adaptive than the conventional mixer-settler type extraction process. From mass transfer analysis at the various concentration of TOA in counter-current continuous operation, the concentration of TOA had no influence on the mass transfer coefficient. The loading values in continuous POSE were almost same as those in batch operation.

Solvent extraction and stripping experiments were conducted to separate iron from a spent $FeCl_3$ etching solution containing nickel. In the extraction, PC88A, MIBK and Alamine336 were tested as an extractant in various diluents. Alamine336 salt in toluene led to the highest extraction percentage of iron. Stripping percentage of iron from the loaded organic by Alamine336 increased with decreasing HCl conentration of stripping solution and with increasing volume ratio of aqueous to organic. In the operation of bench scale mixer-settler, 7 extraction stage with 1.0M Alamine336 salt in toluene and 10 stripping stage with 0.01M HCl solution resulted in a stripped solution with 133g/L of iron and in a raffinate with most of nickel together with a small amount of iron when the flow rate ratio of organic to aqueous was 7.
Rare earth elements with high purity are demanded for the manufacture of advanced materials. Light rare earth elements are contained in domestic monazite and Ni-MH batteries. In this paper, solvent extraction to separate the light rare earth elements from hydrochloric acid leaching solutions of these resources was discussed. A mixture of cationic and tertiary amine shows synergistic effect on the extraction of LREEs and the extent of pH decrease during extraction is reduced. The effect of solution pH on the extraction and synergism was reviewed. Acquisition of the operation data with mixer-settler on the separation of LREEs by this mixture is necessary to develop a process.
In order to recover Pt from the hydrochloric acid leaching solution of spent catalysts, bench scale Karr reciprocating column was employed. At an optimum flow rate and vibration frequency, iron and Pt was completely extracted by using TBP and Aliquat 336. At the same vibration frequency, iron and Pt was completely stripped by HCl and $HClO_4$ after adjusting the flow rate. In the case of extraction of HCl from the raffinate with TEHA, it was difficult to maintain the stability of the column extractor. A comparison of the operation results between column extractor and mixer-settler is reported.
The extraction of lactic acid by an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM), in batch and continuous mode, has been reported. On the basis of preliminary experiments, the optimum composition of the organic phase (membrane) is determined. When the SPan 80 is used as surfactant, the emulsion breakage exceeds 50%, but only 10% is obtained when the ECA4360 is used. The effects of surfactant, carrier and solute concentrations, phase volume ratio, and stirring speed on the extraction yield were examined and optimized. Surfactant, carrier and diluent used were ECA4360, trilaurylamine (TLA) and dodecane, respectively; 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol (EHD) is used as a co-surfactant. Under optimal conditions, emulsion breaking is very low and the swelling is kept at its lowest level. Under the pH conditions of fermentation medium, the extraction yield is lower. A mixer-settler continuous system was used for testing these conditions. The residence time, the number of extraction stages and the stability of the emulsion were studied and optimized. The extraction yield obtained exceeds 90%.
Solvent extraction behavior of light rare earth elements (Pr, Nd) and medium rare erath elements (Tb, Dy) in the HCl-PC88A-kerosene extraction system was investigated in order to separate high-purity light rare earths (Pr, Nd) and medium rare earths (Tb, Dy) in the mixed rare earth chloride solution. In the batch test step, it was confirmed that the separation efficiency was good when the extractant concentration (PC88A) was 0.5 M, the equilibrium pH after extraction was 0.8 to 1.0 (initial pH 1.3 of the feed), the concentrations of hydrochloric acid in scrubbing solution was set as 0.1 M, the concentrations of hydrochloric acid in stripping solution was set as 2.0 M or more. Based on the experimental data obtained from the batch test, the mixer-settler was composed as follows; 4 stages of extraction, 8 stages of scrubbing, 4 stages of stripping, and 3 stages of pickling organic solution. The Mixer-settler was operated for 180 hours, and the operating conditions were continuously adjusted to obtain the high-purity light/medium rare earths. Finally, the purity of light (Pr, Nd) and medium rare earth elements (Tb, Dy) was reached as 3 N class.
New metallic powder making processes, named "Centrifugal Emulsification Process(CEP)" and "Mixer and Settler(MS)" have been developed to synthesize rapid solidified metallic powders. Through CEP and MS processings, the high temperature metals as well as the low temperature alloys are manufactured. Also, the effects of rapid solidification on the undercooling, solidification rate and crystallization behaviors can be evaluated effectively through the processes. The standard deviations of the synthesized typical Pb-Sn eutectic powders are 1.63 and 1.51 for CEP and MS respectively, and the average size of the MS powders was $18{\mu}m$. The possibility of the customized not only size and shape control but microstructure control was also shown. Both of the new methods can be applied to continuous powder making processes.
The solvent extraction method was applied on the wastewater produced during malonate(malonic acid esters) process to recover cobalt. DEHPA and PC88A were used as organic solvent From separation funnel experiment(batch experiment), the effects of vari- ous parameters (pH, cobalt concentration, reaction rate, and stripping temperature) on solvent extraction were examined and these data were used to derive equilibrium curve. A mixer-settler experiment (continuous experiment) of bench scale was also carried out for the plant construction and a Mccabe-Thiele diagram was obtained. The results of these experiments indicate that cobalt is recoverable above 99 oyo and that its purity as cobalt sulfate Is higher than 99.9 wt%.

The extraction of three kinds of amido podands, N,N,N'N'-tetrabutyl-3-oxa-pentanedi- amide (TBDGA), N,N,N'N'-tetra-isobutyl-3-oxa-pentanediamide(TiBDGA) and N,N,N'N'-tetra- butyl-3,6-dioxa-oct-anediam- ide(TBDOODA) on U(VI),Pu(IV), Am(III), Eu(III) and other metal ions is studied in nitric acid solutions. 40%octanol-kerosene is chosen as diluents to eliminate third phase and emulsion. TBDGA and TiBDGA show extraction selectivity to An(III) and Ln(III) much higher than to U(VI) and Pu(IV). Fe, Ru and Mo is poorly extracted by the three kinds of amid podands in 2~3mol/L $HNO_3$ solutions. Aiming to eliminate interface crude when using simulated HLLW solution in the system of 0.2mol/L TBDGA/Octanol+kerosene, acetohydroxyamic acid was adapted. Distribution ratio of zirconium was decreased when adding acetohydroxyamic acid in aqueous solution, and interface crude disappeared as mixing extractant with HLLW. The counter-current extraction test is carried out in a set of miniature mixer-settler, with 0.2mol/L TBDGA/ 40% octanol-kerosene as extractant to separate U(VI), Pu(IV), Am(III) and Eu(III) from simulated high level liquid waste(HLLW) solution. In battery A, lanthanides and actinides are coextracted into organic phase with the recovery of 99.98% for U(Ⅵ), >99.99% for Pu(IV), and >99.99% for Am(III) and Eu(III) respectively. In battery R1, 99.99% U, 86.2% Pu and a part of Am or Eu are stripped into aqueous phase by 0.2mol/L acetohydroxyamic acid (AHA) in 0.01mol/L $HNO_3$ solution. In battery $R_2$, Am, Eu and remained Pu are completely back-extracted by 0.2mol/L AHA. This separation process contains no salt reagent, and it is not necessary to dilute HLLW feed.
