  • Foamed glass was fabricated by using glass powder and foaming agents. For the glass powder, we used sodalime glass which's manufactured by using refused coal ore obtained as by-product from Dogye coal mine in Samcheok. And for the foaming agents, we used Calcium carbonate, Calcium phosphate and powder of shale type refused coal ore itself which has high content of carbon materials. We additionally used liquid binder for forming, and mixed together. And we formed rectangular shape and treated $800^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in an electrical furnace. The various kinds of foam glass samples were fabricated according to the kinds of foaming agents. The physical properties of samples, as specific gravity and compressive strength, were measured. Pore structure of each samples were investigated too. Foam glass with specific gravity of 0.4~0.7 and compressive strength of 30~72 kg/$cm^2$. Especially we get satisfying foam glass sample with low specific gravity of 0.47 and high compressive strength of 72 kg/$cm^2$ by the use of liquid calcium phosphate as foaming agent. It also had small and even shape of pore structure. Therefore, it is concluded that refused coal ore can be used for raw materials to manufacture secondary glass products such as a foamed glass panel for construction and industrial materials.

  • MgO concrete containing lightly burnt MgO powder at $850{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$ may have a long-term expansibility characteristic. Such expansibility of MgO concrete can compensate the shrinkage at later ages since the hydration of the MgO is very slow. However, the addition of MgO delays the initial hydration of cement and increases the setting time of cement. Also, the porosity and pore-size distribution of the MgO concrete are different from OPC concrete. Therefore, in order to use MgO in practice, both mechanical and durability properties of MgO concrete should be carefully examined. In this study, durability tests on carbonation, freezing-thawing, and diffusion of chloride were carried out after 56 days of underwater curing at $20^{\circ}C$ to compare durability characteristics of 5% MgO-mixed concrete with those of OPC concrete. The results showed that MgO concrete shows a greater durability than the concrete with no MgO, because the micro structure in the MgO concrete is much denser due to its expansibility characteristic.

  • The present study proposes a phased model to assess the lifecycle $CO_2$ amount of concrete structures. The considered system boundary is from cradle to recycling, which includes constituent material, transportation, batching and mixing in ready-mixed concrete plant, use and demolition of structure, and crushing and recycling of demolished concrete. The $CO_2$ uptake of concrete by carbonation during lifetime (40 years) of a structure and the recycling life (20 years) after demolition is estimated using a simple approach generalized to predict the carbonation depth from the surfaces of concrete element and recycled aggregates. Based on the proposed phased model, a performance evaluation table is realized to straightforwardly examine the lifecycle $CO_2$ amount of concrete structures. The proposed model demonstrates that the contribution of ordinary portland cement (OPC) to lifecycle $CO_2$ emission of the concrete structure occupies approximately 85%. Furthermore, the $CO_2$ uptake is estimated to be approximately 15~18% of the lifecycle $CO_2$ emissions of concrete structures, which corresponds to be 19~22% of the emissions from OPC production. Overall, the proposed $CO_2$ performance table is expected to be practically useful as a guideline to determine the $CO_2$ emission or uptake at each phase of concrete structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of combinations of different accelerators mixed on the early age strength development of concrete of 21 to 27MPa in the curing temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ compared with existing early strength agent. The present study was assessed the early strength development of combinations of three different accelerating admixtures with early strength type agent comparing to single accelerating admixture with early strength type agent. As a result of this study, the effect of $CaBr_2+NaSCN+DEA$ combination on strength development showed better than $CaBr_2$ or NaSCN alone with early strength type agent. Therefore, we observed that concrete using $CaBr_2+NaSCN+DEA$ combination with early strength agent was achieved 5MPa 12hours earlier than use of $CaBr_2$ or NaSCN alone.

  • This study is conducted to utilize waste concrete powder made as a by-product manufacturing high quality recycled aggregate. The blaine fineness of the used waste concrete powder was 928 and $1,360cm^2/g$. As the main characteristic of waste concrete powder, it showed an angular type similar to cement, but hydrated products were attached on the surface of particles. In addition, the size of the particles of waste concrete powder was larger than OPC and in terms of chemical components it had higher $SiO_2$ contents. The viscosity of the paste that mixed waste concrete power decreased by 62% at the most, compared to the paste that only used OPC, and the final set time was delayed about two hours. As composition rates of waste concrete powder increased, the flow value decreased by 30% at the most according to the comparison with mortar that only used OPC, and sorptivity coefficients increased by 70%. The compressive strength of mortar decreased by 73% at the most as composition rates of waste concrete powder increased. According to the test results, it is desirable to use waste concrete powder by combining OPC appropriately(below 15%).

  • Portland cement production is under critical review due to high amount of CO2 gas released to the atmosphere. Attempts to increase the utilization of a by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of by-products is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Many researches on alkali-activated concrete that does not need the presence of cement as a binder have been carried out recently. However, most study deal only with alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag or fly ash, as for the combined use of the both, little information is reported. In this study, we investigated the influence of mixture ratio of fly ash/ blast furnace slag tand curing condition on the flowability and compressive strength of mortar in oder to develop cementless alkali-activated concrete. In view of the results, we found out that the mixture ratio of fly ash/blast furnace slag always results to be significant factors. But the influence of curing temperature in the strength development of mortar is lower than the contribution due to other factors. At the age of 28days, the mixture 50% fly ash and 50% ground granulated blast furnace slag activated with 1:1 the mass ratio of 9M NaOH and sodium silicate, develop compressive strength of about 65 MPa under $20^{\circ}C$ curing.

  • This study investigated the effect of chemical treatments on tannins (condensed and hydrolysable) and on the trypsin inhibitor (TI) activity in salseed meal. Triplicate samples of ground salseed meal (1 kg) were mixed with 820 ml of either distilled water (pH 5.3), 0.67 M acetic acid (pH 2.4), 0.67 M sodium bicarbonate (pH 8.2) or 2% polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) solution. The material was placed in airtight plastic containers and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. Samples of untreated salseed meal which had not been subjected to soaking or incubation were run through the analysis to serve as control. Addition of water, acetic acid, sodium bicarbonate and PVP solutions to salseed meal and subsequent anaerobic incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ significantly reduced chemically detectable tannins. At each incubation time, alkali solution was more effective than its counterparts. The effect of acidic solution on hydrolysable tannin was least among the treatments. All the treatments reduced TI activity of salseed meal. The reduction in TI activity by these treatments was similar and ranged between 80-84%. Treatment time effected a decrease in the contents of antinutritional substances. However, the effect of the treatment with the reagents, even for zero incubation time, was quite pronounced. It may be concluded from the present results that the treatment of salseed meal with sodium bicarbonate (0.67 M) is more effective in reducing hydrolysable and condensed tannin contents than PVP, water and acid solutions. Treatment with sodium bicarbonate solution is more economical and easier to handle than acid and PVP treatments. Incubation of the treated material for 12 h is reasonably effective, economical and safe from any mould growth.

  • Aluminum metal process in surface micromachining enables to fabricate Al electrodes or Al structures, which improve electrical characteristics by reducing contact- and line-resistance or makes the whole process to be simple by using oxide as sacrificial layer. However, it is not possible to use conventional sacrificial layer etching process, because HF solution attacks aluminum as well as sacrificial oxide. The mixed solution of BHF and glycerine as an alternative shows the adequate properties to meet with this end. The exact etching properties, however, are sensitively depends on the geometry of the released structure, because the most etching process of sacrificial layer proceeds to the lateral direction in narrow space. Also, the surface roughness of aluminum affects to the etching characteristics. This paper reports experimental results on the effect of microstructure and surface roughness of aluminum to the etching properties. Considering these effects, we propose the optimized etching condition, which can be used practically for the fabrication of aluminum electrodes and microstructures by using standard surface micromachining process without modification or additional process.

  • Four clonal lines of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, were produced through gynogenesis, mixed before hatching and reared communally. After 10 months, a randomly taken sample was subjected to a standardized shallow water stressor. Hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cells count (RBC) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were obtained from stressed and non-stressed fish. DNA fingerprinting was used to confirm the clonal nature of the organisms and to identified the clonal line to which each fish belonged. 1 observed significant differences between clona] lines mostly in the hematocrit and MCV measured under no-stress conditions. Such differences are suggested to represent mainly genetic variance, on account of the common environment provided to all the experimental groups. The stress response ratio was lower than expected, mainly due to some unexpectedly high non-stress values. Heritability values (h$^2$) were medium to high for the no-stress measurements (mean 0.238) and very low or zero for the stressed groups'traits (excepting one high value of 0.484). 1 conclude that the use of communally reared clonal lines represents a good tool for the characterization of the physiological traits, thus allowing for their utilization as genetic selection criteria.

  • To determine mixing ratios for mixtures of rapeseed oil and other oils, an electronic nose (E-nose) based on a mass spectrometer system was used. Rapeseed oil was blended with soy bean oil or corn oil at ratios of 100:0, 97:3, 94:6, 91:9, 88:12, 85:15, and 80:20, respectively. The intensities of each fragment from the mixed rapeseed oil by E-nose based on MS were completely different from those of the soy bean oil and corn oil. The obtained data were used for discriminant function analysis (DFA). DFA plots indicated a significant separation of pure rapeseed oil and soy bean oil or corn oil and their mixtures. The added concentration of soy bean oil or corn oil to rapeseed oil was highly correlated to the first discriminant function score (DF1). When soy bean oil was added to rapeseed oil, it was possible to predict the following equation: DF1=-0.170*conc. of soy bean oil+0.431 ($r^2=0.989$). For corn oil the equation was: DF1=-0.1*conc. of corn oil+0.4 ($r^2=0.844$). The use of an E-nose based on a MS system is as an efficient method for the authentication of pure rapeseed oil.
