This paper is focused on the comprehensive and detailed interpretation for the chemical transformation of individual Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particles during long-range transport from source regions to receptor area. A multi-stage particle sampler was operated at a ground-based site in Taean, Korea directly exposed to the outflow of air masses from China during AD period in April 2003. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses for size-classified individual particles were carried out by a microbeam X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method and a microbeam Particle Induced X-ray Emission (micro-PIXE), respectively. Among major characteristic elements, the elemental masses of soil derived components, sulfur, and chloride varied as a function of particle size showing the monomodal maximum with a steeply increasing at 3.3-4.7 ${\mu}m$ particle size. Although the details on chemical composition of AD particle collected on a straight line from source area to our ground-based site are needed, a large amount of Cl coexisted in and/or on AD particles suggests that AD particles collected in the present study might be actively engaged in chemical transformation by sea-salt and other Cl containing pollutants emitted from the China's domestic sources. Through the statistical analyses it was possible to classify individual AD particles into six distinct groups. The internally mixed AD particles with Cl, which has various sources (e.g., sea-salt, coal combustion origin HCl, gaseous HCl derived from the adsorption of acids to sea-salt, and Cl containing man-made particles) were thoroughly fractionated by the elemental spectra drivened by the double detector system of micro-PIXE.

A reaction mixture was developed for formation of soft organic monolith that was easily smashed, rinsed, refluxed, filtered, and dried to give monolith particles having high pore volume of macropores. This phase was almost without mesopores. The reaction mixture was composed of methacrylic acid, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, polyethylene glycol (porogen), and an initiator in a mixed solvent of toluene and isooctane. The selection of porogen and its amount was carefully carried out to obtain the optimized separation efficiency of the resultant phase. The median macropore size was 1.6 ${\mu}m$, and the total pore volume was 3.0-3.4 mL/g. The median particle size (volume based) was 15 ${\mu}m$, and the range of particle size distribution was very broad. Nevertheless the column (1 ${\times}$ 300 mm) packed with this phase showed good separation efficiency (N~10,000-16,000) comparable to that of a commercial column packed with 5 ${\mu}m$ C18 silica particles.
Silicon carbide (SiC) is used as a substrate material for power semiconductors; however, SiC chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) requires considerable time owing to its chemical stability and high hardness. Therefore, researchers are attempting to increase the material removal rate (MRR) of SiC CMP using various methods. Mixed-abrasive CMP (MAS CMP) is one method of increasing the material removal efficiency of CMP by mixing two or more particles. The aim of this research is to study the mathematical modeling of the MRR of MAS CMP of SiC with SiO2 and TiO2 particles. With a total particle concentration of 32 wt, using 80-nm SiO2 particles and 25-nm TiO2 particles maximizes the MRR at 8 wt of the TiO2 particle concentration. In the case of 5 nm TiO2 particles, the MRR tends to increase with an increase in TiO2 concentration. In the case of particle size 10-25 nm TiO2, as the particle concentration increases, the MRR increases to a certain level and then decreases again. TiO2 particles of 25 nm or more continuously decreased MRR as the particle concentration increased. In the model proposed in this study, the MRR of MAS CMP of SiC increases linearly with changes in pressure and relative speed, which shows the same result as the Preston's equation. These results can contribute to the future design of MAS; however, the model needs to be verified and improved in future experiments.

To estimate dispersion stability of particles in anionic and nonionic surfactant mixed solution, suspending power was examined as functions of duration time of suspension, ionic and nonionic surfactant mixed ratio, surfactant concentration, kinds of electrolyte, ionic strength and mole numbers of oxyethylene additions to nonionic surfactant using $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ particle as the model of particulate soil. The suspending power of anionic and nonionic surfactant mixed solution was relatively higher than that of anionic and nonionic surfactant single solution regardless of solution concentration. The suspending power was gradually decreased with increasing duration time of suspension. In the absence of electrolyte, the effect of surfactant concentration on suspending power was small but in solution with electrolyte, suspending power was lowest at 1 % surfactant concentration. With 1${\times}$10$^{-3}$ ionic strength and polyanionic electrolyte in solution, the suspending power was high but effects of oxyethylene mole number to nonionic surfactant on suspending power was small. Generally the suspending power was gradually increased with decreasing the particle size. Hence the suspending power was inversely related to the particle size.
Nickel powders synthesized by the reduction of hydrazine of nickel salts fiom diethanolamine(DEA) solution, and investigated the morphological characteristics of nickel powders with the addition of hydrazine, reaction temperature, the composition of mixed solvents. The addition of hydrazine in DEA solution largely affected on size control of nickel powders. Under $N_2H_4/Ni^{2+}$ molar ratio= 1.5 and 2.0 conditions, spherical nickel powders in the submicron range obtained, owing to higher the reduction rate. An increase of temperature increased the size of nickel particles. At $220^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, the nickel powders composed of polyhedral particles with high crystalline in the submicron range. The mixed volume ratio of TEA to DEA affected on the increase of particle size and the inhibition of agglomerate between particles.

Studies on plants such as lotus leaf suggested that dual-scale structure could contribute to super-hydrophobicity. We introduced super-hydrophobicity onto poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) fabric with dual-scale structure by assembling $TiO_2$ nano sol. PET fabric was treated with $TiO_2$ sol, water-repellent agent using various parameters such as particle size, concentration. Morphological changes by particle size were observed using field emmission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and AFM measurement, contact angle measurement equipment. The contact angle of water was about 138.5$^{\circ}$, 125.8$^{\circ}$, 125.5$^{\circ}$ and 108.9$^{\circ}$ for PET fabric coated with 60.2nm, 120.1nm, 200nm and 410.5nm $TiO_2$ particles, compared with about 111.5$^{\circ}$ for PET fabric coated with water repellent. When we mixed particle sizes of 60.2nm and 120.1nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the contact angle of water was about 132.5$^{\circ}$. And we mixed particle sizes of 60.2nm and 200nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the contact angle of water was about 141.8$^{\circ}$. Also we mixed particle sizes of 60.2nm and 410.5nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the best super-hydrophobicity was obtained. In this paper, we fabricated various surface structures to the water-repellent surfaces by using four types of $TiO_2$ nano-particles, and we found that the nanoscale structure was very important for the super-hydrophobicity.
Effect of mixed grinding with a planetary ball mill of starting materials before heat treatment on the crystal structure and superconduction properties in the YBaCu composite oxide was studied. The size reduction of powders too place in the early stage of grinding, followed by aggregation of the resultant fine particles. The uniformity of the composition in the mixture was improved with grinding, which later decreased in the crystal grain size and well distribution of twin phase in the sintered bodies. The critical current density of the sintered bodies obtained from the mixture ground for 60 minutes showed the maximum value about 150 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$, while critical temperatures were around 90K and were independent of the grinding time.
For the application of silk sericin, silk sericin powders were prepared by various spray dry conditions and the characteristics of silk sericin/polyurethane mixed films were investigated. When the sericin was dried from the solution at higher inlet and outlet temperature, larger sizes of the powder particles were obtained. It was also found that inlet and outlet temperatures were important factors affecting the shape and surface characteristics of sericin power particle. The many holes and empty spaces were observed at the surface and cross section of sericin/PU mixed film. With the increase of the amount of sericin powder in the mixed films, the size and number of holes and empty spaces were increased. The thickness of sericin/PU mixed film was increased with the content of sericin powder. As the portion of sericin powder increase, the tenacity is decreased while the elongation slightly increased.
To investigate the influence of pollution events on the chemical composition and formation processes of aerosol particles, 24-h integrated size-segregated particulate matter (PM) was collected during the fall season at an urban site of Gwangju, Korea and was used to determine the concentrations of mass, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) and ionic species. Furthermore, black carbon (BC) concentrations were observed with an aethalometer. The entire sampling period was classified into four periods, i.e., typical, pollution event I, pollution event II, and an Asian dust event. Stable meteorological conditions (e.g., low wind speed, high surface pressure, and high relative humidity) observed during the two pollution events led to accumulation of aerosol particles and increased formation of secondary organic and inorganic aerosol species, thus causing $PM_{2.5}$ increase. Furthermore, these stable conditions resulted in the predominant condensation or droplet mode size distributions of PM, WSOC, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$. However, difference in the accumulation mode size distributions of secondary water-soluble species between pollution events I and II could be attributed to the difference in transport pathways of air masses from high-pollution regions and the formation processes for the secondary chemical species. The average absorption ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent ($AAE_{370-950}$) for 370-950 nm wavelengths > 1.0 indicates that the BC particles from traffic emissions were likely mixed with light absorbing brown carbon (BrC) from biomass burning (BB) emissions. It was found that light absorption by BrC in the near UV range was affected by both secondary organic aerosol and BB emissions. Overall, the pollution events observed during fall at the study site can be due to the synergy of unfavorable meteorological conditions, enhanced secondary formation, local emissions, and long-range transportation of air masses from upwind polluted areas.

The synthesis of NiTi alloy powders by hydrogen reduction and dehydrogenation process of NiO and $TiH_2$ powder mixtures is investigated. Mixtures of NiO and $TiH_2$ powders are prepared by simple mixing for 1 h or ball milling for 24 h. Simple-mixed mixture shows that fine NiO particles are homogeneously coated on the surface of $TiH_2$ powders, whereas ball milled one exhibits the morphology with mixing of fine NiO and $TiH_2$ particles. Thermogravimetric analysis in hydrogen atmosphere reveals that the NiO and $TiH_2$ phase are changed to metallic Ni and Ti in the temperature range of 260 to $290^{\circ}C$ and 553 to $639^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the simple-mixed powders by heat-up to $700^{\circ}C$, agglomerates with solid particles and solidified liquid phase are observed, and the size of agglomerates is increased at $1000^{\circ}C$. From the XRD analysis, the presence of liquid phase is explained by the formation and melting of $NiTi_2$ inter-metallic compound due to an exothermic reaction between Ni and Ti. The simple-mixed powders, heated to $1000^{\circ}C$, lead to the formation of NiTi phase but additional Ni-, Ti-rich and Ti-oxide phases. In contrast, the microstructure of ball-milled powders is characterized by the neck-grown particles, forming $Ni_3Ti$, Ti-oxide and unreacted Ni phase.
