CCS(Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage) is considered as the most effective counterplan in the mitigation of climate change. Even though the risk of leakage of $CO_2$ stored in the geologic formation is very low, the public is expected to disagree with the initiation of a CCS project without proper management plans ensuring the safety. In this study, recognition of laypeople were surveyed about CCS, climate change, characteristics of carbon dioxide, storage concepts, ground pressure, the impact of carbon dioxide, and carbon dioxide for leakage. Thereafter the factors that could affect to recognition of CCS were analyzed by regression analysis. A survey was carried out to find out the public understanding and awareness about climate change and CCS. It is the purpose of this study to propose appropriate risk management strategies based on the findings from the survey.
According to IPCC fourth assessment report in 2007, global mean temperatures have risen by 0.74 degrees Celsius over the past 100 years. Moreover, in the recent 25 years, global mean temperatures have risen by 0.45 degrees Celsius, which is 2.4-times larger than those in the past 100 years. The evidences for climate change, such as sea level rise, arctic glacier melt, and desertification in Asia, have occurred and increased over the globe. In Korea, because regional climate has been changed, types of agriculture and fishery should be replaced. And as precipitation pattern behave differently from the past decades, water management would be more difficult, furthermore, atmospheric environment, related to concentrations for ozone, sulfate, etc., could be worse. Nevertheless, we have only focused on greenhouse gas reduction duty for the Convention of Climate Change. Fortunately, in the fourth plan on climate change, we have planned to manage climate change more actively since 2007. In Korea, the emission of carbon dioxide has increased about 1.9-times more, from 311million ton in 1990 to 591million ton in 2004. And also about 2 ppm rise every year for concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As a result, ecosystem, quality of water and atmosphere would be affected. Here, the emission of greenhouse gases over the globe is examined, and the effect of greenhouse gases for climate change is reviewed from the results of previous studies. In addition, the countermeasures of mitigation and adaptation on climate change were discussed for the understanding.

This study established the definition of invasive disturbance species for a sustainable management and biodiversity, and derived the influence factors caused by the species. To define the species, the paper reviewed similar words such as alien species and invasive species, using standard definitions. Also reviewed the results of recent research on the factors of the species. The paper defined the invasive disturbance species as an species whose establishment and spread threaten ecosystems, habitats or species with economic or environmental harm including native and non-native. Through the reviews, The factors were classified as geographic (altitude, slope, and soil, etc.), climate (temperature, precipitation, climate change, etc.) and, anthropogenic (land use, population, road, and human activity, etc.), and species & vegetation structure (species property, local-species richness, and canopy, etc.). Especially, human activity such as urbanization and highways may be associated with both higher disturbance and higher propagule pressure. In the further study, it is required development of mitigation strategies and vegetation structure model against invasive disturbance species in urban forest based on this study.
Sri Lanka has strongly understood the importance of mitigation of climate change and various measures have been taken. To tackle the climate change, after ratifying Paris Agreement, Sri Lanka has pledged to reduce her greenhouse gas emission in the energy sector by 20% (16% unconditional and 4% conditional) by 2030 based on the BAU scenario. Simultaneously, the government introduced its new energy policy and strategies in 2019 with a vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This paper survey related key government documents, policies, reports, and academic articles to investigate opportunities for the private sector to invest large scale solar power deployment (10 MW or above) and to get support from climate finance under article 6 of the Paris Agreement. It has found, growing concern on the environment, energy security issues and increase import expenses for fossil fuels are the main influencing factors to move renewable sources. Further, government investment and FDI both have gradually decreased in the energy sector. Therefore, an alternative financing mechanism is needed. Although the private sector allowed investing in the energy sector since 1996 with the introduction of IPP (Independent Power Producers), it could not make considerable progress on involving large scale solar utility projects. This has revealed government policy is not aligning with the long term generation plan of the electricity sector. The study has also found, it needs more strategic road map, coordination with different institutions, monitoring system to enhance large scale solar contribution.

The cost-effective reduction of greenhouse gas(GHG) emission to avert the most severe impacts of climate change remains one of the widely accepted priorities for global action. In order to facilitate cost-effective abatement strategies, the Kyoto Protocol introduced three mechanisms, or flexible instruments, the Emissions Trading(ET), the Joint Implementation(JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism(CDM). The CDM enables Annex I countries to the Kyoto Protocol to partially meet cost-effectively their emission reduction commitments by undertaking GHG mitigation Projects in developing countries, which do not have any GHG abatement obligations and where the emission reductions are cheaper. One of the major barriers hampering the wide spread implementation of CDM is the high transaction costs associated with the initial identification of promising CDM projects. This paper presents development of a pre-validation program of CDM. The developed program may provide a useful aid to potential investors and project developers as a supportive pre-evaluation tool, and may become an effective tool for the promotion of renewable energy and fuel switching projects.

With the degradation of water quality and, at the same time increased water usage, the sources of high quality, for examples, river/stream, municipal reservoir, wells, artisan and surface water, are diminishing. Therefore, the importance of water quality has been emphasized over the years through publications and various literature sources. Even though considerable research has resulted in significant strides for providing interpretive information and mitigation strategies for improvement of waters, the quality of which is still questionable. This study aims to propose a completely independent self-contained system for purifying waters, solar-powered ozone generator. It is a semi-permanent and cost effective environmental solution. Functions of ozone treatment are: 1) to maintain oxidative flexibility, 2) remove harmful chemicals, wastes, and other substances, and 3) prevent epizootic microbial outbreaks. Recent advances in technology have allowed the development of the practical, self-contained and independent solar powered device. Solar electrical producing panels that charge batteries are the key to using these systems anywhere electrical power is not available. This paper invites the readers to examine the problem and consider the viable, proven solution the solar powered ozone purifying system. This paper also introduces basic concept and background of solar powered ozone generators and examine its feasibility for improving water quality in rivers and streams.

In this paper, we introduce three types of opportunistic interference management strategies in multi-cell uplink networks with time-invariant channel coefficients. First, we propose two types of opportunistic interference mitigation techniques, where each base station (BS) opportunistically selects a set of users who generate the minimum interference to the other BSs, and then their performance is analyzed in terms of degrees-of-freedom (DoF). Second, we propose a distributed opportunistic scheduling, where each BS opportunistically select a user using a scheduler designed based on two threshold, and then its performance is analyzed in terms of throughput scaling law. Finally, numerical evaluation is performed to verify our result.
This study analyzes the reduction effects of runoff and flood damage through different arrangements of stormwater storage facilities. Three scenarios based on the spatial allocation of storage capacity are used: concentrated, decentralized and combinative. The characteristics of runoff and flood damage by scenario are compared. The XP-SWMM model is used for runoff simulation by the probable rainfall of return period. The result shows that the concentrated arrangement of storage facilities is most effective to reduce the amount of peak flow and to delay the time of peak flow. Yet, while the concentrated arrangement is most effective to reduce the inundation damage, it is not effective to reduce runoff volume. The decentralized arrangement is most effective to reduce runoff volume. The combinative arrangement is effective not only the runoff reduction but also the reduction of flood damage. The result indicates that the flood mitigation strategies against heavy rainfall need to consider decentralized on-site arrangement for the reduction of runoff volume along with concentrated off-site arrangement of storage facilities.
This study focuses on one of typical energy-intensive industries, the cement industry. The purpose of the study is to propose $SO_2$ emission reduction measures in the cement industry. This study partially employed and modified AIM(Asia-Pacific Integrated Model) developed by Japan National Environmental Research Institute to develop AIM/KOREA SULFUR model for simulation. In the study, a base scenario, and mitigation scenarios(a use of low-sulfur contain fuel, fuel conversion to cleaner energy, an induction of desulfurization systems, and energy saving) were employed. The results of the simulation are summarized below: The sulphur dioxide emission from the cement industry in 1992 was estimated to be 106,000 metric tons; however, according to base scenario, sulphur dioxide emission is expected to be increased to 219,000 metric tons, which is 2.1 times greater than that in 1992 by year 2020. To alleviate such increasement, simulation results under various scenarios proved that some degrees of reduction may be possible by an induction of desulfulization systems although there may be numerous ways to interpretate the simulation results.
An existing risk diagnosing methodology (RDM) diagnoses corporate risk for product-innovation projects. However, it cannot evaluate and compare the risk levels of multiple alternatives in the product development stage. This paper proposes a modified risk diagnosis method to fill the gap of risk evaluation in selections of innovative product alternatives and the application of the method will be also illustrated by a case problem on alternative selections in electrical dimmer designs. With RDM as the foundation, a modified RDM (MRDM) is proposed to deal with the problem of selecting innovative project alternatives during the early stages of product development. The Bayesian network; a probabilistic graphical model, is adopted to support the risk pre-assessment stage in the MRDM. The MRDM is proposed by incorporating the risk pre-assessment stage into the foundation. By evaluating the engineering design risks in two electrical dimmer switches, an application of the MRDM in product innovation development is successfully exemplified. This paper strengthens the existing methodology for RDM in innovative product development projects to accommodate innovative alternatives. It is advantageous for companies to identify and measure the risks associated in product development so as to plan for appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
