  • Recently, more highly effective construction materials are needed for the reasonable and economical structure system is required as the construction structures become more multi storied, large-sized and diversified. That is to say, the highly qualified concrete is positively promoted as a part of plan to establish the effective space according to the dead load of structures and diminish of segment profile and to build up the economic structures. However, the high strength concrete has the problems such high brittleness and low ductility. Specially, for the high strength concrete, it has different strength from normal concrete as the internal temperature goes up steadily due to high heat of hydration by the quantities of highly level of cement, so the concrete which is mixed with various miscible materials is used. As the development and study for high strength concrete (more than $100N/mm^2$) is under way actively and the strength of high strength concrete increases, the strength different from the existing high strength concrete of ten than $100N/mm^2$, but the study for this is not adequate and indefinite. In addition, the study and report to apply the strength expression and analysis results of internal structure. Therefore, this study is an experiment about using the miscible materials affects what happens to the longitudinal physical property.

  • The present study is directed at flow and heat transfer of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures in a circular tube. PAG and POE oils are considered in this study. Flow characteristics of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures have been investigated by flow visualization. Pressure drop has been measured in the range of operating mass flow rate from 0.1 to 0.4 kg/min in a circular tube. Heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$/oil mixtures have been investigated using a counterflow heat exchanger. In case of pure liquid $CO_2$ as well as $CO_2$ and POE mixtures, flow are seen to be uniform so that $CO_2$ and POE oil are still miscible even at flowing state. However, it is found that $CO_2$ and PAG are not miscible. Pressure drop of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/POE mixtures as well as pure $CO_2$ at a fixed mass flow rate. As the concentration of POE oil is increased from 0 to 5 wt%, pressure drop is increased. However, heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$/POE mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures. The f-factor correlation and Nusselt number correlation for $CO_2$/POE oil mixtures are suggested in this paper.

  • A controlled column study using elution development and miscible displacement was conducted to assess heavy metal transport characteristics in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), soil treated with an equivalent of sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The elution curves (ECs) and the breakthrough curves (BTCs) for Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ treated soils are not different from the sludge-untreated soil, The ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of 10 mg of each Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to those of Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which had no Cd, Cu and Zn added, but were very different with the ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of Cd, Cu and Zn containing 50 mg of each metal. On the other hand, the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil columns that were eluted with 500 and $1000mg\;L^{-1}$ of mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to each other, but were distinctly different with the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column that was eluted with $100mg\;L^{-1}$ mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn. Sewage sludge applied at rates of 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ did not affect the transport characteristics of this calcareous soil. The apparent mobility for this sludge treated soil and sludge is: Cd >Zn>Cu. The transport characteristics of Cd and Zn are similar to each other, but are different from those of Cu.

  • Toughening of epoxy resins for improvement of crack resistance has been the subject of intense research interest during the last two decades. Epoxy resins are successfully toughened by blending with a suitable liquid rubber, which initially remains miscible with epoxy and undergoes a phase separation in the course of curing that leads to the formation of a two-phase microstructure, or by directly blending preformed rubbery particle. Unlike the situation for thermoplastics, physical blending is not successful for toughening epoxy resins. Recent advances in the development of various functionalized liquid rubber-based toughening agents and core-shell particles are discussed critically in this review.

  • Thermodynamics and gas transport properties of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) blends with polyvinylmethylether (PVME) containing various amount of poly (styrene-b-methylmethacrylate) copolymer (P(S-b-MMA)) as a compatibilizer were studied. To extract interaction energies of binary pairs involved in the blends from the phase separation temperatures using an equation-of-state theory, PVME blends with methylmethacrylate copolymers containing various amount of styrene (SMMA) were prepared. PVME formed miscible blends with methylmethacrylate copolymers containing more than 70 wt% styrene and these miscible blonds showed a LCST-type phase separation behavior. Based on the interaction information obtained here, P(S-b-MMA) copolymer was added to the PMMA/PVME blends to enhance their compatibility. The average diameter of the dispersed rubber particles was gradually decreased for the blends of containing P(S-b-MMA) from 0 to 5 phr and then leveled off at a fixed size. At a fixed bland composition, the gas permeation was also increased as the P(S-b-MMA) content increased from 0 to 5 phr and then leveled off when the P(S-b-MMA) content was higher than 5 phr.

  • One of the most important factors which affect the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials is the interfacial shear strength (IFSS). The IFSS of glass fiber and polycarbonate (PC)/styrene-co-acrylonitrile (SAN) blend system has been measured by the single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT). SAN contents were varied up to 30 wt% and the IFSS increased with the SAN contents. Styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA) was used as the compatibilizer and the glass fiber was surface treated with organosilane coupling agents. Addition of small amount of SMA in PC/SAN blend improved the IFSS by chemical bonding between maleic anhydride and silanol. The optimum MA content was 0.4 wt% of total matrix contents. Also, IFSS was greatly affected by the miscibility condition of SAN/SMA blends, which depended on the copolymer composition of SAN and SMA. It was found out that, higher IFSS could be obtained when the SAN/SMA blend was in miscible pairs. In case of SAN/SMA miscible pairs, the IFSS depended on the MA content in total matrix, not on the MA content in SMA.

  • PHEAs [${\alpha}$,${\beta}$-poly(2-hydroxyethyl-DL-aspartamides)], a class of poly(amino acid), have been widely studied as biodegradable and biocompatible polymers for potential biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, we investigated a homogeneous blend of PHEA with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PNVP) and its semi-IPN (semi-interpenetrating polymer network) gels. Blend films were prepared by a solution casting method. The resulting blends were totally transparent over the whole composition ranges and the single $T_g$, changing monotonously with composition, was observed by DSC to confirm the miscibility between these two polymers. FTIR was used to discuss the possible hydrogen-bonding interaction between polymers. In addition, semi-IPN type gels were prepared by chemical crosslinking of PHEA/PNVP blend solution using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as a crosslinking reagent. The prepared gel was characterized by their swelling property and morphology.

  • Fracture behaviors of polycarbonate (PC)/polyestrercarbonate (PEC) blends and their miscibility have been examined to find out the mechanism of ductilie-brittle transition of fracture behavior which would be a main governing factor on the thickness sensitivity of impact strength of PC. $T_g$ measurement showed that PEC with a carbonate content higher than 30 mol% was miscible with PC. In the notched Izod impact test of PC, ductile-brittle transition occurred in the range of 4 to 5 mm thickness. The impact strength of miscible PC/PEC5 blends ductile-fractured in the thin specimens decreased with increasing PEC5 content, which was in accordance with the decrease of elongation at break in tensile test. In the brittle fracture of the thick specimens, the impact strength was well correlated with the plastic zone size in the vicinity of the notch tip.

  • For the sustained release formulation of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), dissociable rhGH aggregates were microencapsulated within poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) [PLGA] microparticles. rhGH aggregates with 2 - 3 m Particle diameter were first produced by adding a small volume of aqueous rhGH solution into a partially water miscible organic solvent phase(ethyl acetate) containing PLGA. These rhGH aggregates were then microencapsulated within PLGA polymer phase by extracting ethyl acetate into an aqueous phase pre-saturated with ethyl acetate. The resultant microparticles were 2 - 3 m in diameter similar to the size of rhGH aggregates, suggesting that PLGA polymer was coated around the protein aggregates. Release profiles of rhGH from these microparticles were greatly affected by changing the volume of the incubation medium. The release rhGH species consisted of mostly monomeric form with having a correct conformation. This study reveals that sustained rhGH release could be achieved by microencapsulating reversibly dissociable protein aggregates within biodegradable polymers.

  • Cellulose acetate (CA) and poly-4-vinyl pyridine (PVP) in various weight proportions were mixed in a mixed solvent of trifluoroacetic acid: methylene chloride/6:4 (v:v). CA was miscible with PVP in that solvent system. CA/PVP/solvent show liquid crystal in a certain range of concentration and the nature of that liquid crystal was cholesteric. Films of the liquid crystal composite cast from the liquid crystal solutions of CA/PVP were tested in a viewpoint of biomembrane. Results show that considering permselectivity CA/PVP membrane is better than that of CA and CA/PVP membrane is closer to cell membrane.
