Considerable differences exist in the characteristics of size reduction and classification because of biomass species. Miscanthus sacchariflorus (M. sacchariflorus) Goedae-Uksae 1 is not used efficiently because of the imperfections of the processing technology for this biomass. Therefore, for the best use of specific biomass, improvement in the feedstock preparation of the biomass for processing, such as pellet manufacturing, is necessary. In this study, a laboratory-scale cone grinder and air classifier were designed and combined to investigate the performance of the combination system for M. sacchariflorus. The average equivalent spherical diameter of particles showed a close relationship with air velocity for air classification. The air velocity range to classify proper particles for pelletization was determined to be 6.0-6.8 m/s. The mass ratios of the collected particles to feed mass for four lengths of chopped M. sacchariflorus were 45.1%:46.1%, 39.1%:46.6%, and 44.1%:52.8% at the first, second, and third steps in simulating the multistep combination system, respectively.
Vegetation structure and sediment properties were investigated in the Wondong wetland of the Nakdong-gang, Yangsan-city, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The vegetation type was classified into eleven communities based on the actual vegetation map: Miscanthus sacchariflorus community, Salix nipponica community, Phragmites communis community, Zizania latiofolia community, Trapa japonica community, Hydrilla verticillata community, Hydrocharis dubia community, Digitaria sanguinalis community, Nelumbo nucifera community, Phragmites japonica community, and Salix matsudana for. tortuosa community. Among them, Distribution area of Miscanthus sacchariflorus community was largest as 12.4 ha (36.3%). The dominant vegetation type was Miscanthus sacchariflorus community based on phytosocialogical method, and it was classified into two subcommunities; Persicaria maackiana - Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity and Hydrilla verticillata - Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity. Ranges of the sediment properties such as pH, conductivity, organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus were 4.9~6.2, $23{\sim}423{\mu}mho/cm$, 0.37~11.16%, 0.02~0.36% and 0.14~0.38mg/100g, respectively. Percentages of the partical size of the sediment such as clay, silt, and sand were 5.0~27.0%, 6.7~31.3%, and 46.7~88.3%, respectively.
This study was carried out to suggest an effective method for the rehabilitation of Close-to-Nature River and artificial wetland. The results on the revegetation methods by seeding and sodding of Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides were summarized as follows. Seed germination of Phragmites japonica was 76.3% at $30^{\circ}C$, that of Miscanthus sacchariflorus was 68.7% at $20^{\circ}C$, that of Themeda triandra germinated 52.3% at $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and that of Pennisetum alopecuroides germinated 86.7% at $30^{\circ}C/20^{\circ}C$ alternating temperature. Seed germination of Pennisetum alopecuroides exceeded 80% at $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and $25^{\circ}C/15^{\circ}C$ alternating temperature. At 60 days after seeding, the ground coverage of Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides reached 81%, 81 %, 74%, and 86% respectively in the soil media of vermiculite and peatmoss(1 : 1 by volume). In the results of sod experiment, Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Themeda triandra, and Pennisetum alopecuroides were formed sod completely in soil composition type of vermiculite and peatmoss(1 : 1, v/v). Thus this media seems to be best sad production media for rehabilitation works of Close-to-Nature River and man-made wetlands. Phragmites japonica and Miscanthus sacchariflorus were not significantly different in shoot height and the number of tillers by different planting distance for the first one year of experiment. Pennisetum alopecuroides shows high possibility to be used for Close-to-Nature River rehabilitation works by seeding.
This study was carried out to select the utilizable vegetations for the stabilization of slopes and river banks, landscape creation and water quality cleansing in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 10 herbaceous plants were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics under complete and partly flooding conditions in the nursery. The ranking order of flooding tolerance based on survival ability showed that Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis and Phragmites japonica were first, Typha angustata, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Pennisetum alopecuroides were second, and Cymbopogon tortilis, Miscanthus sinensis, Kummerowia striata and Lolium multiflorum were last. That of flooding tolerance base on growth ability showed that Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis, Phragmites japonica, Typha angustata and Miscanthus sacchariflorus were first, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis and Kummerowia striata were second, and Cymbopogon tortilis and Lolium multiflorum were last. Espcially, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites japonica and Phragmites communis showed good survival and growth abilities when they were complete flooded for 60 days. Also high flooding tolerant species grow as better as flooding period longer under the partly flooding condition. It was found that Pennisetum alopecuroides and Kummerowia striata have excess moisture tolerance because they showed good survival and growth under the partly flooding condition. This study confirmed that the possibilities of utilizing Iris pseudoacorus, Typha angustata, Phragmites japonica, Phragmites japonica, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Pennisetum alopecuroides and Kummerowia striata as the efficient plants for vegetation measures on the flooded slopes of dam and various impoundment sites.

Among them, Phragmites communis community was the largest (34.9 ha, 29.53%). The dominant vegetation type was Persiazria hydropiper - Persicaria maackiana community based on the phytosociological method, and it was classified into four subcommunities: Phalaris arundinacea-Salix nipponica subcommunity, Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity, Phragmites communis subcommunity, and Spirodela polyrhiza subcommunity, and Acorus calamus var. angustatus group belongs to Miscanthus sacchariflorus subcommunity.
Covering rate, visual rating and sod development were evaluated under three natural fiber materials with Phragmites spp. when over a plastic sheet. The results were as follows. (1) The last covering rate was high on jute net, coir mat and on Miscanthus sacchariflorus, respectively while the early covering rate was high on coir mat and on Miscanthus sinensis+perennial ryegrass. (2) The early growth was good on perennial ryegrass but the covering rate gradually turned poor because of summer drought. (3) Sod was highly developed on Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Miscanthus sinensis compared with other species and mixtures. (4) The covering rate and visual rating were high on natural fiber materials such as coir mat and jute net when compared with on natural fiber materials such as none treatment plots. (5) The natural fibers materials on Phragmites spp. and Miscanthus spp. were effect on sod establishment. Sod coir mat was highly established. (6) The carpet-type sod was best developed on the coir mat.
A new species, Miscanthus wangpicheonensis of section Kariyasua, is described and illustrated from the morphological characteristics based on a type specimen collected from Gyeongsangbuk-do. This new species is similar to Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack., and M. longiberbis (Hack.) Nakai. The characters which distinguish the above two species are short leaves and racemes, callus hairs 1-1.5-times longer than spikelet, and well-developed awns of spikelet. The specific epithet, "wangpicheonensis", is based on the name of the locality where the new species is found. We assume this new species originated from the hybridization of Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack., and M. longiberbis (Hack.) Nakai. Miscanthus wangpicheonensis is found in only one locality in Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea.

This study was carried out to investigate the removal rate of sulphur of the litters in the Phragmites communsis, Seirpus tabernaemontani, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Typha angustata aquatic grassland ecosystem on the lake Paldangho. The annual litter productions of sulphur were 50.91 /$m^2$, in P. communis, 180.83 g /$m^2$, in S. tabernaemontani, 25.87 g /$m^2$, in M. sacchariflorus and 151.39 g /$m^2$, in T. angustata, respectively. The removal rates r, of sulphur in the litters were 0.86 in P. communis, 0.82 in S. tabernaemontani, 0.43 in M. sacchariflorus and 0.47 in T. angustata respectively, The times required to reach 50, 95 and 99 percent of the steady state levels and turnover values of sulphur on the grass-land floor were 0.81, 3.49 and 5.82 years in the P. communis, 0.85, 3.68 and 6.13 years in the S. tabernaemontani, 1.62, 7.00 and 11.67 years in the M. sacchariflorus and 1.49, 6.44 and 10.73 years in the T. angustata, It is considered that the high removal rates of sulphur in four grasslands of aquatic ecosystem contribute to the efficient removal of sulphur, a pollutant, at the lake Paldangho. Key words: Removal rate, Accmulation, Paldaugho, Sulphur, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus saechariflorus, Seirpus tabernaemontani, Typha angastata.
Size reduction is an important pre-processing operation for utilizing biomass as a sustainable resource in industrial-scale energy production and as a raw material for other industries. This work investigates the size reduction characteristics of air-dried Miscanthus sacchariflorus Goedae-Uksae 1 (Amur silver grass) via image processing and identifies the morphological characteristics of comminuted and screened M. sacchariflorus. At chopping lengths of 18, 40, 80, and 160 mm, 81%, 77%, 78%, and 76% of the particles, respectively, passed through a 4-mm sieve. Even a knife mill with a very small screen aperture (>1 mm) admitted over 10% of the particles. The average circularity and aspect ratio of the particles were <0.30 and >10, respectively. These results confirm that in all preparation modes, most M. sacchariflorus particles were needle-like in shape, irrespective of the type of preparation.
