  • The insect cuticle undergoes drastic morphological alterations during postembryonic development and is an extracellular structure composed mainly of chitin and proteins that are synthesized and secreted by epidermal cells. Cuticle proteins, the major components of insect integument, are recently being focused as a model fur studying the mechanisms of gene regulation during molting and metamorphosis. (omitted)

  • The permselectivity of alkali metal chlorides through silk fibroin membrane was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$: The Permeability coefficients were found to increase in a sequence of LiCl < NaCl < KCl < CsCl. This sequence was explained by considering the partition and the hydrophilic membrane. The dependence of the permeability on the salts concentration was interpreted by means of TMS theory. The ionic mobility ratio of alkali metal chlorides through this membrane decreased with the increase of the Stokes radius. The Effectiveness of the charged density was found to depend on the ionic species. The greater the Stokes radius the larger the effective charge density of membrane.

  • Several culture conditions affecting cellulose production by a newly isolated Acetobacter sp. A9 were examined by cultivating cells under shaking cultures. The inoculum size in the range of 1-10% (v/v) did not influence cellulose production. Maximum cellulose production was obtained with 200 rpm of agitation speed. The cells grown in the 75 ml of medium in a 250-ml conical flask produced the highest level of cellulose. The strain was able to produce cellulose at 25-3$0^{\circ}C$ with a maximum at 3$0^{\circ}C$. Cellulose production occurred at pH 4.5-7.5 with a maximum at pH6.5.

  • Hydroxyapatite powders were prepared by oyster shells and phosphoric acid. They were heat treated at the $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. Only hydroxyapatite phases were observed by the XRD analysis. XRF confirmed that the prepared hydroxyapatite composed with 63.2wt% CaO and 35.7wt% $P_2$$O_{5}$ . In the ICP test, small amount of heavy metals were detected as low as 0.009 ppm Ti and 0.002 ppm Ba. The test of bone density was done in human body during three months. As the periods of medication progressed, the bone density was increased.

  • Effect of initial PH on the lipid accumulation and fatty acid composition of some species of mold were investigated. The maximum lipid content content produced by Aspergillus niger var. macrosporus was 17.5% at PH 3.5, by Aspergillus fumigatus 23.5% at PH 3.5 by Penicillium spinulosum 12.0% at PH 4.0 and by Penicillium notatum 7.3% at PH 4.0. The major fatty acids were palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acid in all experimental molds. At PH from 4.5 to 6.0, the proportion of linoleic acid was increased and those of palmitic and oleic acid were decreased with rising in PH, therefore, degree of lipid unsaturation was increased in all experimental molds.

  • Cordierite ceramics with low dielectric constants were obtained through sol-gel techniques using as metal alkoxides. The powders for the sintered cordierite ceramics were prepared by hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with ethanol and distilled water. In the hydrolysis, the mole ratio of HCI/TEOS was controlled by changing the amount of HCI as a catalyst. The sol-gel derived powders were dried, pressed, and fired at $1300^{\circ}C$. The dried powders were calcined at $800{\circ}C$ for 3hours to remove residual organics. The fired bodies with different dielectric constants were obtained by using HCI adjusted to various mole ratios of HCI/TEOS in the process. The variation of the amount of HCI catalyst led to a significant influence on dielectric contant, which was attributed to the formation of pores in the sintered body. Especially, the porosity of the sintered body influenced the dielectric constants.
