  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • A new distance measurement method with the use of a single camera and a rotating mirror is presented. A camera in front of a rotating mirror acquires a sequence of reflected images, from which distance information is extracted. The distance measurement is based on the idea that the corresponding pixel of an object point at a longer distance moves at a higher speed in a sequence of images in this type of system setting. Distance measurement based on such pixel movement is investigated. Like many other image-based techniques, this presented technique requires matching corresponding points in two images. To alleviate such difficulty, two kinds of techniques of image tracking through the sequence of images and the utilization of multiple sets of image frames are described. Precision improvement is possible and is one attractive merit. The presented approach with a rotating mirror is especially suitable for such multiple measurements. The imprecision caused by the physical limit could be improved through making several measurements and taking an average. In this paper, mathematics necessary for implementing the technique is derived and presented. Also, the error sensitivities of related parameters are analyzed. Experimental results using the real camera-mirror setup are reported.

  • A novel alignment method that can be used for aligning the collimating mirror employed in a monochromator is described. In most of the spectrometer industry, the alignment of optical components such as a focusing mirror, a grating and a collimating mirror has been performed manually so far. In this paper, we use a matchedfilter based image correlation technique for measuring the accurate image position which is used for aligning the collimating mirror. The experimental results show that with the proposed scheme automatic alignment can be completed within 10 seconds.

  • Polygon Mirror Scanning(PMS) is composed of LED array, magnifying lens, polygon mirror and motor. It is important to correct the lens aberrations to gain the image we want to show. In this paper, we have simulated the lens aberration correction to reduce the spherical aberration . We have obtained a aspherical lens which is corrected the spherical aberration.

  • This paper introduces a smart mirror technology that recognizes a person's facial expressions through image classification among several artificial intelligence technologies and presents them in a mirror. 5 types of facial expression images are trained through artificial intelligence. When someone looks at the smart mirror, the mirror recognizes my expression and shows the recognized result in the mirror. The dataset fer2013 provided by kaggle used the faces of several people to be separated by facial expressions. For image classification, the network structure is trained using convolution neural network (CNN). The face is recognized and presented on the screen in the smart mirror with the embedded board such as Raspberry Pi4.

  • A 100*100.mu.m$^{2}$ aluminum micro mirror is designed and fabricated using a thick photoresist as a sacrificial layer andas a mold for nickel electroplating. The micro mirror is composed of aluminum mirror plate, two nickel support posts, two aluminum hinges, two address eletrodes, and two landing electrodes. The aluminum mirror plate, which is supported by two nickel support posts, is overhung about 10.mu.m from the silicon substrate. THe aluminum mirror plate is actuated like a seesaw by electrostatic force generated by electic potential difference applied between the mirror plate and the address electrode. This paper presents some methods to measure the optical and the dynamic characteristics of the fabricated micro mirror.

  • In order to measure the retina thickness, the retina photographing system and the multi-channel high speed image data acquisition system is developed. This system requires the optical processing techniques and the high speed image processing techniques. The HeNe laser beam is projected the retina in artificial eye and then we sensed the reflected laser signal using APD array. The laser projection system on retina using optical instruments is implemented. In order to project the plane laser beam on retina, laser photographing system used the polygon mirror for horizontal scanning and the galvano mirror for vertical scanning. We acquired retina images in each channel of APD array, transferred computer using PCI interface the image data after real-time A/D converting.

  • Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to monitor brain activation by measuring changes in the concentration of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin (Hb) by their different spectra in the near-infrared range. Because NIRS is a noninvasive, highly flexible and portable device, it is very suitable to study brain activation when a human repeatedly performs a manipulative task, and possibly provides useful information to construct human adaptive mechatronics (HAM). There is some evidence that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a major role in working memory and it is proposed that the use of working memory decreases as a human develops manipulative skills. In the present study, we investigated the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of the brain in Brodmann's areas 9 and 46 in drawing tasks to examine whether NIRS can measure the changes of DLPFC activation as a human develops manipulative skills. Subjects performed a mirror image drawing task and a square drawing task by ones' left hands. In the mirror image task the subject drew following a star shape based on a mirror image of it, but square drawing did not involve mirror image and was estimated to be simpler. The changes of the concentration of oxy-Hb was higher in the mirror image drawing than the square drawing in most subjects. The changes of oxy-Hb decreased as the subject repeated the drawing task in most subjects. In conclusion, The activation of DLPFC measured by NIRS can reflect the brain activity in the development of manipulative skills.

  • Catadioptric mirrors are widely used in automatic surveillance system. The major drawback of catadioptric mirror is its unequal image resolution. Equidistance catadioptric mirror can be the solution to this problem. Even double panoramic structure can generate stereo images with single camera system. So two images obtained from double panoramic equidistance catadioptric mirror can be used in finding the depth and height values of object's points. But compared to the single catadioptric mirror. the image size of double panoramic system is relatively small. This leads to the severe accuracy problem in estimation. The exact axial alignment and the exact mount of mirror are the sources that can be avoided but the focal length variation is inevitable. In this paper, the effects of focal length variation on the computation of depth and height of object' point are explained and the effective focal length finding algorithm, using the assumption that the object's viewing angles are almost same in stereo images, is presented.
