  • This paper consists of two parts: In the first part, we describe our work to build hierarchical knowledge base of digital library patron's research interests and learning topics in various scholarly areas through analyzing well classified Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) of NDLTD Union catalog. Journal articles from ACM Transactions and conference web sites of computing areas also are added in the analysis to specialize computing fields. This hierarchical knowledge base would be a useful tool for many social computing and information service applications, such as personalization, recommender system, text mining, technology opportunity mining, information visualization, and so on. In the second part, we compare four grouping algorithms to select best one for our data mining researches by testing each one with the hierarchical knowledge base we described in the first part. From these two studies, we intent to show traditional verification methods for social community miming researches, based on interviewing and answering questionnaires, which are expensive, slow, and privacy threatening, can be replaced with systematic, consistent, fast, and privacy protecting methods by using our suggested hierarchical knowledge base.

  • An environmental survey from three abandoned metal mine areas was undertaken on to assess the risk of adverse health effects on human exposure to heavy metals influenced by past mining activities. Tailings contained high concentrations of heavy metals may have a impact on soils and waters around the tailing piles. In order to perform the human risk assessment, chemical analysis data of soils, rice grains and waters for As, Cd, Cu and Pb have been used. The HQ values for heavy metals via the rice consumption were significantly higher compared with other exposure pathways in all metal mine areas. The resulting HI values in three mine areas were higher than 9.0, and their toxic risk due to rice ingestion was strong in these mine areas. The cancer risk of being exposed to As by the rice consumption from the A, B and C mine areas was $5.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$, $6.8\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ and $3.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$, respectively. The As cancer risk via the exposure pathway of rice ingestion from these mine areas exceeds the acceptable risk of 1 in 10,000 set for regulatory purposes. Thus, the daily intakes of rice by the local residents from these mine areas can pose a potential health threat if exposed by long-term As exposure.

  • 105 oriented samples (19 matrix samples, 86 cobble samples) were collected from the Silla Coglomerate Formation in Jinju and Goryeong areas to clarify the regional remagnetization of Cretaceous Kyongsang supergroup. Both the alternating field and thermal demagnetizations were conducted for the collected samples. The characteristic remanent magnetizations of these samples divided into three types in the Silla Conglomerate Formation: The ingredient magnetic minerals are magnetite, hematite, or both magnetite and hematite in a specimen. The characteristic remanent directions of cobble samples did not clustered to any direction. And the characteristic remanent directions of interbedded sandstones in the Silla Conglomerate Formation is $D/I=20.6^{\circ}/54.5^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=11.1^{\circ}$, k=48.8) after tilting correction, agree with previous paleomagnetic studies on the Hayang group. These results implied that conglomerate test was passed indicating no regional remagnetization in the studied area after deposition of the Silla Conglomerate Formation.

  • As a global response to climate and biodiversity challenges, there is an emphasis on the conservation and restoration of ecosystems that can simultaneously reduce carbon emissions and enhance biodiversity. This study comprised a text analysis and keyword extraction of 1,100 research papers addressing nature restoration in Korea, aiming to provide a quantative and systematic evaluation of domestic research trends in this field. To discern the major research topics of these papers, topic modeling was applied and correlations were established through network analysis. Research on nature restoration exhibited a mainly upward trend in 2002-2022 but with a slight recent decline. The most common keywords were "species," "forest," and "water". Research topics were broadly classified into (1) predictions of habitat size and species distribution, (2) the conservation and utilization of natural resources in urban areas, (3) ecosystems and landscape managements in protected areas, (4) the planting and growth of vegetation, and (5) habitat formation methods. The number of studies on nature restoration are increasing across various domains in Korea, with each domain experiencing professional development.

  • Ambient gas phase mercury concentrations including elemental mercury ($Hg^0$) were measured at the Potsdam, Stockton, and Sterling sites in NY from 2000 to 2003. Also, concentrations of ambient reactive gaseous mercury (RGM; $Hg^{2+}$) were measured at the Potsdam site during one year. The contribution of RGM($4.2{\pm}6.4pg/m^3$) was about $0.2{\sim}3%$ of the total gas phase mercury concentration measured (TGM: $1.84{\pm}1.24,\;1.83{\pm}0.32,\;3.02{\pm}2.14ng/m^3$ in Potsdam. Stockton, and Sterling, respectively) at the receptor sites. Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF), a hybrid receptor modeling incorporating backward trajectories was performed to identify source areas of TGM. Using PSCF, southern New York, North Carolina, and eastern Massachusetts were identified as important source areas in the United States, while the copper smelters and waste incinerators located in eastern Quebec and Ontario were determined to be significant sources in Canada. The Atlantic Ocean was suggested to be a possible mercury source. PSCF incorporating back-dispersion and deposition was applied for RGM , as well as PSCF based on 2-days back-trajectories. Two different approaches yielded considerably different results, primarily due to the consideration of dispersion rather than deposition. Using back-trajectory based PSCF, eastern Ohio, southern New York, and southern Pennsylvania where large coal -fired power plants area located were identified as the large sources in US. Metallurgical industry located in eastern Quebec was resolved as well. From the result of back-dispersion and deposition based PSCF, Pennsylvania, mining facilities around Lake Superior, Toronto, Boston, MA, Quebec, and coal power plants in NY were identified to be the significant source areas for Potsdam site.

  • The 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake ($M_L$ 5.8) (occurred on September 12, 2016) and the 2017 Pohang Earthquake ($M_L$ 5.4) (occurred on November 15, 2017) caused unprecedented damages in South Korea. It is necessary to establish basic data related to earthquake-induced mountainous sediment-related disasters over worldwide. In this study, we analyzed previous international studies on the earthquake-induced mountainous sediment-related disasters, then classified research areas according to research themes using text-mining and co-word analysis in VOSviewer program, and finally examined spatio-temporal research trends by research area. The result showed that the related-researches have been rapidly increased since 2005, which seems to be affected by recent large-scale earthquakes occurred in China, Taiwan and Japan. In addition, the research area related to mountainous sediment-related disasters induced by earthquakes was classified into four subjects: (i) mechanisms of disaster occurrence; (ii) rainfall parameters controlling disaster occurrence; (iii) prediction of potential disaster area using aerial and satellite photographs; and (iv) disaster risk mapping through the modeling of disaster occurrence. These research areas are considered to have a strong correlation with each other. On the threshold year (i.e., 2012-2013), when cumulative number of research papers was reached 50% of total research papers published since 1987, proportions per unit year of all research areas should increase. Especially, the proportion of the research areas related to prediction of potential disaster area using aerial and satellite photographs is highly increased compared to other three research areas. These trends are responsible for the rapidly increasing research papers with study sites in China, and the research papers examined in Taiwan, Japan, and the United States have also contributed to increases in all research areas. The results are could be used as basic data to present future research direction related to mountainous sediment-related disasters induced by earthquakes in South Korea.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic data for classifying patterns of land creep in 37 areas in South Korea using geological and soil property analyses. Geological time, as it relates to land creep areas in South Korea, had been most impactful for the Gyeongsang Supergroup and its sedimentary bedrock during the Cretaceous period. In this area, perfect ridge cliffs in land creeping areas included 20 plots (approximately 54.0%), while tension cracking areas with ambiguous ridge cliff characteristics included 17 plots (approximately 46.0%). Hesitant slide slope types included 20 plots (approximately 54.0%) within theslide slope of an incident pattern (slide slope figure) in land creeping areas. Colluvial debris types among land creep patterns were the most frequent and included 25 plots (approximately 68.0%). The direct causes of land creep were cutting of foothills, quarrying, land-clearing in mountains, mining exploration, and the creation of burial grounds, all of which added to geological impacts. Among land creeping areas, 27 plots (approximately 73.0%) were the result of man-made activities, and 10 plots (approximately 27.0%) were derived via natural causes such as earthquakes, heavy rainfall, and caving.

  • The mining of assciation rules disovers the trndency of events ocuring simultaneously in large databases. Previous announced research on association rules deals with associations with associations with respect to the whole transaction. However, xome association rules could have very high confidence in a sub-range of the time domain, even though they do not have quite high confidence in the whole time domain. Such kind of association rules are ecpected to be very usdful in various decion making problems. In this paper, we define transient association rule, as an association with high cimfidence worthy of special attention in a partial time interval, and propose an dfficeint algorithm wich finds out the time intervals appropriate to transient association rules from large-databases.We propose the data-driven retrival method excluding unecessary interval search, and design an effective data structure manageable in main memory obtined by one scanning of database, which offers the necessary information to next retrieval phase. In addition, our simulation shows that the suggested algorithm has reliable performance at the time cost acceptable in application areas.

  • The development of drought index that provides detailed-spatial-resolution drought information is essential for improving drought planning and preparedness. The objective of this study was to develop the concept of using satellite-based hybrid drought index called the Vegetation Drought Response Index in South Korea (VegDRI-SKorea) that could improve spatial resolution for monitoring local and regional drought. The VegDRI-SKorea was developed using the Classification And Regression Trees (CART) algorithm based on remote sensing data such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from MODIS satellite images, climate drought indices such as Self Calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (SC-PDSI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the biophysical data such as land cover, eco region, and soil available water capacity. A case study has been done for the 2012 drought to evaluate the VegDRI-SKorea model for South Korea. The VegDRI-SKorea represented the drought areas from the end of May and to the severe drought at the end of June. Results show that the integration of satellite imageries and various associated data allows us to get improved both spatially and temporally drought information using a data mining technique and get better understanding of drought condition. In addition, VegDRI-SKorea is expected to contribute to monitor the current drought condition for evaluating local and regional drought risk assessment and assisting drought-related decision making.

  • Ground water samples were collected from residential, green" industrial, landfill and mining area and analyzed for 23 inorganics from March to October in 2002. The results are as follows; 1. The detection frequencies of inorganic materials such as As, Ba, B, Mo, Ca, Mg, Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Na, K were 7.2∼77.1% which showed that these inorganics were detected in many ground waters. 2. The detection frequencies of 7 inorganics(Cd, Cr, Ph, Se, Sb, Be, Tl) were commonly low at ranging from 0.42 to 2.5%. These inorganics were contained in ground water partially. 3. Three inorganics such as Hg, Ni, Ag were not detected in any ground-water samples. 4. Compared to the other areas, ground water samples from landfill area contained greater concentration in many inorgainics and then showed higher levels in industral, residential, mining and green area in order. 5. Compared to noted concentrations of bottled water, inorganic minerals including Ca, Mg, Na, K related to taste were fluent in target samples. The results showed that the average concentrations of Mg, Na, K were 4.0 mg/l, 14.7 mg/l, 1.5 mg/l respectively. 6. The concentrations of inorganics such as Sb, Ba, Mo, Be, Tl, K in some ground water samples exceeded the water quality standards of WHO, the US and UK. Especially, Ba, Mo, K also showed relatively high detection frequencies so these inorganics need to be considered as analytes in Korea Drinking Water Regulation in further study.
