  • Statistical process control techniques have been greatly implemented in industries for improving product quality and saving production costs. As a primary tool among these techniques, control charts are widely used to detect the occurrence of assignable causes. In most works on the control charts it considered the problem of monitoring the mean and variance, and the quality characteristic of interest is normally distributed. In some situations monitoring of the minimum and maximum values is more important and the quality characteristic of interest is the Weibull distribution rather than a normal distribution. In this paper, we consider the statistical design of minimum and maximum control charts when the distribution of the quality characteristic of interest is Weibull. The proposed minimum and maximum control charts are applied to the wind data. The results of the application show that the proposed method is more effective than traditional methods.

  • In adaptive control, the lack of persistent and rich excitation causes the estimated parameters to drift, which degrade the performance of the system and may introduces instability to the system in a stochastic environment. To solve the problem of the parameter drift, the concept of single parameter adaptation is presented. For the parameter identification, a priori error is directly used for adaptation error. The structure of the controller is based upon the minimum variance control technique. The stability and robustness analysis is carried out by the sector stability theorem for the second order system. The computer simulation is performed to justify the theoretical analysis for the various cases.

  • In this paper, a multi-channel speech enhancement method using the linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) algorithm and a variable learning rate control is proposed. To control the learning rate for adaptive filters of the LCMV algorithm, the direction of arrival (DOA) is measured for each short-time input signal and the likelihood function of the target speech presence is estimated to control the filter learning rate. Using the likelihood measure, the learning rate is increased during the pure noise interval and decreased during the target speech interval. To optimize the parameter of the mapping function between the likelihood value and the corresponding learning rate, an exhaustive search is performed using the Bark's scale distortion (BSD) as the performance index. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional LCMV with fixed learning rate in the BSD by around 1.5 dB.

  • In this paper, a DC converter to improve the performance of Power LED system is discussed. The mathematical model of PWM converter power stage using 3-Terminal PWM cell is introduced for power LED system. A controller for DC converter system is used as a self-tunning regulator with a recursive least-squares algorithm. Minimum variance control method is used as a control law. Experiment results verified that proposed control system could improve the performance of Power LED system.

  • For a generalized minimum variance controller algorithm the weighting polynomials are are calculated in a way to assign the closed loop poles of the system and to specify the controller gain at a frequency. As a result the oscillations in the control signal may be reduced without changing the deterministic behaviour of the system.

  • An optimal controller, e.g. LQG controller, may not be realistic in the sense that the required control power may not be achieved by existing actuators, and the measured output is not satisfactory. To be realistic, the controller should meet such constraints as sensor or actuator limitation, performance limit, etc. In this paper, the lnput/Output Variance Constrained (IOVC) control problem will be considered from the viewpoint of mathematical programming. A dual version shall be developed to solve the IOVC control problem, whose objective is to find a stabilizing control law attaining a minimum value of a quadratic cost function subject to the inequality constraint on each input and output variance for a stabilizable and detectable plant. One approach to the constrained optimization problem is to use the Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions for the optimality and to seek an optimal point by an iterative algorithm. However, since the algorithm uses only the necessary conditions, the convergent point may not be optimal solution. Our algorithm will guarantee a sufficiency.

  • A novel flatness sensing system which is called the Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper(FlatSIL) system is suggested and a self-tuning PI control system using the FlatSIL is designed for improving the flatness of hot strip in finishing mill processes. The FlatSIL system measures the tension along the direction of the strip width by using segmented rolls, and the tension profile is approximated through the tension of each segmented roll. The flatness control system is operated by using the tension profile. The proposed flatness control system as far as the tension profile-measuring device works for the full strip length during the strip rolling in finishing mills. The generalized minimum variance self-tuning (GMV S-T) PI control method is applied to control the flatness of hot strip which has a design parameter as weighting factor for updating the PI gains. Optimizing the design parameter in the GMV S-T PI controller, the Robbins-Monro algorithm is used. It is shown by the computer simulation and experiment that the proposed GMV S-T PI flatness control system has better performance than the fixed PI flatness control system.

  • In this paper, finite impulse response (FIR) smoothers are proposed for discrete-time systems. The proposed FIR smoother is designed under the constraints of linearity, unbiasedness, FIR structure, and independence of the initial state information. It is also obtained by directly minimizing the performance criterion with unbiased constraints. The approach to the MVF smoother proposed in this paper is logical and systematic, while existing results have heuristic assumption, such as infinite covariance of the initial state. Additionally, the proposed MVF smoother is based on the general system model that may have the singular system matrix and has both system and measurement noises. Thorough simulation studies, it is shown that the proposed MVF smoother is more robust against modeling uncertainties numerical errors than fixed-lag Kalman smoother which is infinite impulse response (IIR) type estimator.

  • This paper describes two run-to-run controllers, a nonlinear multiple exponential-weight moving-average (NMEWMA) controller and a dynamic model-tuning minimum-variance (DMTMV) controller, for photolithography processes. The relationships between the input recipes (exposure dose and focus) and output variables (critical dimensions) were formed using an experimental design method, and the photolithography process model was built using a multiple regression analysis. Both the NMEWMA and DMTMV controllers could update the process model and obtain the optimal recipes for the next run. Quantified improvements were obtained from simulations and real photolithography processes.

  • This paper presents a class of discrete adaptive controller that can be applied to a plant without sufficient a priori information. It is well known that the GMV(Generalized Minmum Variance) contrlller performs satisfactorily if the plant time delay is known. By introducing the long-range prediction into the GMV controller, robustness to the time delay can be improved, although optimality is lost. Such an idea motivates a predictive control system to be proposed here, where the system minimizes multi-stage cost via the GMV approach. Moreover, the detuning control weight is determined by an on-line tuning method. It is shown that robustness, computational efficiency, and performance of the resulting control system are improved as compared with those of the GPC(Generalized Predictive Control)system.
