The typical design of ground improvement with prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) and surcharge preloading involves a series of deterministic analyses using averaged or mean soil properties for the various combination of the PVD spacing and surcharge preloading height that would meet the criteria for minimum consolidation time and required degree of consolidation. The optimum design combination is then selected in which the total cost of ground improvement is a minimum. Considering the variability and uncertainties of the soil consolidation parameters, as well as considering the effects of soil disturbance (smear zone) and drain resistance in the analysis, this study presents a stochastic cost optimization of ground improvement with PVD and surcharge preloading. Direct Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and importance sampling (IS) technique is used in the stochastic analysis by limiting the sampled random soil parameters within the range from a minimum to maximum value while considering their statistical distribution. The method has been verified in a case study of PVD improved ground with preloading, in which average results of the stochastic analysis showed a good agreement with field monitoring data.
Optimal design of the water supply pipe network aims to minimize construction cost while satisfying the required hydraulic constraints such as the minimum and maximum pressures, and velocity. Since considering one single design factor (i.e., cost) is very vulnerable for including future conditions and cannot satisfy operator's needs, various design factors should be considered. Hence, this study presents three kinds of design factors (i.e., minimizing construction cost, maximizing reliability, and surplus head) to perform multi-objective optimization design. Harmony Search (HS) Algorithm is used as an optimization technique. As well-known benchmark networks, Hanoi network and Gyeonggi-do P city real world network are used to verify the applicability of the proposed model. In addition, the proposed multi-objective model is also applied to a real water distribution networks and the optimization results were statistically analyzed. The results of the optimal design for the benchmark and real networks indicated much better performance compared to those of existing designs and the other approach (i.e., Genetic Algorithm) in terms of cost and reliability, cost, and surplus head. As a result, this study is expected to contribute for the efficient design of water distribution networks.
This paper presents an optimization of the reinforced concrete ribbed slab in terms of minimum CO2 emissions and an economic justification of the final optimal design. The design variables are six geometry variables including the slab thickness, the ribs spacing, the rib width at the lower and toper end, the depth of the rib and the bar diameter of the reinforcement, and the seventh variable defines the concrete strength. The objective function is considered to be the minimum amount of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) emission and at the same time, the optimal design is economical. Seven significant design constraints of American Concrete Institute's Standard were considered. A robust metaheuristic optimization method called improved dolphin echolocation and ant colony optimization (IDEACO) has been used to obtain the best possible answer. At optimal design, the three most important sources of CO2 emissions include concrete, steel reinforcement, and formwork that the contribution of them are 63.72, 32.17, and 4.11 percent respectively. Formwork, concrete, steel reinforcement, and CO2 are the four most important sources of cost with contributions of 67.56, 19.49, 12.44, and 0.51 percent respectively. Results obtained by IDEACO show that cost and CO2 emissions are closely related, so the presented method is a practical solution that was able to reduce the cost and CO2 emissions simultaneously.

Normal strategy of structure optimization procedure has been minimum cost or weight design. Minimum weight design satisfying an allowable stress has been used for the ship and offshore structure, but minimum cost design could be used for the case of high human cost. Natural frequency analysis and forced vibration one have been used for the strength estimation of marine structures. For the case of high precision experiment facilities in marine field, the structure has normally enough margin in allowable stress aspect and sometimes needs high natural frequency of structure to obtain very high precise experiment results. It is not easy to obtain a structure design with high natural frequency, since the natural frequency depend on the stiffness to mass ratio of the structure and increase of structural stiffness ordinary accompanies the increase of mass. It is further difficult at the grillage structure design using the profiles, because the properties of profiles are not continuous but discrete, and resource of profiles are limited at the design of grillage structure. In this paper, the grillage structure design system under the constraint of high natural frequency is introduced. The design system adopted genetic algorithm to realize optimization procedure and can be used at the design of the experimental facilities of marine field such as a towing carriage, PMM, test frame, measuring frame and rotating arm.

This study is intended to propose a systematic and practical life cycle cost(LCC) model for the development of the reliability-based seismic safety and cost-effective performance criteria for design and upgrading of long-span PC bridges. The LCC models consist of five cost functions such as initial cost, repair/replacement cost, human losses, road user cost, and indirect losses of regional economy. The proposed model Is successfully expressed in temrs of Park-Ang damage indices and life cycle damage probability obtained from SMART-DRAIN-2DX which is an existing algorithm for nonlinear time history analysis. The proposed LCC model is successfully applied to a viaduct constructed by PSM, in Seoul. Based on the observations, the proposed systematic procedure for the formulation of LCC model may be useful for the development of the reliability-based seismic safety and cost-effective performance criteria for design and upgrading of long-span PC bridges.

This paper descrides on the economical design of apartment house. * The optimal problems are made by considering the objective function which minimize the construction cost of frame. * The object functions are taken as the codfficient equations of the cost function for a unit area. * Constraints are the design limits defined by the ultimate flexural strength, the ultimate shear strength. the minimum thickness, and the ratio of steel in accordance with ACI 318-89 Code. * Optimization is achieved by optimum nonlinear GINO(General interactive Optimizer)program. In design examples, it is compared with the optimum design results of apartment house and underground parking lot for structural systems.
We study the problem of designing at minimum cost a two-connected network topology such that the shortest cycle to which each edge belongs does not exceed a given maximum number of hops. This problem is considered as part of network planning and arises in the design of backbone networks. We propose a genetic algorithm approach that uses a solution representation, in which the connectivity and ring constraints can be easily encoded. We also propose a crossover operator that ensures a generated solution is feasible. By doing so, the checking of constraints is avoided and no repair mechanism is required. We carry out experimental evaluations to investigate the solution representation issues and GA operators for the network design problem.

Since 1980's, optimum design techniques for ship structural design have been developed to the preliminary design which aims at minimum weight or minimum cost design of mid-ship section based on analytic structural analysis. But the optimum structural design researches about the application for the detail design of local structure based on FEA have been still insufficient. This paper presents optimization technique for the detail design of a racing motor boat. To improve the performance and reduce the damage of a real existing racing boat, direct structural analyses; static and non-linear transient dynamic analyses, were carried out to check the constraints of minimum weight design. As a result, it is shown that the optimum structural design of a racing boat has to be focused on reducing impulse response from pitching motion than static response because the dynamic effect is more dominant. Optimum design algorithm based on nonlinear finite element analysis for a racing motor boat was developed and coded to ANSYS, and its applicability for actual structural design was verifed.

Present worth was used as an assessment criteria of the economical efficiency. And Pareto optimal set was used to have the optimum design.
This paper presents a design and analyzes the performance of a hospital assignment and reassignment scheme for emergency rescue services based on minimum cost maximum flow algorithm. It consists of flow graph building, link capacity updating, and allocation discovering steps. The efficiency of the algorithm makes it possible to reallocate hospitals even in case of dynamic changes in the number of patients or hospitals. The performance measurement result obtained from a prototype implementation shows that the proposed scheme can reduce the transport time requirement miss by up to 24%.
