Although the use of pottery-making soils has a long history, its use in the pottery industry requires that physical and geotechnical properties of the materials be established to define the suitability for various purposes. The main purpose of this study is to identify the different types of clays and mineral composition and to perform the geotechnical evaluation of the clays for making pottery products. Soils investigated in this study include raw materials used for making Baekja (white porcelains), Chungja (celadons), Buncheong, Sancheong, and Johyung. Pottery-making soils are manufactured by using different types of soils and sold by individual ceramic clay company. This study includes physical tests of soil and chemical analysis of major elements using XRF and XRD instrumentation. Grain size distributions, mineralogical composition, and a range of plasticities of soils for making different types of potteries are presented. Correlations between specific type of pottery clays and geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics are determined by comparing the test results. Since quantitative research using laboratory tests for pottery-making soils are rarely performed in Korea, further research should be done in the future to improve the Korean pottery industry.

This study investigated mineralogy, spectral characteristics and heavy metal contamination including Cd, Ni, Al, Fe, Mn and S for white precipitation in Miin falls based on XRF, XRD, and spectrometer. As a result, Al concentration was abnormally high at all samples, and most of the samples showed high contamination level in Cd and Ni. XRD results detected quartz, kaolinite, rhomboclase, aluminocoquimbite, and gibbsite which infers that heavy metal elements are distributed by adsorption with clay minerals. Spectral characteristics of white precipitation can be described by increasing pattern of reflectance in visible spectrum and decreasing pattern of reflectance in longer wave length including near infrared and shortwave infrared spectrum. The absorption features reveals that spectral characteristics of white precipitation is mainly controlled by kaolinite, rhomboclase, aluminocoquimbite, and gibbsite. The relationship between heavy metal concentration and absorption depth showed high positive correlation for Al concentration and absorption feature at 2202 nm of Al-OH absorption. This spectral characteristics indicates that absorption depth could be effectively used for estimation of heavy metal concentration.
The weathering characteristics of periodically submerged sedimentary rocks in the Sayeon dam, Ulsan was examined by field work, electron probe micro-analysis, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Analysis of fracture zone and exfoliation showed the submerged sedimentary rocks have undergone severe mechanical weathering. Mechanical weathering in the water-rock interface accelerated chemical weathering, such as dissolution and alteration of the most of minerals except for quartz in the weathering zone. The dissolution of carbonates specially calcite, is remarkable creating the cavities, whereas formation of minerals including clay minerals is not active. The sedimentary rocks have been periodically submerged for a certain period of time, and have repeated freezing and thawing. This mechanical weathering favored infiltration, which accelerated mineral dissolution. The high content of easily soluble carbonate of the sedimentary rocks is likely the major cause of intense chemical weathering. The dissolved elements within the infiltrated water interrupted the occurrence of clay and weathering minerals, and expend fractures by infiltrated water accelerated weathering process.
In this study, X-ray diffraction, ICP analysis, and leaching experiments were performed to analyze the heavy metals and dissolution characteristics of Andong dam sediments. As a result of X-ray diffraction analysis, Andong dam sediment consists of quartz, plagioclase, chlorite and illite. ICP analysis of sediment showed very high concentrations of As and Cd. Leaching experiments were performed in aerobic and anaerobic condition in a disturbed state. The results of leaching experiment showed that more heavy metals were leached in aerobic than anaerobic conditions. Heavy metal that increased in concentration with time in aerobic conditions were Mn, Zn and Cd, and those in anaerobic conditions were Mn, Fe and As. The leaching ratio of heavy metal concentration in sediment was Mn > Cd > Zn > Ni > Cu > As > Pb ≒ Fe ≒ Cr and Mn > As > Cu > Ni > Zn > Pb ≒ Cd ≒ Fe ≒ Cr in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively.
A series of settling tests and physico-chemical property tests on Saemankeum fine-cohesive sediments has been conducted in order to investigate the correlation between settling properties and their physico-chemical properties which are represented as grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, and percentage of organic contents. Experimental results of physico-chemical property tests show that Saemankeum sediments are relatively large in average grain size(52${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and contain very small organic materials(2%), and are dominantly composed of Quarts in mineralogical aspect which has relatively low cohesion. Thus, Saemankeum sediments might be specified as the sediments whose settling properties are more influenced by the gravity than the cohesion. This characteristics of Saemankeum sediments are found to lead to relatively small settling velocity in flocculated settling region in which increasing cohesion results in increasing settling velocity, while relatively large settling velocity in hindered settling region in which settling velocity decreases with increasing cohesion.
The area of this study is located in the Sang dong district, Youngwol Gun, Kangwon Do, where the Ogcheon fold belt comes into contact with the Ryongnam massif. The area is covered by the Precambrian metasedimentary rocks of Yulri Group in the south from the line of Ungyosan-Maebongsan-Jansan-Taebaegsan Mountains and by the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of Choseon Supergroup in the north. The Choseon Supergroup unconformably overlies the Yulri group. Several granitic intrusives occur in the Precambrian and Cambro-Ordovician terrain. The purpose of this study is to clarify the geochronology, mineralogical composition, geochemical characteristics, petrogenesis and tectonic settings of the Precambrian granitic rocks, and to evaluate the P.T. conditions of granitic intrusions. The K/Ar ages obtained from the muscovite of Nonggeori Granite, Naedeogri granite and pegmatite intruded into the Yulri Group are Early Proterozoic ($1805{\pm}18Ma$ to $1642{\pm}23Ma$), and those from the migmatitic pegmatite are Late Carboniferous ($305{\pm}4Ma$), respectively. The Precambrian granitic rocks are characterized by the presence of muscovite, tourmaline and grey feldspar with faint lineation of mafic minerals. In terms of mineralogical and chemical composition, the granitic rocks are felsic, calc-alkalic, peraluminous and S-type (ilmenite-series). The geochemical characteristics of major and trace elements indicate that the granitic rocks belong to syn-collision setting at the compressional plate margin. They were formed by progressive melting of relatively homogeneous crustal materials under 1~3kb and $670^{\circ}{\sim}720^{\circ}C$ in aqueous fluid conditions, and the Naedeogri granite was more fractionated than the Nonggeori granite. During the Taebaeg disturbance, Nonggeori granite, Naedeogri granite and pegmatite were intruded and emplaced into the Yulri Group. Migmatitic pegmatite occurring in the southwestern area, however, gave much younger muscovite age than the pegmatite intruded into the Yulri Group in rest of the area did, that might be due to the regional metamorphism of the Post-Choseon disturbance. The Geodo granitic mass and the Imog granite were intruded during the Bulgugsa disturbance.
First reported geochemical characteristics of mantle xneoliths (spinel peridotites) from Sunheul-ri, Jeju Island, provide important clues for understanding the lithosphere composition, equilibrium temperature, and the period of entrainment and transport of the xenoliths in the host magma. Core and rim of mineral phases in the xenoliths are constant chemical compositions as $Fo_{89-90}$ of olivines. The ranges of equilibrium temperature, obtained by two pyroxenes geothermometer, are about $951{\sim}1035^{\circ}C$ for Sunheul-ri spinel peridotite xenoliths and are similar to the range of equilibrium temperatures for the xenoliths from other sites in Jeju island. The period of entrainment and transport of the xenoliths in the host magma of Sunheul-ri mantle xenoliths is about 42 days.
Notable characteristics are found between diamond types and observed optical properties from the analysis of natural diamonds in market as a gem mineral. All of the diamond samples observed are classified into type Ia, which can be subdivided type IaA containing only A aggregates, type IaB containing only B aggregates, and type IaAB containing both A aggregates and B aggregates in detail. As B aggregates more relatively increase than A aggregates. It is possible to find out that an increase of N3 center, an enhancement of blue fluorescence reaction, and an intensification of irregularity in the strain pattern. Because the property change of diamond mentioned above are consistent with optical phenomenon caused by dislocation and with N3 center produced by changes of nitrogen aggregation process from A aggregate to B aggregate. There is a close relation between diamond type and optical properties.
This study has been carried out in order to examine the precipitation characteristics of Fe, Mn and Al ions in coal mine drainage before removing heavy metals by using the froth flotation method. The removal rate of Fe(III), Mn(II) and Al(III) within 1 h accounted for over 99% in pH 5.0, 10.0, and $6.0{\sim}9.0$ respectively, and residual concentrations of which were under $1mgL^{-1}$. When sodium oleate as a collector was added to the solution of Fe, Mn, and Al ions, insoluble salts was not formed by the reaction of heavy metal and sodium oleate. So, we must remove the metals from coal mine drainage by using not the ion flotation method, but the precipitation flotation method
Characteristics of thermophilic bacteria and secondary materials on the pyrrhotite surface were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermophilic bacteria from an acid hot spring in Japan were incubated with pyrrhotite at $42^{\circ}C$, $52^{\circ}C$, and $62^{\circ}C$ respectively. SEM analysis of the reacted pyrrhotite showed that indigenous rod-shaped bacteria ranging from $0.4{\times}1.5{\mu}m$ to $0.3{\times}11.9{\mu}m$ in size were attached to the pyrrhotite surface at these temperatures with formation of secondary materials. Extracellular polymer substances were formed on the bacterial surface. We suggest that these polymers functioned as a capsule protecting bacteria from the extreme environment. Secondary materials such as elemental sulfur, Fe-hydroxide, S-Fe and O-P-Fe compounds were found on the pyrrhotite surface.
