Metallic deposits in Korea have a variety of genetic types such as hydrothermal veins, skarns, hydrothermal replacement and alaskite deposits and so on. Geological, mineralogical and geochemical features including host rock, wall-rock alteration, ore and gangue mineralogy, mineral texture and secondary mineralogy related to weathering process control the environmental signatures of mining areas. The environmental signatures of metallic deposits closed from early 1970s to late 1990s in Korea show complicate geochemistry and mineralogy due to step weathering of primary and secondary minerals such as oxidation-precipitation-remobilization. The potentiality of low pH and high heavy metal Concentration s from acid mine drainage is great in base-metal deposits associated with polymetallic mineralization, breccia-pipe type and Cretaceous hydrothermal Au veins with the amount of pyrite whereas skam, hydrothermal replacement, hydrothermal Cu and Au-Ag vein deposits are in low contamination possibility. The geoenvironmental models reflecting the various geologic features closely relate to disuibution of sulfides and carbonates and their ratios and finally effect on characteristics of environmental signatures such as heavy metal species and their concentrations in acid mine drainage.
Fly ashes derived from coal fired power plants have unique chemical and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this research was to study how indigenous bacteria affected heavy metal leaching in fly ash slurry during the fly ash-seawater interactions in the ash pond located in Yeongdong seashore, Korea. The in-situ pH of ash pond seawater was 6.3-8.5. For this study, three sites of the ash pond were chosen to collect a sample of fly ash slurry. Three samples that had a mix of fly ash (0.4 L) and seawater (1.6 L) were collected at each site. First sample was autoclaved ($120^{\circ}C$, 2.5 atm), second one was inoculated with glucose to stimulate the microbial activity, and the last sample was kept in the natural condition. Compared with other samples including autoclaved and natural samples, the glucose added sample showed sharp increase in its alkalinity after 15 days, cation concentration change such as Ca, Mg, and K seemed to increase in early stage, and then decrease 15 days later in slurry solution of glucose added sample, and a possibly considerable decrease in $SO_4^{2-}$ in the fly ash slurry samples when glucose was added to stimulate the microbial activity. Geochemical data of this study is likely to be related to the activity of bacteria at the ash pond. The result may be used to understand about the characteristic of bacteria.
The Sunrise Dam gold deposit is located approximately 850 km ENE of Perth, in the eastern part of the Yilgam Craton, Western Australia. The mine has produced approximately 153 t of Au at an average grade of 4.2 g/t, which stands for the most significant gold discoveries during the last decade in Western Australia. The deposit occurs in the Laverton Tectonic Zone corresponding to the corridor of structural complexity in the Laverton greenstone belt, and characterized by tight folding and thrusting. The mine stratigraphy consists of a complexly deformed and altered volcaniclastic and volcanic rocks. These have been overlain by a turbidite sequence containing generally well-sorted siltstones, sandstones and magnetite-rich shales, which are consistently fining upwards. These sequences have been intruded by quartz diorite, ultramafic dikes, and rhyodacite porphyry (Archean), and lamprophyre dikes (Palaeoproterozoic). These rocks constitute the asymmetric NNE-trending Spartan anticline with north-plunging thrust duplication of the BIF unit. The deposit is located on the western limb of this structure. Transported, fluvial-lacustrine and aeolean sediments lie unconformably over the deposit showing significant variation in relief. Gold mineralization occurs intermittently along a NE-trending corridor of ca. 4.5 km length. The 20 currently defined orebodies are centered on a series of parallel, gently-dipping ($\sim30^{\circ}$) and NESW trending shear zones with a thrust-duplex architecture and high-strain characteristics. The paragenetic sequence of the Sunrise Dam deposit can be divided into five hydrothermal stages ($D_1$, $D_2$, $D_3$, $D_4a$, $D_4b$), which are supported by distinctive features of the mineralogical assemblages. Among them, the D4a stage is the dominant episode of Au deposition, followed by the $D_4b$ stage, which is characterized by more diverse ore mineralogy including base metal sulfides, sulfosalts, and telluride minerals. The $D_4a$ stage contains higher proportions of microscopic free gold (48%) than D4b stage (12%), and pyrite is the principal host for native gold (electrum) followed by tetrahedrite-group minerals in both stages.
The sediment collected from KODOS91-1 were studied using X-ray diffraction(SRD) analysis to clarify the composition and vertical distribution of clay minerals. Micropaleontological data(Radiolarians) was applied to identify the changes in post-depositional environment and chemical mechanism leading to the formation of authigenic minerals. The result show that the highest concentration of smectite is occurred in the lower part(Unit II, III) of sediment column and the lowest concentration in the upper part(Unit I) whereas terrestrial minerals, such as illite, kaolinite and quartz, indicate the opposite trends. Radiolarians in the upper part are composed entirely of Quaternary/Tertiary mixtures, whereas in lower sediment units generally revealed the middle Miocene to the Eocene. This may imply that the Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary processes were continuously affected by reworking of older sediments and subsequent resegmentation. The changes of the sediment color, peak pattern of minerals and presence of reworked microfossils at the unit boundaries have been interpreted as evidence of authigenic formation. Mineralogical characteristics of the sediments in study area strongly indicates changes in paleoenvironments through geologic time, including changes in post-depositional conditions by physical processes and chemical mechanisms.

The mineral medicines mean a sort of mineral or rock for medical treatment and natural material using their chemical components and physical properties. In this study, it was apprehended the mineralogical characteristics of As-bearing group mineral medicines. The extraction test is an vitro test system for predicting the bioavailability of the major and minor elements from mineral medicines and incorporates gastrointestinal tract parameters representative of a human(including stomach and small intestinal pH, stomach mixing time and velocity). The results of the extraction test are used for reaction path modeling in human body. Reaction path modeling in human body can predict digestion with gastric juice as well as bioavailability, speciation. Also, it can predict accumulation of arsenic as pH condition. As the results of the extraction test for digestion, the amounts of Fe extraction was the highest, followed by As, Ca, Ni. In addition, as the results of the reaction path modeling between arsenic compounds and gastric juice using thermodynamic data, when absorbed, major species are followed by H₃As₃S/sub 6/(aq), As₃S/sub 6/ (aq), AsO/sup +/, H₂As₃S/sup 6-/, H₂AsO/sup 3-/, HAs₃S6/sup 2-/, HAsO/sub 3//sup 2-/ and AsO/sub 3//sup 3-/. Specifically the concentration of H₃As₃S/sub 6/(aq) is the highest. As pH increases, the concentration of H₂AsO/sup 3-/, HAsO/sub 3//sup 2-/, HAsO/sub 3//sup 3-/, HAs₃S/sub 6//sup 2-/, H₂As₃S/sup 6-/, and H₃As₃S/sub 6/ increases, whereas the concentration of H₃As₃S/sub 6/ and AsO/sup +/ decreases. On the results of this study, it is able to find out effective and toxic components of poisonous arsenic group of mineral medicines and expected to be widely used for the development of new medicines.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of obtaining high grade coal from fixed carbon 20.68% coal. Also, the mineralogical, physical/chemical and liberation characteristics was found with the aim of decrease in ash amount, during the pre-processing of clean coal technology. In this study, batch flotation and microbubble column flotation that was appropriate for the processing of fine particles was used with the variation in kinds and quantity of frother, collector and depressant. Also grinding time, air flow rate and feeding rates were examined. As a result of batch flotation, using pulp density 20%, collector DMU-101+dodecyl amine(100 mL/ton), frother pine oil (200 mL/ton), depressant sodium silicate(1 kg/ton), obtained the result of ash rejection 81.55% and combustible recovery 70.23%. In result of microbubble column flotation, the result was ash rejection 83.85% and combustible recovery 70.42% under the condition of pulp density 5%, grinding time 5 min. collector DMU-101+DDA(100 mL/ton), frother AF65(5.4 L/ton), depressant SMP(3.5 kg/ton), wash water(360 mL/min.) and air flow rate(1,197 mL/min.).
The present paper is a part of a study aimed at gaining information on the origin, mode of deposition, and characteristics of volcanic soils in Jeju. Volcanic activity of Jeju island has extremely influenced on the formation of various soils. Polysequum phenomenon of soils is one of outstanding soil genesis in Jeju. The typical polysequum soils was collected and analyzed by morphological, physico-chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological approaches The results are as follows: 1. The soils consists of polysequa, A and B horizons from volcanic ashes, unconsolidated volcanic sand layer and B(I) horizons from residual basalts. 2. The lithological discontinuity is also very distinct; silt loam from volcanic ashes, sand (II) from volcanic sand and clayey (III) from basalts. 3. Volcanic sand layer seems to be influenced by lava flow. The properties of it are similar to volcanic ashes rather than beneath residuum in micromorphological aspects. In micromorphological, this layer is gradually changed into soils. 4. Dominant clay minerals are allophane in A and B horizons from volcanic ashes and kaoline, vermiculite and illite from residual basalts. 5. The soils are not developed. There is no formation of argillic horizon in subsurface layers.
This study was conducted to characterize the chemical and mineralogical properties of representative phosphate rocks from North Carolina and Florida, and to find out the method for increasing the citric acid (two percent) solublility of phosphate rock. The the results are summerized as follows : 1. Major composition of phosphate rock was carbonate apatite containing small amounts of calcite and quartz. The differential thermal analysis(DTA) did not show endothermic or exothermic peak till $1,000^{\circ}C$. 2. Two percent citric acid solublility of phosphate rock was increased with the finess of particle size, but the water solublility was not affected by the particle size. Long time calcinated under high temperature had negative effect, while the incubation with 2% citric acid under low temperature had positive effect on solubility. 3. To increase the solubility of phosphate rock it was mixed with farmyard and barnyard manure and acidulated. Citrate solubility by treatment with sulfuric acid was more effective than nitric acid. Acidulation with thirty percent sulfuric acid increased both citric acid solubility and water solublility. Treatment with glutamic acid had little effect on the solubility of phosphate rock.
It is known that coal-derived fly ashes have the unique chemical composition and mineralogical characteristics. Since iron oxides in coal fly ash are enriched with heavy metals, the subsurface media including soils, underground water, and sea water are highly likely contaminated with heavy metals when the heavy metals are leached from fly ashes by water-fly ash interactions. The purpose of this study was to investigate how indigenous bacteria affect heavy metal leaching and mineralogy in fly ash slurry during the fly ash-seawater interactions in the ash pond located in Dangjin seashore, Korea. The average pH of ash pond seawater was 8.97 in nature. Geochemical data showed that microbial activity sharply increased after the 7th day of the 60-day course batch experiments. Compared with other samples including autoclaved and natural samples, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ was likely to decrease considerably in the fly ash slurry samples when glucose was added to stimulate the microbial activity. Geochemical data including Eh/pH, alkalinity, and major and trace elements showed that the bacteria not only immobilize metals from the ash pond by facilitating the chemical reaction with Mn, Fe, and Zn but may also be able to play an important role in sequestration of carbon dioxide by carbonate mineral precipitation.
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the chemical changes and formation of sulfur minerals following reduction and subsequent oxidation of the acid sulfate soils derived from the fluvio-marine plains in Gimhae area. Changes in pH, Eh and water soluble $SO_4$, Fe, Al, K, na and Ca were determined in the soil under the reduced and oxidized conditions. These chemical properties were related to the formation of the pyrite and jarosite, the major sulfur minerals in the acid sulfate soils. On incubation, suspension pH tended to increase with decreaseing Eh in the reduction periods. Jarosite formation was favored by maintaining continuous low pH(below 4.0) and high Eh(above 400mV) during the oxidation periods, however, the conditions were not favorable for the soils with $Ca(OH)_2$. Water soluble K increased by reduction but decreased by oxidation, while the jarosite of the soil with $Ca(OH)_2$ was dissolved even under the oxidation conditon, resulting in rapid increase of water soluble K. The water soluble Ca decreased rapidly, indicating that gypsum was formed with $Ca(OH)_2$ during the oxidation periods. The formation of jarosite was favored by the oxidation condition, and hindered by the reduction condition. But the formation of pyrite was favored by reduction and hindered by oxidation. When the troll was treated with $Ca(OH)_2$, Jarosite was dissolved in both oxidized and reduced conditions.
