The purpose of present study was to assess the change of bone mineral density(BMD) and the influences of anthroopometric indices and body composition on BMD in Korean women in Taegu. Subjects were 242 healthy female in the range of 7-67 years old, were divided into 4 age groups in order to assess the influence o factors on BMD according to age. Body composition and BMD measurements of lumbar spine, femur(neck, ward's triangle, trochanter) and total body were performed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The analysis indicated that BMD of most region was positively related to body weight, BMI in all groups 4(50-67years), and closely related to femurs than lumbar spine. This study found correlations between BMD and both total fat body mass and total lean body mass in group 1, 2, 3, and correlations between BMD and only total fat body mass and in group 4. But on regression models the most significant prediction of BMD throughout the skeleton was total lean body mass in group 1(7-16years)and 2(17-34years, and total fat body mass in group 3 and 4. It is concluded that the our data can be used to screen early women of low bone mass. This study confirms that one of the most effective way to prevent osteoporosis and the fractures is to maximize peak bone mass in early life and to minimize bone loss through maintaining adequate weight.
The study was conducted to investigate the factors associated with bone mineral content (BMC) changes among early pubertal aged girls. Two hundred and thirty girls between 9 to 11 years of age participated in (our surveys over 2 year period. During each survey, dietary intakes were collected with 3-day food records, BMC of left leg's calcaneus were measured by PIXI (Lunar Ltd.) and body composition was measured by bioimpedance method (Inbody 3.0 Biospace Co. Ltd, Seoul, Korea). Mean values of BMC increased in consecutive measurements -1.48 g, 1.54 g, 1.61 g and 1.66 g. The change of BMC between the first and last measurements was significantly positively correlated with % body fat, negatively correlated with BMC at the baseline (p < 0.05). Change of BMC was also significantly positively correlated with % change of lean mass and mineral mass between the first and last measurements. Nutrient intakes during the study period were calculated as mean daily intakes from all surveys. Mean daily intakes of Vit. C and Vit. $B_6$ were positively and isoflavone intake was negatively correlated with changes of BMC (p < 0.05). In stepwise regression of BMC change with body composition and nutrient intakes, baseline values of BMC, weight, BMI and age, % change of mineral mass during the study period, mean intakes of isoflavone, Vit. $B_6$, protein, carotene and zinc were significant explanatory variables ($R^2=0.38$, p <.001, F = 32.39). The results imply that the change of BMC among early pubertal aged girls are associated with some body composition and intakes of certain nutrients.

Titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles were prepared by the oxidation of titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) in a diffusion flame reactor. The average diameter of particles was 15 to 30 nm and mass fraction of anatase ranged from $40\;to\;80\%$. Effects of particle size and phase composition of those $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on photocatalytic properties such as decomposition of methylene blue and bacteria gas were investigated. The degree of decomposition of methylene blue by the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under the illumination of the black light was directly proportional to the anantase mass fraction, but inversely to the particle size. The decomposition of bacteria by the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under the illumination of the fluorescent light showed the same trend as in the case of the methylene blue.
Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate how Bone Mineral Density(BMD) and bone mass index(BMI) differ according to classification of blood pressure which JNC 7(The seventh report of the joint national committee on prevention, detection, evaluation and treatment of high blood pressure) indicated. Methods : We measured BMD and BMI of lumbar spine($L_2-L_4$) and femoral neck of 9816 people, and then we analyzed them according to classification of blood pressure. Results : The number of prehypertension group was the most, and Stage 2 hypertension group was the least. As the hypertension was increasing, BMD of lumbar and femoral neck were decreasing, and BMI was increasing. In men, as the blood pressure was increasing, BMI was increasing. But the BMD was irrelevant. In women, the distribution was similar to the total. Conclusions : As the hypertension was increasing, BMI was increasing and BMD was decreasing. And it was more remarkable in women.
The relationship between bone mineral density and the environmental factors were investigated from the view point of preventing osteoporosis in Korean pubescent girls. The effects of calcium, nutrient intake, physical activity on total bone mineral density, lumbar spine and femoral bone mineral density and total bone mineral content were evaluated 33 healthy pubescent girls aged 14∼16y. A convenient method was used to assess nutritional and energy intake and calcium index was used together. Calcium intake in childhood was estimated by asking whether subjects usually drank milk as children. Eating habits data and history of menstruation were obtained by questionnaire and interview. Average energy expenditure was calculated. Bone mineral density and content were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry using a Lunar DPX+Scanner (Lunar, Madison, WI). The lumbar spine(L2∼L4) and three sites in the proximal femur (femoral neck, trochanteric region, and Ward's triangle)were measured. Height and weight were measured, and the body mass index(BMI) was derived from the formula : BMI=kg/㎡ Statistical analysis was performed by simple correlation using the SAS package. The mean calcium intake (736mg) was below the RDA of 800mg/d. Twelve percent of the total subjects did not drink milk at all because they did not like the taste. Skipping meals, low calcium intake and low energy intake were significantly correlated with the low BMD. Also the data indicate that girls who reported drinking milk with every meal during childhood had significantly higher bone densities than girls who reported drinking milk less frequently. The results suggest that milk consumption in childhood appears to be needed not only for growth and development, but possibly also to assure an optimal peak of bone mass and thus greater latitude for the maintenance or skeletal integrity in the face of bone losses. There was a highly significant correlation between the total BMD and overall level of physical activity. Body weight was a better predictor of total BMD than was and other factor. Simple mechanical loading may explain why body weight, but total BMC was positively relatd to height. Conclusively, increasing calcium intake and physical activity in the pubescent girls could influence BMD.
The principal objective of this study was to assess the effects of soy isoflavone supplementation on bone mineral density in 36 female college students with osteopenia for 12 weeks. The subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of bone mineral density. The experimental groups were provided supplements of either 80 mg of isoflavone (Iso-80) or 40 mg of isoflavone (Iso-40). To the placebo group, 40 mg of powdered glutinous rice was administered. It was determined that many subjects with osteopenia evidenced lower levels of activity as compared to the control group. Isoflavone supplementation was more effective in controlling total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol than was observed in the placebo group. We noted no significant differences in serum osteocalcin concentration between Iso-40 and the placebo group, but significant differences in osteocalcin concentration were detected between Iso-80 and the placebo group. Bone quality indices (BQI) were correlated positively with mineral content, lean body mass, muscular mass, and blood components including albumin, Ca, Mg, ALPase, and osteocalcin. Both Iso-40 and Iso-80 supplementation for 12 weeks significantly increased protein and mineral content in the body. As lower intakes of Ca and folate were noted in the subjects, emphasis should be given to adequate intakes of these nutrients in the subjects. In conclusion, 12 week isoflavone supplementation in young females with osteopenia exerted positive effects on bone mineral density and bone turnover markers.
Objectives: This study aimed to assess hand grip strength and femoral neck bone mineral density levels among Korean fishery workers and investigate their association. Methods: Hand grip strength and femoral neck bone mineral density were measured in a survey and health examination conducted in 2021 among fishery workers in a southern region of South Korea. Covariates including gender, age, education level, income level, smoking behavior, drinking behavior, family history of hip fractures, use of calcium and vitamin D supplements, hypertension, diabetes, regular exercise, and body mass index were investigated. Multiple regression analysis was employed to assess the association between hand grip strength and femoral neck bone mineral density. Results: Among 147 fishery workers, 8.16% exhibited low hand grip strength levels indicative of possible sarcopenia, and a significant association was found between low hand grip strength and decreased femoral neck bone mineral density (β = -89.14, 95% CI = -160.50, -17.78). Additionally, factors such as women gender, advanced age, family history of hip fractures, and a body mass index below 25 kg/m2 were associated with decreased femoral neck bone mineral density. In the subgroup analysis by gender, a correlation between low hand grip strength and decreased femoral neck bone mineral density was observed only in men. Conclusions: Further research is needed to explore various determinants and intervention strategies to prevent musculoskeletal disorders among fishery workers, ultimately enhancing their quality of life and well-being.
