New insight into the vasto-adductor membrane for safer adductor canal blockade

  • Background: This study aimed to identify exact anatomical landmarks and ideal injection volumes for safe adductor canal blocks (ACB). Methods: Fifty thighs from 25 embalmed adult Korean cadavers were used. The measurement baseline was the line connecting the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the midpoint of the patellar base. All target points were measured perpendicular to the baseline. The relevant cadaveric structures were observed using ultrasound (US) and confirmed in living individuals. US-guided dye injection was performed to determine the ideal volume. Results: The apex of the femoral triangle was 25.3 ± 2.2 cm distal to the ASIS on the baseline and 5.3 ± 1.0 cm perpendicular to that point. The midpoint of the superior border of the vasto-adductor membrane (VAM) was 27.4 ± 2.0 cm distal to the ASIS on the baseline and 5.0 ± 1.1 cm perpendicular to that point. The VAM had a trapezoidal shape and was connected as an aponeurosis between the medial edge of the vastus medialis muscle and lateral edge of the adductor magnus muscle. The nerve to the vastus medialis penetrated the muscle proximal to the superior border of the VAM in 70% of specimens. The VAM appeared on US as a hyperechoic area connecting the vastus medialis and adductor magnus muscles between the sartorius muscle and femoral artery. Conclusions: Confirming the crucial landmark, the VAM, is beneficial when performing ACB. It is advisable to insert the needle obliquely below the superior VAM border, and a 5 mL injection is considered sufficient.

갑상선유두암 재발 진단에서 $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT와 경부초음파검사 병용의 유용성: PET, 경부초음파검사 그리고 혈청 티로글로불린 (thyroglobulin)의 비교 (Usefulness of $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT in Locoregional Recurrence of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Comparison PET/CT to PET and Neck Ultrasonography for Biopsy-proven Lesions)

  • 목적: 이 연구의 목적은 갑상선유두암 환자를 대상으로 재발의 진단에서 $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT와 경부초음파검사를 함께 시행하는 것에 대한 유용성을 평가하고자 한다. 대상 및 방법: 2006년 12월부터 2008년 4월까지 갑상선유두암으로 갑상선 전절제술 및 고용량의 방사성옥소 치료를 시행 받은 환자 중에서 재발이 의심되어 $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT를 시행한 51명(91건)을 대상으로 후향적으로 연구를 진행하였다. 의심되는 병소는 조직검사를 시행하였고, 조직 검사 결과와 PET 검사결과. PET/CT 검사결과, 경부초음파검사 결과를 비교하였다. 결과: $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT (여자 57명, 남자 4명; 연령 범위, 24-81세, 평균 49세; 유두암 61개)의 민감도, 특이도, 정확도는 각각 환자 기준으로 87.2%, 59.0%, 77.0%였고, 병소 기준으로 92.3%, 64.1%, 80.2% 였다. $^{18}F$-FDG PET의 민감도, 특이도, 정확도는 각각 환자 기준으로 71.8% (P=0.03), 59.0% (p=1.00), 67.2% (p=0.03)였고, 병소 기준으로 78.8% (p=0.01), 64.1% (p=1.00), 72.5% (p=0.02)였다. 경부초음파검사의 경우 민감도, 특이도, 정확도는 각각 환자 기준으로 71.1% (p=0.07), 52.2% (p=0.75), 63.9% (p=0.08)였고, 병소 기준으로 71.2% (P<0.01), 61.5% (P=1.00), 67.0% (P=0.06)였다. $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT 와 경부초음파검사를 함께 판독한 경우 민감도, 특이도, 정확도는 각각 환자 기준으로 94.7% (p=0.50), 82.6% (p=0.13), 90.2% (p=0.03)였고, 병소 기준으로 96.2% (p=0.50), 89.7% (p<0.01), 93.4% (p<0.01)였다. 결론: $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT는 갑상선유두암의 재발 진단에서)$^{18}F$-FDG PET와 경부초음파검사와 비교하여 높은 민감도, 특이도, 정확도를 보였다. 게다가 $^{18}F$-FDG PET와 경부 초음파를 함께 시행한 경우 갑상선유두암의 재발 진단에 있어서 더욱 향상된 민감도, 특이도, 정확도를 보였다.

강화학습기법을 이용한 TSP의 해법 (A Learning based Algorithm for Traveling Salesman Problem)

  • This paper deals with traveling salesman problem(TSP) with the stochastic travel time. Practically, the travel time between demand points changes according to day and time zone because of traffic interference and jam. Since the almost pervious studies focus on TSP with the deterministic travel time, it is difficult to apply those results to logistics problem directly. But many logistics problems are strongly related with stochastic situation such as stochastic travel time. We need to develop the efficient solution method for the TSP with stochastic travel time. From the previous researches, we know that Q-learning technique gives us to deal with stochastic environment and neural network also enables us to calculate the Q-value of Q-learning algorithm. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm for TSP with the stochastic travel time integrating Q-learning and neural network. And we evaluate the validity of the algorithm through computational experiments. From the simulation results, we conclude that a new route obtained from the suggested algorithm gives relatively more reliable travel time in the logistics situation with stochastic travel time.

Design for Story-making: Conceptual Exploration on Emotionally Sustainable Design

  • Exploring on two major questions: 'Why do we feel more love for certain objects?' and 'How can design use this knowledge to realize design sustainability?', this article presents an alternative way of approaching the problem of design sustainability from the perspective that our relationships with design objects are of an extended mode of social relations. Recent discussions on design sustainability have transformed the notion of the problem by seeing it as a problem of our basic perception of design objects and our relationships with them. In this light, I propose that design sustainability could not be achieved solely by approaching from a mechanistic perspective, but by re-framing the way we see and relate things around us and by supporting our changes and actions to move forward a more sustainable notion of our relationships with the objects. As a way to realize design sustainability, I propose that design should involve story-making quality that supports our initiatives to build more affectional relations with objects by seeing the objects as entities of communication that tell stories of us, thus reflect our identities and meanings of our lives. Proceeding on the exploration of the subject, I present some of conceptual outlines in forms of an image diary, an interplay-able furniture unit, and a performance instruction that suggest a way for a special story-making process and thus a stronger emotional tie with the objects.

Recent R&D activities on structural health monitoring in Korea

  • In this paper, recent research trends and activities on structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure in Korea are reviewed. Recently, there has been increasing need for adopting smart sensing technologies to SHM, so this review focuses on smart sensing, monitoring, and assessment for civil infrastructure. Firstly, the research activities on smart sensor technology is reviewed including optical fiber sensors, piezoelectric sensors, wireless smart sensors, and vision-based sensing system. Then, a brief overview is given to the recent advances in smart monitoring and assessment techniques such as vibration-based global monitoring techniques, local monitoring with piezoelectric materials, decentralized monitoring techniques for wireless sensors, wireless power supply and energy harvest. Finally, recent joint SHM activities on several test beds in Korea are discussed to share the up-to-date information and to promote the smart sensors and monitoring technologies for applications to civil infrastructure. It includes a Korea-US joint research on test bridges of the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), a Korea-US-Japan joint research on Jindo cable-stayed bridge, and a comparative study for cable tension measurement techniques on Hwamyung cable-stayed bridge, and a campaign test for displacement measurement techniques on Sorok suspension bridge.

GPU를 이용한 함정용 다기능레이다 신호처리기 성능 개선 연구 (A Performance Enhancement of a Naval Multi-Function Radar Signal Processor)

  • 본 논문에서는 공간 및 전원에 제약사항이 존재하는 함정용 다기능레이다의 생존성 향상을 위해 고속 연산용 DSP를 GPU로 대체 가능성을 검토하기 위한 연구를 수행하였다. 성능비교를 위해 동일한 알고리즘으로 DSP와 GPU상에 신호처리기를 구현하였으며, 다기능 추적 레이다 비디오 신호에 대해 응답속도 측면에서 비교를 수행하였다. 성능비교 결과 전체 신호처리 응답속도는 최소 95 us에서 328 us로 GPU가 DSP대비 1.2배~4.1배 우세하였다. 이 연구를 통해 DSP대비 GPU의 성능은 향후 함정용 다기능레이다 뿐 아니라 고속연산이 필요한 레이다신호처리장치를 대체할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

탈수 처리된 석탄 광산 슬러지의 복토재 재활용방안 (Dehydration of a Coal Mine Drainage Sludge for the Potential Landfill Cover)

  • A coal mine drainage sludge(designated as CMDS) is mainly generated during physicochemical treatment or electrical purification of the drainage abandoned mine that include dissolved heavy metal. To understand the possibility of an application of the dehydrated CMDS as the landfill cover medium of hygienic a reclaimed ground, an laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the physicochemical and geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS. To improve the geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS, the liquid limit, plasticity limit test, compaction method test, strength test, and hydraulic conductivity test ware performed with the lithification material mixed sludge. When the mixed ratio of the sludge and the lithification material was more than 1:06, the compaction method was A method, the moisture content less than 33.5%, the strength of mixed sludge was $8.2kg\;cm^{-2}$, the hydraulic conductivity was $2.7\times10^{-6}cm\;sec^{-1}$, the sludge was up to the landfill standard of US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).

후면 passivation 박막으로 Rapid Thermal Oxide를 적용한 Local Back Contact Cell 제작에 관한 연구

  • 최근 결정질 실리콘 태양전지 분야에서는 태양전지의 Voc와 Isc의 증가를 통한 효율 향상을 목적으로 후면 passivation 박막에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. Local-Back Contact Cell은 최적화된 후면 passivation 박막을 이용한 태양전지 제조방법이다. 본 연구에서는 고효율의 LBC 태양전지 개발을 위해 Rapid Thermal Oxide(RTO)를 이용한 후면 passivation 박막에 screen printing을 이용한 point contact 구조의 LBC 태양전지를 제작하고 그 특성을 분석하였다. 본 연구에 사용된 RTO 박막은 O2와 N2, 2L/min의 조건에서 $850^{\circ}C$에서 3분 동안 열처리하여 성장시켰다. 이렇게 성장된 박막은 3nm의 두께로 형성되어 passivation 효과를 나타내었으며, carrier lifetime 측정 결과 37.8us의 값을 나타냈다. 전면 ARC형성을 위해 RTO 박막 위에 PECVD를 이용하여 SiNx passivation 처리를 하였고, 그 결과 carrier lifetime은 49.1us까지 향상하였다. 후면의 전극 형성을 위해 screen printing 방법으로 Al point contact을 형성하여 local 한 BSF를 형성 시켰으며, 이후 후면 전극 연결을 위한 방법으로 300nm의 두께로 full Al evaporation 공정을 진행 하였다. 결과적으로 RTO 후면 passivation 박막에 Al point contact 형성을 통해 제작된 태양전지는, Suns-Voc 579mV, FF 82.3%, 16.7%의 효율을 달성하였다.

Inhibitory Effects of Ultrasound in Combination with Ascorbic Acid on Browning and Polyphenol Oxidase Activity of Fresh-cut Apples

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ultrasound with ascorbic acid on the quality of fresh-cut apples. Prepared apple cubes were dipped in distilled water (US) or in 1% ascorbic acid solution (AS), both were treated with ultrasound at 40 kHz, while the other sample was just dipped in 1% ascorbic acid solution for 1 min (AA). All samples were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 12 days. AS treatment had an effect on apple cube color as indicated by its significantly higher L values and lower ${\Delta}E$ value whereas AA- and US-treated samples showed a considerable browning. Higher inhibition rate on browning and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity of 46 and 98%, respectively, were observed after AS treatment. The highest total phenolic content of AS-treated samples was shown during whole storage periods. This investigation revealed that the use of ultrasound in combination with ascorbic acid had a positive effect on quality maintaining of fresh-cut apples.

  • This paper presents a fault location algorithm using direct 3-phase circuit analysis for distribution power networks. The unbalanced feature of distribution networks due to single phase loads or asymmetric operation prohibits us from using the conventional symmetrical component transformation. Even though the symmetrical component transformation provides us with a very easy tool in three phase network analysis, it is limited to balanced systems in utilizing its strong point, which is not suitable for distribution networks. In this paper, a fault location algorithm using direct 3-phase circuit analysis is developed. The algorithm is derived and it Is shown that the proposed method if we use matrix inverse lemma, is not more difficult then the conventional methods using symmetrical component transformation. Since the symmetrical component transformation is not used in the suggested method, unbalanced networks also can be handled with the same difficulty as balanced networks. The case study results show the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
