  • In this study, the procedure of interpolation surface modeling on bicubic spline patch equation and NC machining are presented. The procedure consists of three parts : patch modeling, cutter location data generation, post processing and NC milling machining. For generation of the cutter location data, tangent vectors and units normal vectors on the patch must be calculated. In order to investigate the properties of the interpolation surface created by bicubic spline patch, two kinds of end conditions, clamped end condition and relaxed end condition, were applied in this study. The shape of the patch depends on the magnitide of the tangent vectors and twist vectors at the corners of bicubic surface patch. the patch generated by relaxed end condition more approximated to the surface patch which was given.

  • Enhancement of the accuracy of products and productivity are essential to survive in a global industrial competition. This trend requires tighter dimensional tolerance specifications. To actively cope with the rapid change of the workpiece material and cutter geometry, a general method that can predict and analyze the machined surface is needed. Surface generation model for the prediction of the topography of machined surfaces is developed based on cutting force model considering cutter deflection and runout. This paper presents the method that constructs the three-dimensional machined surface error following the movement of a cutter, irrespective of the variations of cutting conditions. In addition, the effects of the cutting forces and the kink shape on the machined surface are extensively investigated.

  • It is assumed that the buckling and cutting conditions depending on the slenderness ratio will affect the machining quality of the rotary boring tool mounted on a milling machine. In this study, the boring cutter was designed and fabricated to precisely create the Ø30 hole. Through the performance evaluation, the accuracy of the hole according to the slenderness ratio and cutting conditions was analyzed, and the following conclusions were obtained. The higher the RPM, the smaller the change in the working diameter, and the smaller the hole. Next, the smaller the slenderness ratio, the smaller the change in straightness due to the change in cutting conditions. Finally, the slenderness ratio also affects the tendency for changes in the concentricity. The larger the slenderness ratio, the more sensitive the concentricity to changes in cutting conditions.

  • Face milling is required to study cutting process with a view of multipoint cutter. This experimental study mainly deals with the single and multi-insert cutting characteristics using coated tool. Because metal cutting of the single and multi-insert has a large relation to the improvement of productivity, the economic cutting process can be achieved by the analysis of proper metal cutting mechanism. Therefore, machining characteristics of face molling in this paper has been studied by investigating the role of different insert number which is concerned with mean cutting force, the RMS values of AE(acoustic emission) signal, tool life and surface roughness in milling SS 41 and SUS 304. The cutting force and AE signal are monitored to make an analysis of cutting process. The surface roughness of the specimens machined by inserts of different numbers is measured at different speeds, feeds and depth of cut. The width of flank wear is also observed.

  • This paper has two purposes. One is to investigate the effect of the helix angle of endmilling cutter on the cutting haracteristics of inconel 718 in down endmilling. To this end a newly developed cutting force model in down end milling process is presented. Using this cutting force components of 4-tooth endmills with various helix angles have been predicted. Predicted values of cutting force components are well coincide with the measured ones. The other is to compare the down endmilling characteristics of lnconel 718 with those of the up milling previously presented. In up endmilling as the helix angle becomes larger the radial and tangential components of the specific cutting force ($K_1 and K_r$) decrease. While in down milling $K_1 and K_r$ become smaller as the helix angle decrease.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the helix angle of endmilling cutter on the cutting characteristics of inconel 718 in up endmilling. To this end cutters with helix angle of $20^\circ$, $30^\circ$, $40^\circ$ and $50^\circ$ degree have been prepared. And a modified cutting force model in up end milling process is presented. Using this cutting force components of 4-tooth endmills with various helix angles have been predicted. Predicted values of cutting force components are well coincide with the measured ones. As helix angle increases overlapping effects of the active cutting edges increase.

  • The paper will present chip formation mechanism and surface integrity generation mechanism based on the systematical experimental tests. Some basic factors such as the end milling cutter tooth number, cutting forces, cutting temperature, cutting vibration, the chip status, the surface roughness, the hardness distribution and the metallographic texture of the machined surface layer are involved. the chip formation mechanism is typical thermal plastic shear localization at high cutting speed with less number og shear ribbons and bigger shear angle than at low speed, which means lack of chip deformation. The high cutting speed with much more cutting teeth will be beneficial to the reduction of cutting forces, enlarge machining stability region, depression of temperature increment, auti-fatigability as well as surface roughness. The burrs always exists both at low cutting speed and at high cutting speed. So the deburr process should be arranged for milling titanium alloy in any case.

  • In this paper presents a new technique (stain-telemetering) for detection of coated tool failure in face milling processes. In the cutter body, the strain signals received from the transmitter are transformed into frequency modulation(FM) signals in face milling processes. The receive which is placed near by the Vertical milling machine receives the FM signals, then the signals are sent to a computer, which shows the tool failure. In this paper, A on-line monitoring of the tool failure detection system based on the strain-telemetering apparatus has been represented.

  • In milling, cutting tool ins directly attached to spindle and this tells that spindle can provide very useful information on the cutting tool condition such as wear or breakage. Since spindle is rotating at a high speed, measuring spindle velocity using a noncontacting measurement system gives the best information which can be obtained. Due to the force applied to spindle through cutting tool, velocity of spindle changes. And any change in cutting tool condition affects cutting force and consequently spindle vibration. With the intent of continuously monitoring cutting tool condition in intermittent machining operations in a benign manner, a noncontacting velocity measurement system using a laser Doppler velocimeter was assembled to measure spindle torsional vibration. Spindle vibration was measured and analysis of it in the frequency domain yielded a measure which corresponded to amount of cutting tool wear in milling.

  • In this study, investigated are the effects of tool rake angles and the change of cutting conditions on the specific cutting pressure in face milling. The cutting force in face milling is predicted from the double cutting edge model in3-dimensional cutting. Conventional specific cutting pressure model is modified by considering the variation of tool rake angles. Effectiveness of the modified cutting force model is verified by the experiments using special face milling cutters with different cutter pockets and various rake angles. From the comparison of the presented model and the specific cutting pressure, it is shown that the axial force can be predicted by the tangential force, radial force and geometric conditions. Also, the rela- tionship between specific cutting pressure and cutting conditions including feedrate, cutting velocity and depth of cut is studied.
