  • The designed and fabricated millimeter-wave security screening system receives radiation energy from an object and a human body. The imaging system consist of sixteen array antennas, sixteen four-stage LNAs, sixteen detectors, an infrared camera, a CCD camera, reflector, and a focusing lens. This system requires high sensitivity and wide bandwidth to detect the input thermal noise. The LNA module of the system has been measured to have 65.8 dB in average linear gain and 82 GHz~102 GHz in bandwidth to enhance the sensitivity for thermal noise, and to receive it over a wide bandwidth. The detector is used for direct current (DC) output translation of millimeter-wave signals with a zero bias Schottky diode. The lens and front-end of the millimeter-wave sensor are important in the system to detect the input thermal noise signal. The frequency range in the receiving sensitivity of the detectors was 350 to 400 mV/mW at 0 dBm (1 mW) input power. The developed W-band imaging system is effective for detecting and identifying concealed objects such as metal or plastic.

  • As a preprocessing operation of transmitter antennas, the hybrid precoding is restricted by the limited computing resources of the transmitter. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel hybrid precoding that guarantees the communication efficiency with low complexity and a fast computational speed. First, the analog and digital precoding matrix is derived from the maximum eigenvectors of the channel matrix in the sub-connected architecture to maximize the communication rate. Second, the extended power iteration (EPI) is utilized to obtain the maximum eigenvalues and their eigenvectors of the channel matrix, which reduces the computational complexity caused by the singular value decomposition (SVD). Third, the Aitken acceleration method is utilized to further improve the convergence rate of the EPI algorithm. Finally, the hybrid precoding based on the EPI method and the Aitken acceleration algorithm is evaluated in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity with the high performance in mmWave massive MIMO systems. The method has the wide application prospect in future wireless communication systems.

  • In this paper, the radar cross section of a tank is analyzed at millimeter wave W-band. We calculate the radar cross section of the tank using the program based on PO and PTD and the computed results are compared with those of commercial simulator to check the accuracy of computations. The radar cross section is calculated in terms of the incident angle, polarization, and tank with or without cannon. The radar cross section can be reduced by changing the shape of the turret that can be applied to stealth tanks.

  • A phase shifter is one of the key components that change the phase of an individual antenna in millimeter-wave phased array system. This paper presents a low-loss phase shifter design with two parallel 2-state amplifiers. To get the same gain of $0^{\circ}/180^{\circ}$ each state, delay lines are in the middle of each stage of the 2-Stage amplifiers. Normally, when adding AMPs in parallel, a power combiner/divider such as Wilkinson Power Combiner/Divider is added, but they are directly connected because it can cause added losses in silicon wafer. The measured data shows 12dB gain and 174-degree phase difference at 5GHz.

  • A planar, light-weight, and low-cost notch filter structure is required for the KSTAR ECEI (Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging) system to protect the mixer arrays from spurious plasma heating power. Without protection, this heating power can significantly degrade or damage the performance of the mixer array. To protect mixer arrays, a frequency selective surface (FSS) structure is the suitable choice as a notch filter to reject the spurious heating power. The FSS notch filter should be located between the lenses of the ECEI system. This paper presents a 170 GHz FSS notch filter for the KSTAR ECEI sensor application. The design of such an FSS notch filter is based on the single-sided square loop geometry, because that makes it relatively insensitive to the incident angle of incoming wave. The FSS notch filter exhibits high notch rejection with low pass-band insertion loss over a wide range of incident angles. This paper also reviews the simulated and measured results. The proposed FSS notch filter might be implemented in other millimeter-wave plasma devices.

  • We have fabricated a high-Tc superconductive transistor with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) gate electrode on MgO bicrystal Josephson junction by spin-coating method. The PVDF ferroelectric film is found to be suitable fur a gate electrode of the superconductive transistor since it has not only small leakage current but also high dieletric constant at low temperature. For the application of superconducting-FET, we investigated millimeter wave properties (60 GHz band) of the Josephson junction with PVDF gate electrode.

  • In this paper, an analysis of microstrip-slotline transition is performed using a 3D vector Finite Element Method(FEM). Artificial anistropic absorber technique is employed to implement an matching boundary condition in FEM. On the base of the analysis, power divider/combiner is designed. The structure of the power combiner already developed are Branch-line coupler, Rat-race coupler, Wilkinson coupler, Lange coupler, etc. Which are all planar, If the frequency goes up, the coupling efficiency of these planar couplers is decreased on account of skin loss. Especially, in millimeter-wave band, the efficiency of more than two ways combiner is radically reduced, so that application in power amplifier circuit is almost impossible, Microstrip-slotline transition structure is a power combining technique integrated into wave-guide, so that the loss is small and the efficiency is high. Theoretically, we can mount several transistors into the power-combiner. This makes it possible to develop a high power amplifier. The numerically calculated performances of the device that is, we believe, the best are compared to the experimental results in Ka-Band(26.5GHz-40GHz).
