  • We have experimentally demonstrated a Direct Optical Switching (DOS) CDMA for future wide-band mobile communication systems at the 40 ㎓ band by using orthogonal (crosscorrelation $\leq$2) unipolar type codes with code length of 16 and chip rate of 2.5 Gcps for radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Pulse-amplitude-equalized 40 ㎓ laser pulses were provided by rational-harmonically mode-locking a 10 ㎓ fiber ring laser.

  • Rainfall characteristics for designing the optimum millimeter-wave communication systems from two rainfall data set was analyzed. Two rainfall data sets were compared; one-minute rainfall rate data, one-hour synoptic observation data. Each data set has different observation method, sampling frequency. We looked for tendency and quality confluence between two data sets. We showed several results using one-minute rainfall data by millimeter-wave attenuation model. A climatological one-minute rainfall rate data set over Korean Peninsula will be made after data quality control procedure

  • In this paper, to improve spectral efficiency and mitigate interference in coordinated millimeter-wave systems, we proposes an optimal user group and beam selection scheme. The proposed scheme improves spectral efficiency by mitigating intra- and inter-cell interferences (ICI). By examining the effective channel capacity for all possible user combinations, user combinations and beams with minimized ICI can be selected. However, implementing this in a dense environment of cells and users requires highly complex computational abilities, which we have investigated applying multiclass classifiers based on machine learning. Compared with the conventional scheme, the numerical results show that our proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performance, making it an attractive option for these systems.

  • A 50-60GHz continuous-wave(cw) millimeter-wave(MMW) was converted(generated) by applying optical technology for future wireless and ubiquitous communications. The optical power of 22.5mW was injected into optical waveguide in this experiment. The generated MMW signals were radiated in a millimeter waveguide and detected through a millimeter detector on the inside of a millimeter waveguide in this experiment. The spectral linewidth of the MMW signals was less than 1 kHz. The power fluctuation of the MMW was less than 1.2 dBm over 50-60 GHz range.

  • In this paper, We have proposed an Heterodyne technique to generate millimeter-wave signal. Microwave signals in cellular broadband mobile communication networks and distributed networks can favorably be generated and distributed by optical techniques. In principle, these techniques have already been investigated for optical control of phase-array antennas, characterization of photo-detector and phase locking of millimeter-wave oscillators and now being applied to wireless communications. The generation and transmission of millimeter-wave radio signals by optical means is of interest for future pico-cell broadband mobile communication system, especially for systems operating at frequencies of 300GHz.

  • The current cellular communications are optimized for low mobility users, meaning that their performance is degraded at high speed. Therefore, passengers in a high-speed train experience very poor radio link quality due to the significantly large number of simultaneous handovers. In addition, wireless data traffic is expanding exponentially in trains, subways and buses due to the widespread use of smartphones and mobile devices. To solve the inherent problem of cellular communication networks and meet the growing traffic demand, this paper proposes the mobile hotspot network of a millimeter-wave communication system as a mobile wireless backhaul. This paper describes the physical layer design of uplink and downlink in the proposed system, and the performances of uplink and downlink are evaluated under Rician fading channel conditions. The implemented baseband prototype of the proposed millimeter-wave communication modem is presented. This system can provide a Gbps data rate service in high-speed trains carrying hundreds of wireless Internet users.

  • In this paper, the design, implementation, and analysis of a device capable of transmitting and receiving millimeter-wave signals and performing channel sounding measurements in atmospheric conditions at distances of up to approximately 10km outdoors are presented. The device is expected to be instrumental in studying the propagation characteristics of millimeter-wave frequencies. Utilizing data such as received power levels and power delay profiles (PDPs), comparisons with predicted values using path loss, K-factor, and other propagation models are facilitated. The mobile transceiver unit, integrated onto a vehicle platform, allows for flexible adjustment of transmitter and receiver positions, while synchronization issues with distance are mitigated using a rubidium atomic clock. Furthermore, automatic boresight alignment using scanning techniques is employed to locate the main sector of the antenna.

  • In this paper, we developed a local oscillator (LO) system of millimeter wave band receiver for radio astronomy observation. We measured the phase and amplitude drift stability of this LO system. The voltage control oscillator (VCO) of this LO system use the 3 mm band Gunn oscillator. We developed the digital phase locked loop (DPLL) module for the LO PLL function that can be computer-controlled. To verify the performance, we measured the output frequency/power and the phase/amplitude drift stability of the developed module and the commercial PLL module, respectively. We show the good performance of the LO system based on the developed PLL module from the measured data analysis. The test results and discussion will be useful tutorial reference to design the LO system for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) receiver and single dish radio astronomy receiver at the 3 mm frequency band.

  • There has been lots of studies on communication systems using millimeter wave recently in many countries, specially in newly assigned 57GHz ~ 64GHz ISM band. Among those studies, IEEE 802.15.3c standard proposes OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) systems for high data rate transmission support. But OFDM method has the PAPR (peak-to-Average Power Radio) problem The PAPR problem is to decline the performance of the transmission system due to signals distorted severely when passing through nonlinear components such as ADC/DAC and power amplifiers. In order to solve the problem of P APR, this paper suggests SSC (Sine Soft Clipping) and analyzes the PAPR, CCDF, PSD, BER by applying SAW(Surface Acoustic Wave) filter and power amplifiers to IEEE 802.15.3.c OFDM WPAN systems.
