  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether the methane (CH4) to carbon dioxide (CO2) ratio (CH4/CO2) and methane-related traits obtained by the sniffer method can be used as indicators for genetic selection of Holstein cows with lower CH4 emissions. Methods: The sniffer method was used to simultaneously measure the concentrations of CH4 and CO2 during milking in each milking box of the automatic milking system to obtain CH4/CO2. Methane-related traits, which included CH4 emissions, CH4 per energy-corrected milk, methane conversion factor (MCF), and residual CH4, were calculated. First, we investigated the impact of the model with and without body weight (BW) on the lactation stage and parity for predicting methane-related traits using a first on-farm dataset (Farm 1; 400 records for 74 Holstein cows). Second, we estimated the genetic parameters for CH4/CO2 and methane-related traits using a second on-farm dataset (Farm 2; 520 records for 182 Holstein cows). Third, we compared the repeatability and environmental effects on these traits in both farm datasets. Results: The data from Farm 1 revealed that MCF can be reliably evaluated during the lactation stage and parity, even when BW is excluded from the model. Farm 2 data revealed low heritability and moderate repeatability for CH4/CO2 (0.12 and 0.46, respectively) and MCF (0.13 and 0.38, respectively). In addition, the estimated genetic correlation of milk yield with CH4/CO2 was low (0.07) and that with MCF was moderate (-0.53). The on-farm data indicated that CH4/CO2 and MCF could be evaluated consistently during the lactation stage and parity with moderate repeatability on both farms. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the on-farm applicability of the sniffer method for selecting cows with low CH4 emissions.

  • To obtain some results of the rate of abnormal keton body in urin of dairy animals by age calving rate, milk yield and some feeding and management condition, 104 cows and 107 dairy goats were investigated. And the results obtained were summerized as follows. 1. From about 23.1% of cows and 39.3% goats, abonormal condition of keton body in urine dectated. 2. The rate of abnormal keton bodies possession were lower at the age of 1~4 but higher at the age of 4~11. 3. From the calving animals, the highest rate of keton body were detected but the lowest from first and ninths calving animals. 4. The cows than 20kg milking per day and the goats 3~4kg milking were higher but the cows below 10kg milking and the goods 1~2kg milking were lower. 5. Under bad feeding and management condition, the amount keton bodies in urine of animals were increased much.

  • Objective: The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of cacao bean husk as bedding material in free-stall barn on the behavior, productivity, and udder health of dairy cattle, and on the ammonia concentrations in the barn. Methods: Four different stall surfaces (no bedding, cacao bean husk, sawdust, and chopped wheat straw) were each continuously tested for a period of 1 week to determine their effects on nine lactating Holstein cows housed in the free-stall barn with rubber matting. The lying time and the milk yield were measured between d 4 and d 7. Blood samples for plasma cortisol concentration and teat swabs for bacterial counts were obtained prior to morning milking on d 7. The time-averaged gas-phase ammonia concentrations in the barn were measured between d 2 and d 7. Results: The cows spent approximately 2 h more per day lying in the stalls when bedding was available than without bedding. The milk yield increased in the experimental periods when cows had access to bedding materials as compared to the period without bedding. The lying time was positively correlated with the milk yield. Bacterial counts on the teat ends recorded for cows housed on cacao bean husk were significantly lower than those recorded for cows housed without bedding. Ammonia concentration under cacao bean husk bedding decreased by 6%, 15%, and 21% as compared to no bedding, sawdust, and chopped wheat straw, respectively. The cortisol concentration was lowest in the period when cacao bean husk bedding was used. We observed a positive correlation between the ammonia concentrations in the barn and the plasma cortisol concentrations. Conclusion: Cacao bean husk is a potential alternative of conventional bedding material, such as sawdust or chopped wheat straw, with beneficial effects on udder health and ammonia concentrations in the barns.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the effects of liver-fluke infection on the reproductive disorder and milk and meat production in Korean Native Goat. A survey of infected goat in Chungnam district was conducted with 474 head by interdermal reaction and also a clinical observation was founded. A experiment was carried out to determine the effects of liver fluke extract on the reproductive disorder by subcutaneous injection and milk and meat yield were measured from treat ed goats. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The rate of positive goat was 71.3% among the surveyed goat and the highest rate was appeared at 3~4 years old goats as 81.4%. 2. The treated goats lost condition and failed to thrive, and became progressive weaker. 3. In hemogram, observation, the rate of eosinophil leucocyte was increased significantly by extract treated. 4. It was appeared the pathogenic signs such symptoms poisoning liver function disturbance and reproductive disorder from treated goats with liver fluke extract. 5. In milking goat the milk yield droped significantly and fattening goat did not fatten. 6. The gross income value per capita was lower from infected goat and it was analysed more sensitivly in net income value.

  • In order to develop feed source from shrubby area of mountain for dairy cow, some shrub and grass were harvestied by stage of maturity and analyzed the chemical composition of herbage, and fed to milking cow to know the effect on the body weight and milk production. And the results were summarized as follow. 1. The dry matter content of green herbage was ranged average 25~50% and Smilax china and Cocculus thunbergii were the lowerest as 26.25% and 26.36% respectively and Quercus serrata was the highest as 47.19% of the species. 2. The average protein content of herbage was widely ranged from about 5% to 20%. And Pueraria thunbergiana and Albizzia julibrissin were higher as nearly 20% and Miscanthus sinesis and Arundinella hirta were lower as nearly 5~7%. 3. The average crude fiber content of most species was rarged 20~30%. And Corylus heterophylla and Smilax china were lower as about 20% and Miscanthus sinensis and Arundinella hirta were higher as nearly 37%. 4. The crude protein content of most species was decreased and the fiber content was increased by abvanced the stage of maturity. And also moisture content of green herbage was decreased by seasonal changed. 5. When air dry herbage of 5 kg per head/day was substituted for rice straw, the weight of cows and milk yield and solid not fat content were Slightly increased.
