  • The shipbuilding process is changing due to changes in the development environment and technological requirements for military ships. This would also hold true for a submarine, because its shipbuilding process includes complicated design and construction conditions. System improvement efforts for the design and construction of military ships have continued with the goal of overcoming these conditions. At present, the Korea Navy is developing a 3,000 ton-class Korean type submarine, and its design is progressing by the introduction of a full 3D-ship CAD system. Although the 3D modeling system was introduced for effective design realization through the introduction of collaborative design and active utilization of M&S (modeling and simulation), the introduction effects are not yet generally obvious, according to the characteristics of ship design. The present paper discusses the collaborative environment for developing a submarine to enhance this. This paper proposes the architecture and data structure of a system for realizing collaborative design and discusses a case system developed on the basis of this.

  • This paper presents the Conceptual Models of the Mission Space-Korea (CMMS-K), which is an ontology-based conceptual modeling framework of the mission space. Through modeling and simulating military trainings, we can reduce the cost of actual military trainings in terms of time, space, and supplies. CMMS-K is being developed to improve the interoperability and reusability of defense models and simulations. CMMS-K reflects the needs and characteristics of Korean military while referring to existing military conceptual modeling frameworks. The main components of CMMS-K contain domain ontologies, a mission space model description language, a mission space modeling tool, and a CMMS-K management system. CMMS-K domain ontologies consist of entity and task ontologies. In this paper, the CMMS-K domain ontologies are described in detail and the feasibility of the proposed method is discussed with a case study.

  • The ubiquitous embedded computers are firmly established as the basic electronic component of design that control military systems. Such applications can be found everywhere in the field of military system. A embedded computer is required to redesign when system needs performance upgrade or production-state of processor is NRND or EOL. This paper describes a scheme about impact analysis of designing processor alteration on embedded computer. In this case, hardware architecture and interrupt source of target system must be considered. Also, performance and throughput of that must be analyzed.

  • Security environment we face in the Korean Peninsula is unexpectable. Tensions between Seoul and Pyeongyang and its threats are continuously evolving. Kim Jung Un will keep on conducting provocations and DPRK's isolation will result uncertainty to their objective and intention. KPA is centered on ground forces with conventional weapons but they possess modernized missiles and nuclear capabilities. What's more concerning is that North Korea continuously pursue and develop nuclear weapons and missile capabilities. Pursuing defense reform is inevitable for the ROK to deal adequately against the security threats posed by the North and to prepare for the environment of future warfare. If we are satisfied with the current capabilities then our military capabilities and security status will retrogress. We have to reorganize our units to make a small but FMC, smart military organization. Organization analysis is an urgent issue for reorganizing units. However, it isn't an easy task to reform an organization. There are vague parts for analysis and strong resistance from the people within the organization. Therefore should not focus on the reduction of people and the organization. Organization reform should be done with the acknowledgement of most of the personnel and should focus on the task and its method. These should be reflected to the organization analysis.

  • Although self-propelled artilleries are mobile equipment, they need their own covered-positions for survival against preemptive strikes. The most important military requirement is enough protective capacity against blast pressure caused by explosion. This paper aims to assess the protective capacity of the newly-placed concrete box-type artillery positions using accurate structural geometric models as well as soil-structure interaction analysis. The commercial program is used to model the structural geometry of the positions. In order to describe the correct wave propagation in the backfill along with soil-structure interaction, used parameters in shock equation of state are selected based on the related studies as well as theories and then their final results are verified with the ones calculated with empirical equations in the US Unified Facility Criteria. In sum, it could be concluded that the protective capacity of the newly-built positions satisfies the protective structural requirement.

  • This paper describes the quality attributes of an integrated simulation software for weapon systems named Advanced distributed simulation environment(AddSIM). AddSIM is developed as a key enabler for Defense Modeling & Simulation(M&S) systems which simulate battlefields and used for battle experiments, analyses, military exercises, training, etc. AddSIM shall provide a standard simulation framework of the next Defense M&S systems. Therefore AddSIM shall satisfy not only functional but also quality requirements such as availability, modifiability, performance, testability, usability, and others. AddSIM consists of operating softwares of hierarchical components including graphical user interface, simulation engines, and support services(natural environment model, math utility, etc.), and separated weapon system models executable on the operating softwares. The relation between software architectures and their quality attributes are summarized from previous works. And the AddSIM architecture and its achievements in the aspect of quality attributes are reviewed.

  • The purpose of the weapon live test during the phase of development is to provide essential information to decision makers that verify and validate the performance capabilities of weapons. Due to varying allocation and high variance of test resources with an increase in the weapon system's capability, the test environment can get highly complex, which can lead to a decrease in the reliability of test results. This issue can be addressed by applying a decision support system that provides various timely information collected by resources during the test process. The decision support system can be designed by applying the concept of digital twins, that are defined as digital replicas of components, systems and processes. This paper describes a design methodology of the decision support system that consists of digital models and service functions using digital twin architecture. A case study illustrates the feasibility of the proposed methodology in supporting the weapon live test process.

  • This study deals with an AI architecture model for collecting battlefield data using the tactical C4I system. Based on this model, the artificial staff can be utilized in tactical echelon. In the current structure of the Army's tactical C4I system, Servers are operated by brigade level and above and divided into an active and a standby server. In this C4I system structure, the AI server must also be installed in each unit and must be switched when the C4I server is switched. The tactical C4I system operates a server(DB) for each unit, so data matching is partially delayed or some data is not matched in the inter-working process between servers. To solve these issues, this study presents an operation concept so that all of alternate server can be integrated based on virtualization technology, which is used as an source data for AI Meta DB. In doing so, this study can provide criteria for the AI architectural model of the ground tactical echelon.

  • With developing computer and communication technologies, the concept of CALS system has been popular not only to military but also to commercial industries. The security problem is one of the most critical issues to construct CALS infrastructure. The CALS system needs some security functions such that data confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, availability, and non-repudiation. This paper proposes a security architecture model in CALS. The security architecture model is composed of 5 submodels such that network security model, authentication and key management model, operation and audit model, integrated database security model, and risk analysis model.

  • Heating and hot water supply energy consumption of medium and multi boiler systems applied to military officer housing are compared with in-situ experiment and TRNSYS dynamic simulation program. In a multiple boiler system, small capacity boilers are connected in parallel to meet the required capacity. For handling partial loads, medium capacity boiler relies on on-off control, while multi boiler adopts PI control. Since multi boiler has higher efficiency and better control strategy, the results show that energy consumption can be reduced significantly with the multi boiler system.
