  • This military aircraft requires the compatibility evaluation of armed installations in accordance with guidelines and standards. In order to ensure the influence of gas-air mixtures caused by gunfire of the supersonic aircraft, CFD analysis of internal and external flows was performed and the results carried out and discussed. The low velocity vortex was formed due to the shape of the Gun Port, after firing the gas-air mixture was evacuated to the outside flow, where it moved to the front of the aircraft and soon merged with the aircraft flow field.

  • Many factors such as wind direction, wind strength, temperature, and obstacles affect a munition's trajectory. Since these factors eventually determines the probability of hit and the hitting point of a target, these factors should be considered to obtain reliable weapon effectiveness data. In this study, we propose the extension of the MSDL(Military Scenario Definition Language) to reflect these factors to improve the reliability of weapon effectiveness data. Based on the existing MSDL, which has been used to set the initial condition of a military simulation scenarios, the newly identified subelements are added in ScenarioID, Environment, Organizations, and Installations as a scenario schema. Also, DamageAssessment and DesignOfExperiments element are added to make weapon effectiveness data easily. The extended MSDL enables to automatically generate the simulation scenarios that reflect various factors which affect the probability of hit or kill. This extended MSDL is applied to an integrated simulation software of weapon systems, named AddSIM version 4.0 for generation of weapon effectiveness data.

  • In defense and military facility projects, adjustments to contract amounts due to design changes directly or indirectly affect factors such as increased construction costs and extended construction periods. Moreover, they can lead to differences of opinion and conflicts between the military and contracting parties. This case study analyzed the integrated management of defense and military facility projects by the Gyeonggi Southern Facilities Division, which oversees projects in Seoul and the southern Gyeonggi Province region for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Out of 388 completed projects, 103 cases with design changes were selected for analysis, aiming to ensure the reliability of data regarding the proportion of design changes in project completion. The study classified samples by the causes of design changes specified in the Ministry of Planning and Finance's contract regulations, assigning rankings based on the occurrence rates of each cause. Furthermore, it analyzed detailed factors for each cause of design change and derived implications to propose improvement measures. Considering the limited access to military primary data, this case study is expected to contribute to minimizing design changes in defense and military facility projects. Additionally, it is anticipated to be practically useful for subsequent research on contract amount adjustments resulting from design changes.

  • 'Flight safety zone' means a zone that the Minister of National Defense designates under Articles 4 and 6 of the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act (hereinafter 'PMBIA') for the safety of flight during takeoff and landing of military aircrafts. The purpose of flight safety zone is to contribute to the national security by providing necessary measures for the protection of military bases and installations and smooth conduct of military operations. In this case, when the state set and used the flight safety zone, the landowner claimed restitution of unjust enrichment against the country. This article is an analysis based on the existing legal theory regarding the legitimacy of plaintiff's claim, and the summary of the discussion is as follows. A person who without any legal ground derives a benefit from the property or services of another and thereby causes loss to the latter shall be bound to return such benefit (Article 741 of the Civil Act). Since the subject matter is an infringing profit, the defendant must prove that he has a legitimate right to retain the profit. The State reserves the right to use over the land designated as a flight safety zone in accordance with legitimate procedures established by the PMBIA for the safe takeoff and landing of military aircrafts. Therefore, it cannot be said that the State gained an unjust enrichment equivalent to the rent over the land without legal cause. Expropriation, use or restriction of private property from public necessity and compensation therefor shall be governed by Act: provided, that in such a case, just compensation shall be paid (Article 23 (1) of the Constitution of The Republic of KOREA). Since there is not any provision in the PMBIA for loss compensation for the case where a flight safety zone is set over land as in this case, next question would be whether or not it is unconstitutional. Even if it is designated as a flight safety zone and the use and profits of the land are limited, the justification of the purpose of the flight safety zone system, the appropriateness of the means, the minimization of infringement, and the balance of legal interests are still recognized; thus just not having any loss compensation clause does not make the act unconstitutional. In conclusion, plaintiff's claim for loss compensation based on the 'Act on Acquisition of and Compensation for land, etc. for Public Works Projects', which has no provision for loss compensation due to public limits, is unjust.

  • Due to the lack of a noise and vibration survey for military air bases, noise and vibration are not taken into consideration for new installations, which has resulted in a number of problems, including the separation of tiles. Furthermore, it is not possible to establish appropriate counter-vibration plans to minimize damage resulting from vibration on structures, since no standard is in place when location for residence areas, including military quarters, is determined. In this context, this research includes a noise and vibration survey, on which basis a quantitative evaluation model for vibration of structure by aircraft noise is generated, as well as through linear regression analysis, and suggests installation standards by purpose of structure, minimizing the damage due to noise and vibration, and establishing appropriate counter-vibration plans for future installation and repairs of on-base structures in the military bases.

  • Airfield pavements, such as runways and taxiways, are essential for smooth take-off and landing of fixed-wing aircraft and are the most important installation for the military to carry out air operations during wartime. Therefore, in wartime, it is necessary to reduce the damage to these installations and repair them in the shortest possible time. Recently, the pattern of attack is changing from the use of conventional high explosive which is to create large craters to the use of multiple warheads weapon system which is to effectively attack enemy's airfields but unrelated to accuracy. Hence in this study, through identifying the specification and composition of multiple warheads weapon system, we checked the protection performance and damage patterns of the pavement when explosion occurred on the installed military runway and taxiway by the multiple warheads weapon system. And The multiple warheads weapon systems is able to cause extensive damage but the destructive power of each warhead is not as great, so I would like to propose an airfield pavement design plan for minimal protection against such attacks.

  • In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the future battlefield will carry out multi-area operations with hyper-connected, high-speed and mobile systems. In order to prepare for changes in the future, the Korean military intends to develop various weapons systems and form a multi-layer tactical network to support On The Move communication. However, current tactical networks are limited in support of On The Move communications. In other words, the operation of multi-beam antennas is necessary to efficiently construct a multi-layer tactical network in future warfare. Therefore, in this paper, we look at the need for multi-beam antennas through the operational scenario of a multi-layer tactical network. In addition, based on development consideration factors, features of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, we present the location and operation of airborne relay drone installations of multi-beam antennas.

  • This study suggests the design and assembly drawing of the prefabricated precast concrete arch ammo magazines using the numerical analysis as well as the explosion verification test. The protective capacity of the proposed magazines is identified with the maximum support rotation angles measured by explosion verification tests according to the U.S. Unified Facility Criteria 3-340-02. Using numerical analysis, it is examined that oval-type members are better than the semi-circle ones in terms of protective capacity. Based on this numerical results, the design and assemble drawing for the prefabricated precast concrete arch ammo magazine are developed. It is identified that the structure constructed by invented design and assembly drawing has enough protective capacity against blast pressure caused by 133.75kg TNT explosion. The detonation point cannot be open due to the military security. In sum, it could be concluded that the ammo magazine proposed in this study has reliable protective capacity with enough redundancy. The redundancy means that there are more economic design approach with reducing the curved wall thickness.

  • Two-point mutations (V419L and L925I) on the voltage-sensitive sodium channel of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are known to confer pyrethroid resistance. To determine the status of pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs in Korea, resistance allele frequencies of bed bug strains collected from several US military installations in Korea and Mokpo, Jeollanamdo, from 2009-2019 were monitored using a quantitative sequencing. Most bed bugs were determined to have both of the point mutations except a few specimens, collected in 2009, 2012 and 2014, having only a single point mutation (L925I). No susceptible allele was observed in any of the bed bugs examined, suggesting that pyrethroid resistance in bed bug populations in Korea has reached a serious level. Large scale monitoring is required to increase our knowledge on the distribution and prevalence of pyrethroid resistance in bed bug populations in Korea. Based on present study, it is urgent to restrict the use of pyrethroids and to introduce effective alternative insecticides. A nation-wide monitoring program to determine the pyrethroid resistance level in bed bugs and to select alternative insecticides should be implemented.

  • In this paper, we discussed automatic target tracking algorithms for diver detection sonar that observes penetration forces of coastal military installations and major infrastructures. First of all, we analyzed sea trial data in diver detection sonar and composed automatic target tracking algorithms based on track existence probability as track quality measure in clutter environment. In particular, these are presented track management algorithms which include track initiation, confirmation, termination, merging and target tracking algorithms which include single target tracking IPDAF (Integrated Probabilistic Data Association Filter) and multitarget tracking LMIPDAF (Linear Multi-target Integrated Probabilistic Data Association Filter). And we analyzed performances of automatic target tracking algorithms using sea trial data and monte carlo simulation data.
