The ultimate bending strength and flexural ductility performance of longitudinally stiffened plate girders fabricated with mild steel were investigated utilizing nonlinear incremental finite element analysis. AASHTO LRFD (2002) design specifications were reviewed for possible application of longitudinally stiffened plate girders as compact sections. In order to investigate compact section requirements for plate girders with longitudinal stiffeners in webs, a number of full-scale plate girders were modeled and analyzed up to the collapse under pure bending condition. It was found that the slenderness of sub panel of the webs, the stiffness of longitudinal stiffeners, and the slenderness of compression flanges are key parameters governing the flexural ductility of the plate girders. It was also found from finite element analysis that longitudinally stiffened plate girder sections can satisfy compact section requirements both in full plastic moment capacity and flexural ductility requirement. New design equations have been proposed for longitudinally stiffened plate girders to be treated as compact sections.
The effect of the stoichiometry on the sliding wear properties of NiAl coatings has been investigated. Three different powder mixtures with the compositions of Ni-50at%Al, Ni-54at%Al and Ni-42at%Al were diepressed respectively, and which were subsequently coated on mild steel through combustion synthesis in an induction heating system. Sliding wear behavior of the coatings was examined against an alloyed tool steel using a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. As results, it could be seen that powder mixture(Ni-54at%Al) with displaying Al-rich deviations from the stoichiometry of NiAl(Ni-50at%Al) was promoted the most the synthetic reactivity. The microstructure of the coating layer with the compositions of Ni-54at%Al exhibits the porous NiAl single phase structure. However, the microstructure of the coating layer of the compositions of Ni-42at%Al exhibits the denser multi-phase structure containing several intermediate phases in addition to NiAl. Densification of the coating layer was enhanced by increasing the reacting temperature. On the other hand, the wear properties of the coating layers showed that the wear mode at speeds of around 1 m/s was severe wear, regardless of the stoichiometry and reacting temperature. However, wear properties of coating layer with the compositions of Ni-42at%Al were superior to those of coating layer with the compositions of Ni-54at%Al. This would be attributed by the fact that coating layer with the compositions of Ni-42at%Al develops little void and much intermediate phases with high strength.
The importance of emotional quality of car is getting higher in these days. Noise takes great portion in emotional quality because it is detectable problem with just a few rides. The sources of car noise during operation are various and the related technical issues are vast. Sometimes weldments of auto body are referred as the source of noise and the suspicious weldment shows unsatisfactory welding quality in most cases. In this research, cases of noise making weldments are investigated to figure out the solution for welding quality improvement. They are categorized into several groups in according to the inferred types of the error source then appropriate solutions are suggested. Auto body has weldments of resistance spot welding and gas metal arc welding in general. Therefore the solutions are suggested as adjustment of welding process variables and related machineries. Inevitable error source is also referred which is originated from thermal expansion rate difference between ultra high strength steel and mild steel. This new approach is validated through simple calculation then more concrete investigation with numerical analysis is remained as further works to be done.
The study was carried out to examine in more detail metallurgical and mechanical properties of brazed joints of diamond cutting wheel. In this work, shank(mild steel) and sintered bronze-base tips were brazed with three different filler materials(W-40, BAgl and BAg3S). The machine used in this work was a high frequency induction brazing equipment. The joint thickness, porosities and microstructure of brazed joints with brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) were evaluated with OLM, SEM, EDS and XRD. Bending(torque) test was also performed to evaluate strength of brazed joints. Further wetting test was performed in a vacuum furnace in order to evaluate the wettability of filler metals on base metals9shank and tips). The brazing temperature had a strong influence on the joint strength and the optimum brazing temperature range was about $700~850^{\circ}C$ for the bronze/steel combinations. The strength of the brazed joint was found to be influenced by the three factors : degree of reaction region, porosity content, joint thickness. The reaction region was formed in the bronze-base tip adjacent to the joint. The reaction region resulted in a bad influence on the strength due to the formation of Cu5.6Sn, CuZn4, $\beta(CuZn)$ and CdAg, etc. Porosities increased as brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) increased, and the brazed joints with porosities of less than about 3-5% had an optimum strength for the bronze-base tip.
The drag reduction agency (DRA) for gas pipeline, a novel method used for reducing friction or drag on a gas flowing to increase the transmission efficiency of gas pipeline, is a more flexible and economical technology than internal flow efficient coatings. In this paper, an effective DRA has been developed in Authors' Institute by analyzing the hydrodynamic friction resistance on internal gas pipeline and then studying the work mechanism and molecular structure of DRA. In the meantime, a group of property test for selecting DRA material has been determined, including viscosity, contact angle, volatility, corrosion, slab extending, and flow behavior in horizontal tube. The inhibition efficiency and drag reduction efficiency of the developed DRA have been investigated finally based on the relevant test methods. Results of corrosion test show that the developed DRA has very good inhibition effect on mild steel by brushing a thin layer of DRA on steel specimens, giving inhibition efficiency of 91.2% and 73.1% in 3%NaCl solution and standard salt fog environment respectively. Results of drag-reducing test also show that the Colebrook formula could be used to calculate friction factors on internal pipes with DRA as the Reynolds number is in the range of $0.75\times10^5\sim2.0\times10^5$. By comparing with normal industrial pipes, the friction resistance coefficient of the steel pipe with DRA on internal wall decreases by 13% and the gas flux increases by 7.3% in testing condition with Reynolds number of $2.0\times10^5$.
Hot straining embrittlement is one of the most important factors which cause the brittle fracture initiation even in the service temperature in the case of mild steel and high tensile steel. Therefore it is necessary to analyze thoroughly the hot straining embrittlement occurred in weld HAZ of the structural steels. The behaviors of plastic deformation and fracture toughness at the notch tip of the hot strained weld HAZ in structural steels (SB 41 KS, SA 588-Grade A ASTM) have been studied by the recrystallization technique and crack opening displacement (COD) test method. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. The plastic zone is formed at the notch tip of weld HAZ owing to nomotonic and cyclic hot stran, and the maximum plastic strain increases with the accumulated hot straining amounts. 2. The distribution of the effective strain at the plastic deformed zone in HAZ can be determined as follows; (.epsilon. over bar $_{p}$ )$_{\chi}$=.epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ ( $R_{/chi}$/.chi.)$^{m}$ where, .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ : (SB 41; .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ = 0.2, SA 588; .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ = 0.1) 3. The embrittlement of weld HAZ in SB 41 and SA 588 is influenced by hot strain, and the degree of embrittlement becomes deeper with hot straining amounts. 4. The embrittlement of weld HAZ of SB 41 is not influenced by the hot straining amounts until .epsilon. over bar $_{max}$ = 0.36, $R_{\chi}$ = 0.065mm, however the embrittlement of structure in SA 588 is considerably influenced even by a small quantity of the hot straining amounts.s.
Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.
Objective of this research is to evaluate fracture behaviors of fresh-butt welded metal by the acoustic emission technique. The specimens used are medium carbon steel(SM45C), mild steel (SS41) and stainless steel(SUS304), which have different weldability. The similar welding and dissimilar welding processes are considered, in the former SM45C, SS41 and SUS304 are used, in the later the following metals are used SM45C and SS41, SM45C and SUS304 and SS41 and SUS304. The characteristics of fracture in weld metal are eshmated by the tension test with nominal speciemns, the fracture toughness test with compact tension specimens and fractography analysis. The results of tension test show for base metals and similar welding materials that the yield strength and ultimate strength of similar welding materials are increased, the elongation of those are decreased. The weldability of SUS304 is better than that of SM45C and SS41 In similar welding materials. Mechanical properties of dissimilar welding mateiiths we lower than those of similar welding materials. In dissimilar welding materials, the weldability of SM45C and SUS304 is better than that of SM45C and SS41, and also weidability of SS41 and SUS304 is better than SS41 and SM45C. Comparing mechanical properties with AE counts, it is found that AE conuts appeared on a small before the limit load of elasticity(P$_{e}$), and apper greatly near yield strength region in tension test. These results could contribute to the safety analyses and the evaluation of strength for welding structure.e.
This paper summarizes the test results of the flexible-stiff mixed system for the effective use of high-strength steel. Steel with a high degree of strength and performance is being increasingly required as buildings get larger and taller. High-strength steels cannot be used for many applications, though, because they have a number of defects. For instance, they have a high yield ratio, a small strain in maximum stress, and equal Young's modulus compared to mild steels. A new structural system is needed to effectively use high-strength steels with some defects. This paper proposes the flexible-stiff mixed system for the effective use of high-strength steels with high yield ratios. The possibility of using the system is discussed through the test of flexible-stiff mixed columns with high-strength steels. The main variable of the specimens is the yield displacement ratio, including both the force ratio and the stiffness ratio. The proper yield displacement ratio is proposed by adopting the flexible-stiff mixed system. The test results showed that the proposed flexible-stiff mixed system has a high capacity for energy absorption and the highest capacity for energy absorption when the yield displacement ratio of the flexible element to the stiff element ranges from 2.7 to 3.3.
Wear diagrams, which are the three dimensional representations of the dependence of the wear rate on the applied pressure and the sliding speed, were constructed with the pin on ring type wear test results using 52100 wear couples. The pressure and speed ranges from 0.45 MPa to 45.30 MPa and from 0.012 m/sec to 0.12 (0.120)m/sec, respectively. The results show the mild to severe transition, which suggests the change of the wear mechanisms as a function of the pressure and sliding speed. The SEM micrographs of the corresponding worn area shows clearly that different wear mechanisms dominate.
