This study was performed to determine the physical properties of rice hull and straw which could be used for an optimum design and operation of the handling facilities for these rice crop by-products. The properties measured were kinetic friction coefficient , bulk density, and dynamic and static angle of repose. Rice hulls with moisture content of 13% and 21% were used throughout the test while rice straws of 10% and 16% moisture were chopped into 10mm length and used for the test. Friction coefficient was calculated from the horizontal traction forces measurement when a container holding the mass of rice hull and straw was pulled over mild steel. PVC, stainless steel, and galvanized steel surface by a universal testing machine. Bulk density was measured by an apparatus consisting of filling fundel and a receiving vessel. Dynamic angle of repose which is the angle at which the material will stand when piled was calculated from the photos of bulk samples after they were flowed by gravity and accumulated on a circular surface. Static angle of repose which is the angle between the horizontal and the sloping side of the material left in the container when discharging was also measured in the similar way. Results and conclusions from this study are summarized as follows . 1. Kinetic friction coefficient of both rice hull and straw were in the range of 0.26 -0.52 and increased with the moisture content. The magnitude of friction increased in the order of galvanized steel, stainless steel, PVC ,and mild steel. 2. Bulk densities of rice hull decreased while those of rice straw increased with moisture content increase . Average bulk densities of rice hull and straw were 96.8 and 74.7kg/㎥, respectively. 3. Average dynamic angle of repose for rice straw was 32.6$^{\circ}$ and those for 13% and 21% moisture rice hull were 38.9$^{\circ}$ and 44.9$^{\circ}$ , respectively. 4. Static angles of repose for both rice hull and straw showed increase with the moisture content. The values were 75.2\ulcorner and 80.2$^{\circ}$ for 13% and 21% moisture rice hull, respectively. Rice straws having 10% and 16% moisture content showed 87.3% and 89.2$^{\circ}$ static angle of repose, respectively.

Full-scale experimental study and numerical analysis on behaviors and failure mechanisms of full high strength steel extended endplate connections in fire have been carried out and presented in this paper. The experimental behaviors of the connections were compared with the provisions of Eurocode 3. The test results show that the failure modes of the connections in fire are bolt failure with yielding of the flange, as same as those at ambient temperature. The failures of the bolts in fire are ductile while they are brittle at ambient temperature. The rotation capacity of the connections in fire is proved sufficient. What is more, at elevated temperature $550^{\circ}C$, the plastic moment resistances of Q690 and Q960 full high strength steel endplate connections are only 40% of those at ambient temperature, while their initial rotation stiffness are 66 and 63% respectively. But the rotation capacities of Q690 and Q960 high strength steel endplate connections are 1.38 and 1.74 times of those at ambient temperature. Moreover, it is found that the component method Eurocode 3 proposed based on connections made of mild steels can be used to calculate plastic resistances and to predict failure modes of high strength steel endplate connections in fire, but it is not suitable to predict their stiffness. The suggestions about rotation capacity of connections in Eurocode 3 are found too conservative for high strength steel endplate connections in fire.
Fatigue tests by axial loading (R = 0.05) were carried out to investigate fatigue crack growth characteristics of small surface cracks in 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel at room temperature by using flat specimens with a small artificial pit. All the data of the fatigue crack growth rate obtained in the present test are determined as a function of the stress intensity factor range about a semi-elliptical crack, so that the application of linear fracture mechanics to the surface fatigue crack growth and to the fatigue crack growth into depth, and all the data obtained from tests were discussed in comparison with the data of Type 304 stainless steel and two type of mild steel under the same test conditions. The obtained results are as follows: 1)When the cycle ratios are same, surface fatigue crack length and its depth are almost same and fall within a narrow scatter band in spite of different stress levels. 2)Relations of the surface fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) and fatigue crack growth rate into depth (db/dN) to its stress intensity factor range ($\Delta K_{Ia}, \Delta K_{Ib}$) can be plotted as a straight line at log-log diagram without dependence of stress level and coincide with the data of part-through crack in various steels.
Micro-alloyed steels(MA steels) for cold forging was developed to replace the usual quenched and tempered steel. MA steels have several advantages over the conventional quenched and tempered carbon steels. First of all, energy consumption could be lowered due to the elimination of spherodizing annealing and quenching/tempering heat treatment. Also, bending during quenching could be avoided when MA steels are applied for manufacturing of long fastener parts. However, larger amount of load is exerted on the dies compared than in the case of conventional mild steels, which might lead to the earlier fracture of dies, when MA forging steels are applied in forging practice. Therefore, die lift could be a critical factor to determine whether HA forging steels could be widely applied in cold forging practice. In the present study, authors have investigated the forging characteristics of non-heat treated micro-alloyed steel by using a series of experimental and numerical analyses. Firstly, microstructural features and its effect on the deformation behavior have been studied. Numerical analysis has been done on the forging of guide rod pin to investigate for the optimization of forging process and die stress prediction.
Laser decontamination of radioactive surfaces is an innovative technology. Our contribution to improving this technology includes studies on laser beam decontamination with a pulsed laser of an average power of 150 W, equipped with a hand guided working head. Our investigations are focused on metallic surfaces typical in nuclear power plants, such as stainless steel, bright and rusted mild steel, galvanized steel, and painted steel. As typical nuclides of contaminated surfaces we chose Co-60 and Cs-137, the most frequently occurring nuclides in many nuclear plant components; Sr-85 as a representative of Sr-90, the potentially most harmful fission nuclide; and Am-241 as a representative of the minor alpha-radiation emitting actinides. Here, we present our results of decontamination and recovery ratios. Decontamination ratios of 90-100% were achieved on different surfaces.
The atmospheric corrosion performance of Al-alloying, Si-alloying and Al-Si-alloying steel were studied by wet/dry cyclic corrosion tests (CCT) at $30^{\circ}C$ and 60% relative humidity (RH). The corrosion electrolyte used for CCT was 0.052 wt% $NaHSO_{3}$ (pH~4) solution. The result of gravimetry demonstrated that Al-Si-bearing steels showed lower corrosion resistance than other rusted steels. But the rusted 0.7%Si-alloying steel showed a better corrosion resistance than rusted mild steel. Polarization curves demonstrated that Al-/Si-alloying and Al-Si-alloying improved the rest potential of steel at the initial stage; and accelerated the cathodic reduction and anodic dissolution after a rust layer formed on the surfaces of steels. XRD results showed that Al-Si-alloying decreased the volume fraction of $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ and $\alpha-FeOOH$. The recycle of acid accelerated the corrosion of steel at the initial stage. After the rust layer formed on the steel, the leak of rust destabilized the rust layer due to the dissolution of compound containing Al (such as $FeAl_{2}O_{4}$, $(Fe,\;Si)_{2}(Fe,\;Al)O_{4}$). Al-Si-alloying is hence not suitable for improving the anti-corrosion resistance of steel in industrial atmosphere.
It was reported in the Journal of KSME Vol. 15, No. 3 and No. 4, 1975 that could be finished the best smooth surface by applying frictional work to the metal surface. Even if we can finish the best smooth surface of methal, it is not available when it has not anti-wear. Present study tried to investigate the anti-wear and the characteristics of frictional worked surface by using the sliding contact between plain bearing of brass and frictional worked jornal of mild steel. The results were compared with the case of ground journal.

A calculating method of transient temperature distribution due to spot welding of thin plates is studied in this paper. Considering the contact stress between upper and lower plate and temperature-dependence of specific resistance and elastic limit of base metal, the model of calorific density of heat source was decided. Using 2-dimensional polar coordinates system, the governing equation of heat transfer was developed. The thermal cycles of various points were recorded using C-A thermocouples during spot welding procedure for mild steel plates of 1mm thickness, and those results were compared with the results of calculations presented in this paper.

In this paper, it is aimed to present a detail investigation related to structural behavior of laterally unrestrained steel cantilever roof of tribune with slender cross section. The structure is located in Tutak town in $A{\breve{g}}r{{\i}}$ and collapsed on October 25, 2015 at eastern part of Turkey is considered as a case study. This mild sloped roof structure was built from a variable I beam, and supported on steel columns of 5.5 m height covering totally $240m^2$ closed area in plan. The roof of tribune collapsed completely without any indication during first snowfall after construction at midnight a winter day, fortunately before the opening hours. The meteorological records and observations of local persons are combined together to estimate the intensity of snow load in the region and it is compared with the code specified values. Also, the wide/thickness and height/thickness ratios for flange and web are evaluated according to the design codes. Three dimensional finite element model of the existing steel tribune roof is generated considering project drawings and site investigations using commercially available software ANSYS. The displacements, principal stresses and strains along to the cantilever length and column height are given as contour diagrams and graph format. In addition to site investigation, the numerical and analytical works conducted in this study indicate that the unequivocal reasons of the collapse are overloading action of snow load intensity, some mistakes made in the design of steel cantilever beams, insufficient strength and rigidity of the main structural elements, and construction workmanship errors.
