  • This study examined the effectiveness of the cognitive activity integration program to delay the progression of the mild demented elderly. The subjects were divided into experimental group and comparative group for 12 cases of mild dementia, and the cognitive activity integration program was conducted for 8 weeks and compared with the MMSE-K, ADL & IADL, CDR and GDS scales. The results show that the effectiveness and continuity of the program are as follows. First, as an implication of practical dimension, integrated program of fusion and complexity is more effective than cognitive activity program of single domain. Second, the cognitive activity integration program must be continuously provided to maintain its effectiveness. Third, the cognitive activity integration program is as important as the practice process. It is necessary to develop and disseminate a cognitive activity integration program that reflects fusion and complex treatment techniques applicable to the elderly with mild dementia by practical suggestion. Policy suggestions are needed to continue the ongoing cognitive activity integration program, to maintain effectiveness, and to delay the progress of dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a computerized cognitive training(CCT) on cognitive, depression, life satisfaction and activity of daily living in older adults with mild dementia. The participants were 32 older adults diagnosed with mild dementia who reside in nursing hospital and were randomly divided into an 16 for an experimental group and 16 for a control group. A CCT was performed for a day/week for 8 weeks in an experimental group. The CoTras-G was used for CCT. The MMSE-K, SGDS-K, ELS and BI were administered to the experimental group and the control group in the same way in order to examine the effects of CCT. The difference of the effects between before and after a CCT conduction were identified by paired t-test. Moreover, the Mann-Whitney U-test was conducted to identify differences in variances between groups. Only participants in the experimental group reported significant improvements in cognitive function, depression, life satisfaction and activity of daily living when compared to those in the control group after CCT. There was a significant difference in cognitive function, depression, life satisfaction and activity of daily living between the experimental group and the control group after CCT. These findings suggest that the CCT can be used as effective cognitive training program to improve cognitive function, depression, life satisfaction and activity of daily living in older adults with mild dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of horticultural activities with reminiscence materials and singing songs on the ability to recall words and depression in the elderly with mild dementia. A total of 20 sessions of a horticultural therapy program was held once or twice a week from July 14, 2015 to November 3, 2015 for the elderly with mind dementia at the social welfare center in D city. The subjects of this study were 13 women and the mean age was 81.2 years. The ability to recall words significantly improved from $8.6{\pm}1.8$ before the program to $9.4{\pm}0.6$ after the program (p=.012). However, there was no significant difference in the score of depression after the program. Synergistic effects were generated by applying horticultural activities, singing and reminiscence therapy activities simultaneously, and it was effective in recalling memories. As emotional functions were associated with hormones in vivo, there were emotional ups and downs at each session and short-term alternative therapies were not sufficient to completely eliminate neurotoxic substances caused by dementia.

  • One of the most negative social changes of the last decade is population aging which leads to 19 times more patients with Mild Cognitive Disorder(MCI). It is well established that MCI is the most important state that can prevent dementia with early diagnosis and intervention. However, the social security system for patients with dementia is not working properly due to the coronavirus pandemic and the limited human power. This article proposes design principles for dementia training programs of extended reality devices. and The findings in this study provide a guide for considering the cognitive and physical and social functions of patients.

  • As the aging society is accelerated, the population with dementia grows significantly faster. Because there is no complete cure of dementia, it is of great importance to detect the disease at a very early stage and prevent its fast aggravation through evaluation of MCI(Mild Cognitive Impairment) which happens before dementia. The current assessment of MCI conducts only in the form of hand-written data and by 1:1 face to face communication between the subjects and the examiners. Due to this, both examiners' fatigue rate and evaluation error rate increase. Further, there are some limitations in utilizing and analyzing data collected. Against the problems, therefore, there is a need to develop a computerized system by which MCI is assessed, and the results are saved and analyzed. This paper presents the development of such a system enabling MCI evaluation, its related data collection and analysis.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore influencing factors on care burden among family caregivers for elders with dementia living at home. Methods: Participants in this study were 211 family caregivers who were taking care of elders registered at a support center for dementia located in S-gu, Seoul. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression in SPSS WIN 23.0. Results: The care burden of family caregivers was mild to moderate ($40.31{\pm}21.50$) in this study. The factors influencing care burden among family caregivers for elders with dementia were the age, behavioral problems, and dependency in instrumental activities of daily living of demented elderly, in addition to the perceived health status and resting hours of family caregivers. Overall, these factors explained 46.5% of the total variability in care burden in this sample (F=13.01, p<.001). Conclusion: Findings from this study suggest that the characteristics of demented elderly and family caregivers can influence care burden differently. Individually tailored strategies based on the various caregiving contexts need to be developed to reduce the level of care burden among family caregivers for elders with dementia.
