The remote phosphor structure has been proven to bear greater luminous efficiency than both the conformal phosphor and in-cup phosphor structures; however, controlling its color quality is much more challenging. To solve this dilemma, various researchers have proposed dual-layer phosphor and triple-layer phosphor configuration as techniques to enhance the display brightness of white LEDs (WLEDs). Likewise, this study picked one of these configurations to utilize in multichip WLEDs with five distinct color temperatures in the range from 5600 to 8500 K, for the purpose of improving the optical properties of WLEDs, such as color rendering index (CRI), color quality scale (CQS), luminous efficacy (LE), and chromatic homogeneity. According to the results of this research, the triple-layer phosphor configuration has superior performance compared to other configurations in terms of CRI, CQS, and LE, and yields higher chromatic stability for WLEDs.

The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been studied experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. The measurements of scattering cross section from $90^{\circ}$ light scattering have been utilized to calculate the aggregate number density and volume fraction using with combination of measuring the particle size and morphology through the localized sampling and a TEM image analysis. Aggregate or particle number densities and volume fractions were calculated using Rayleigh-Debye-Gans and Mie theory for fractal aggregates and spherical particles, respectively. Of particular interests are the effects of flame temperature on the evolution of silica aggregate particles. As the flow rate of $H_2$ increases, the primary particle diameters of silica aggregates have been first decreased, but, further increase of $H_2$ flow rate causes the diameter of primary particles to increase and for sufficiently larger flow rates, the fractal aggregates finally become spherical particles. The variation of primary particle size along the upward jet centerline and the effect of burner configuration have also been studied.
The sensitivity of aerosol light extinction coefficient to the aerosol chemical composition change is estimated by (1) calculating the aerosol water content and chemical concentrations by a gas/particle equilibrium model and (2) calculating the aerosol light extinction coefficient by a Mie theory based optical model. The major chemical species are total (gas and particle phase) sulfuric acid, total nitric acid, and total ammonia which are based on the measurement data at Seoul and Gosan. At Seoul, since there were enough ammonia to neutralize both total sulfuric acid and total nitric acid, the dry ionic concentration is most sensitive to the variation of the total nitric acid level, while the total mass concentration (ionic concentration plus water content) and thus, the aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the total sulfuric acid. At Gosan, since the concentration of ambient sulfuric acid was the highest among the inorganic species, sulfate salts determined aerosol hygroscopicity. Thus, both ionic and total mass concentration, and resultant aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the sulfuric acid level.

The coupling effect of electric fields incident on the biological object is investigated in regards to dosimetry for a wireless power transfer(WPT) system using electromagnetic resonance phenomenon. The internal electric fields induced a biological sphere model exposed to a magnetic dipole are calculated with the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method considering both incident electric and magnetic fields, the impedance method considering only incident magnetic fields, and theoretical analysis. The results represent that the electric coupling effect on a biological object nearby the WPT system should be considered to conduct exact dosimetry.

The infrared reflection coatings with pigment can be used to protect the surfaces of combustible materials exposed to fire. To obtain high reflectivities in the infrared range (0.5-10.mu.m) important to fire, several dielectric pigments, such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and silicon, can be synthesized to polymer coatings. The theoretical analysis shows that the coating design with particles diameter in the 1.5 to 2.5.mu.m range and volume fraction in the 0.1 to 0.2 range is estimated to be optimal. In the analysis of the radiation, the dependent scattering, absorption by polymeric binder, and the internal interface reflection are considered. In addition, the temperature distribution in the semi-transparent coating layer and an opaque substrate (PMMA) is also presented.
Color rendering index (CRI) and luminous efficacy (LE) are two key performance factors of white LEDs (WLED). While most recent works in optics focus on methodology to improve these factors, little attention has been dedicated to chemical composition of materials. This paper studies the effect of $Sr_{2.4}1F_{2.59}B_{20.03}O_{74.8}:Eu_{0.12},Sm_{0.048}$ phosphor (SrSm), in terms of concentration and particle size on CRI and LE of 8500 K - WLEDs. Importantly, the molar mass of the componential ions in SrSm are calculated to shed light on the connection between the chemical composition of the material of interest and the performance of WLEDs. Results show that CRI can be improved to a value of around 86 by boosting red-light components in WLEDs, for all 3 major configurations: conformal, in-cup, and remote phosphor. CRI value tends to decrease with larger size of particles, while LE value goes in the reverse direction. On the other hand, both CRI and LE appear to be reduced at higher concentration of SrSm. This light attenuation is analyzed by using the Lambert-Beer law and Mie-scattering theory.

A visibility analysis model based on the Mie theory is applied to the measurements during the fall, 1993 in Seoul. Model estimations of the total extinction coefficient $b_{ext}$, and the particle scattering coefficient, $b_{sp}$ are in good agreement with the measured values by a transmissometer and a nephelometer, respectively. These values show strong dependency on the mass loading of fine particles( $D_{p}$ <3.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) but show no apparent relation with that of coarse particles(3.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$< $D^{p}$ <10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Relative humidity plays an important role in determining the size of particles which in turn, affects the optical efficiency of aerosol. Based on the composition analysis with cut size nitrate concentration is higher than the sulfate concentration in PM3-10 but they are comparable to each other in PM3. Considering in 1985, it demonstrates a drastic increase of nitrate concentration between 1985 and 1993. It is found that measured and estimated light extinction budget were in good agreement within 10% and that scattering by particles is responsible for about 50-55% and 70-80 % of total extinction during clear and smoggy periods respectively.y.

The effects of radial heat and $H_2O$ diffusion on the evolution of silica particles in coflow diffusion flames have been studied experimentally. The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been measured experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. Flame temperatures and volumetric differential scattering cross sections have been measured for different flame conditions such as inert gas species, $H_2$ flow rates, and burner injection configurations to examine the relation between the formation of particles and radial $H_2O$ diffusion. The comparisons of oxidation and flame hydrolysis have also been made for various $H_2$ flow rates using $N_2$ or $O_2$ as a carrier gas. Results indicate that the role of oxidation becomes dominant as both carrier gas($O_2$) and $H_2$ flow rates increases since the radial heat diffusion precedes $H_2O$ diffusion in coflow flames used in this study. The effect of carrier gas flow rates on the evolution of silica particles have also been studied. When using $N_2$ as a carrier gas, the particle volume fraction has a maximum at a certain carrier gas flow rate and as the flow rate is further increased, the hydrolysis reaction Is delayed and the spherical particles finally evolves into fractal aggregates due to decreased flame temperature and residence time.

Obtaining accurate visibility measurements is a common atmospheric optical problem, and of vital significance to civil aviation. To effectively evaluate and improve the accuracy of visibility measurements, an outdoor atmospheric simulation chamber with dimensions of $1.8{\times}1.6{\times}55.7m^3$ was constructed. The simulation chamber could provide a relatively homogeneous haze environment, in which the visibility varied from 10 km to 0.2 km over 5 hours. A baseline-changing visibility measurement system was constructed in the chamber. A mobile platform (receiver) was moved from 5 m to 45 m, stopping every 5 m, to measure and record the transmittance. The total least-squares method was used to fit the extinction coefficient. During the experiment conducted in the chamber, the unit weight variance was as low as $1.33{\times}10^{-4}$ under high-visibility conditions, and the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was as high as 0.99 under low-visibility conditions, indicating high stability and accuracy of the system used to measure the extinction coefficients and strong consistency between repeated measurements. A Grimm portable aerosol spectrometer (PAS) was used to record the aerosol distribution, and then Mie theory was used to calculate the extinction coefficients. The theoretical results were found to be consistent with the measurements and exhibited a positive correlation, although they were higher than the measured values.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been explored recently as a promising approach to increase energy conversion efficiency in photovoltaic devices, particularly for thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells. The LSPR is frequently excited via an electromagnetic (EM) radiation in proximate metallic nanostructures and its primary con sequences are selective photon extinction and local EM enhancement which gives rise to improved photogeneration of electron-hole (e-h) pairs, and consequently increases photocurrent. In this work, high-dielectric-constant (k) $ZrO_2$ (refractive index n=2.22, dielectric constant $\varepsilon=4.93$ at the wavelength of 550 nm) is proposed as spacing layer to enhance the LSPR for application to the thin film silicon solar cells. Compared to excitation of the LSPR using $SiO_2$ (n=1.46, $\varepsilon=2.13$ at the wavelength of 546.1 nm) spacing layer with Au nanoparticles of the radius of 45nm, that using $ZrO_2$ dielectric shows the advantages of(i) ~2.5 times greater polarizability, (ii) ~3.5 times larger scattering cross-section and ~1.5 times larger absorption cross-section, (iii) 4.5% higher transmission coefficient of the same thickness and (iv) 7.8% greater transmitted electric filed intensity at the same depth. All those results are calculated by Mie theory and Fresnel equations, and simulated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations with proper boundary conditions. Red-shifting of the LSPR wavelength using high-k $ZrO_2$ dielectric is also observed according to location of the peak and this is consistent with the other's report. Finally, our experimental results show that variation of short-circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of the LSPR enhanced a-Si:H solar cell by using the $ZrO_2$ spacing layer is 45.4% higher than that using the $SiO_2$ spacing layer, supporting our calculation and theory.
